The Chicago White Sox (16-18) are hovering around .500 and sit only one and a half games out of first place in the suspect American League Central Division. They are trusting their long-term plans, but amid a recent string of injuries, the organization is choosing to add a veteran presence to its outfield. Enter Randal Grichuk .
Chicago has agreed to a major-league contract with the 34-year-old right-handed hitter, according to FanSided's Robert Murray. Grichuk was recently designated for assignment by the New York Yankees and is batting only .194 with a .535 OPS through 31 at-bats this season. The surging White Sox hope he can perform closer to his career numbers.
Grichuk will now play for his eighth MLB franchise. He has a .250/.297/.464/.761 slash line in 4,866 plate appearances and has made a noticeable impact at various points over the last 13 years.
The 2009 first-round draft pick recorded seven triples in his first full season with the St. Louis Cardinals back in 2014, belted 102 home runs in a four-year span (2016-19) and posted a 291 batting average, .528 slugging percentage and .875 OPS in 106 games for the Diamondbacks in 2024. Although he is seemingly on the decline, Grichuk has proven he could swing a competent bat time and again.
Chicago is counting on him to provide sufficient production for the time being. Both Everson Pereira and Tanner Murray just landed on the injured list with a pectoral strain and shoulder dislocation, respectively, creating an opportunity for the Rosenberg, Texas native.
Randal Grichuk will try to expand on a positive road trip with the Yankees — 4-for-11 with two doubles and two runs scored — and do his best to help the White Sox through their rebuild. This talented and feisty squad faces the Los Angeles Angels (13-22) in Anaheim on Monday night.
