JT Realmuto did not play in the Philadelphia Phillies ' 5-0 loss to the San Francisco Giants on Wednesday after suffering a foot injury on the previous day . The 13-year veteran catcher expressed how he was concerned he may have broken his foot when the injury initially occurred.
Realmuto, who turned 35 in March, admitted as such while talking with media members on Wednesday, according to Todd Zolecki of MLB.com. It doesn't appear to be as serious an injury as Realmuto originally believed, as he reportedly hopes to return to action for Friday's contest against the Arizona Diamondbacks .
"JT Realmuto said he hopes to play Friday, but he will get more treatment on Thursday in Philadelphia," reported Zolecki. "He said when he got hit by a foul ball on Tuesday, he thought he might have broken his foot. Told Rafael Marchan to get ready, but Realmuto finished the inning."
Marchan filled in as the starter on Wednesday, giving Realmuto a much-needed break. The Phillies will likely evaluate the foot injury before manager Rob Thomson determines the three-time All-Star's status. If he is unable to play on Friday, then Marchan is likely to fill in as catcher once again.
JT Realmuto has played in nine games so far this season. He is about on par with his career averages early in the campaign. Through 25 at-bats, Realmuto owns a .240 batting average and .406 OBP while recording six hits, one home run, and one RBI. He has also drawn five walks, along with scoring four runs for the Phillies.
