A near-brawl that resulted from an inflammatory remark by Washington Nationals pitcher Cade Cavalli directed at Boston Red Sox slugger Willson Contreras has resulted in four players associated with the two teams getting multiple-game suspensions from Major League Baseball.
Cavalli and Contreras were both suspended for seven games , while Miles Mikolas of the Cardinals was handed a five-game suspension and Nate Eaton of the Red Sox must sit for three games.
Cavalli, the Nationals starting pitcher in Tuesday's game at Fenway Park, shouted derisively at the fiery Contreras after he struck him out in the fourth inning. The Nationals pitcher shouted "sit down boy" in a loud voice following a called third strike. The incredulous Contreras looked up as if to see who Cavalli directed the insult at and when he realized he was the object of the remark, he charged the pitcher.
He attempted to get at him and at one point threw his helmet in Cavalli's direction. Both benches and bullpens emptied, and Mikolas and Eaton also appeared to engage each other before the incident dissipated.
Contreras, Mikolas, Eaton and Red Sox manager Chad Tracy were ejected from the game. Cavalli was allowed to continue pitching and he stayed in the game through 7 innings in Washington's 8-1 triumph
The suspensions for all four players are scheduled to begin Friday. The Red Sox open a three-game series with the Los Angeles Angels , while the Nationals host the Pirates in a three-game set.
The players have the right to appeal their suspensions with the hope of getting the number of games reduced.
