Mike Vrabel’s success in his first year as Patriots coach earned him some high recognition from the Pro Football Writers Association when he was named the PFWA’s Coach of the Year.
The 50-year-old is also a finalist for AP Coach of the Year .
Vrabel was hired by the Patriots in January after a disastrous 2024 season under Jerod Mayo . New England finished 4-13 for a second straight year, and Robert Kraft promptly fired Mayo after the Patriots’ Week 18 after just oneseason.
Now with Vrabel at the helm, the Patriots have found an identity.
The Patriots went 14-3 in 2025 en route to their first AFC East title since 2019. Vrabel has been able to get the most out of his players including Stefon Diggs , TreVeyon Henderson and MVP finalist Drake Maye .
Vrabel immediately shifted the culture upon his arrival and the players bought in.
“I definitely noticed the identity shift and the culture change, the moment Vrabes stepped in,” Vederian Lowe said . “He came in and immediately demanded that we follow the team identity, and he promised that would give us a chance. We all bought it, and here we are.”
After struggling in the post- Tom Brady era between Cam Newton , Mac Jones and Jacoby Brissett , the Patriots appear to have the quarterback of the future in Maye, and a coach who understands how to win and what it takes to be successful in Vrabel.
Vrabel’s next test comes Sunday on the road when the Patriots take on the Denver Broncos in the AFC Championship Game.
