49ers Stars Take Charge as Shanahan Recovers
Following a harrowing car accident, veteran leaders unite to steer training camp while their head coach recovers, proving the Super Bowl contenders remain focused on their mission.

When news got out that head coach Kyle Shanahan had been involved in a serious car a- crash on July 14th, the initial shockwave hit the locker room of the San Francisco 49ers hard.
While the general public learned of the accident on Saturday, several key veterans were informed well before report day.
Now, as 2026 training camp gets underway, the 49ers' core leaders are stepping forward with a unified message.
Here's what they had to say.
Linebacker Fred Warner was among the first players to find out, receiving a direct message shortly after the inci- incident from Shanahan's wife, Mandy, saying, "Mandy, Kyle's wife, let me and my wife know about the incident," Warner shared during his press conference.
"And of course, my first reaction was just to try to make sure everybody was good, everyone was okay.
I mean, it's scary.
Any type of car accident, you just never know what the severity of it's gonna be.
But luckily, everybody seems to be on the up and up and doing well, so just super blessed in that way."
Warner didn't hesitate to reassure his head coach, saying, "We got this, Coach.
We got this.
Trust us."
Quarterback Brock Purdy also revealed that Shanahan had personally texted him to explain what happened.
He said, "He had shot me a text and told me what happened, so obviously he and I are texting back and forth," Purdy said during an appearance on KMBR, "And praying for him and everything for his healing.
Know that he's alive, he's good, and we're all here for him.
We love Coach and know he's going to be just fine."
While Shanahan works through the league concussion protocol and recovers from his physical injuries, the players are treating his temporary absence not as a hurdle, but as a test of their maturity.
As Williams put it when asked the team if they felt any pressure from the head coach being sidelined, said, "We got a lot of vets.
He can really be on autopilot.
We got the locker room."
Shanahan built this roster on resilient high q- IQ and self-policing players.
If the early days of camp are any indication, the 49ers locker room is eager to prove that their head coach can focus entirely on getting healthy because the players on the field have everything else completely under control
