Nicholas Morano here from Bears Roundtable Sports.
With OTAs underway at Halas Hall, Ben Johnson has looked this offense and has emphasized some important details that the unit must look at for this upcoming season.
So some areas of focus that Johnson highlighted to the media at Halas Hall on Thursday, ball security, takeaways, and actually those were points in the Bears offense that worked really well for Caleb Williams and the entire unit.
The Bears only gave the ball away 11 total times.
That was the least amount in the NFL.
But at the top, something that was emphasized before last season, the Bears didn't quite meet that goal, and is still being emphasized is, if you guessed it, completion percentage.
That is something that Ben Johnson talked about in today's media availability, and here's what he had to say about completion percentage.
"Completion percentage is something that we're going to emphasize.
What did they get when they came into the offensive meeting today?
They got the chart of what was our completion percentage yesterday.
Who had drops?
What did our scramble drill look like when those naturally occurred?
That's really our first objective is just drawing more attention to it.
Those guys are really critical of themselves in drill settings, routes on air, where the ball placement is.
We wanna give these pass catchers, we have so many talented ones, opportunities to run after the catch, so we're being very critical of where we're putting the football with them.
That's something that we grade every day."
Now, Caleb Williams finished with a 58.1 completion percentage in 2025, ranked one of the lowest in the league.
It was actually even lower than his rookie season.
So what we've heard from Ben Johnson, and really since he became Bears head coach, is that this team is not going to overlook details like that.
The Bears are emphasizing completion percentage to the point where they're getting graded on it every single day.
They put that high mark out there, that goal of 70%.
Johnson knows it, so does William.
And JT Barrett, the quarterbacks coach, spoke to reporters last Thursday and said he has no doubt that this will be better in year two of Johnson's offense because he's more familiar with the scheme.
We'll see if that plays out in Caleb Williams's third year in the NFL, but second year in Ben Johnson's system.
