The White Sox are nearing a remarkable comeback, targeting the postseason following a brutal three-year stretch of rebuilding. Can they avoid regression?

Video Transcript

The White Sox very much alive.

Yeah.

Very much, you know, in the Central, fighting.

What a turnaround.

I mean, all things being equal, the White Sox end up making the postseason this year, might be one of the most unbelievable turnarounds that we have seen in a very, very long time here.

I, I would put it on par with That's like waking up and being like, "Hey, the Rockies are in playoff," like, wait a minute.

It's true.

Yeah.

What?

It, it's kind of- It's true amazing what they've done here in, in just, you know, 12 to f- 12 to 16 months.

Yeah, if you think about it, Joe, the last time that we thought the White Sox were gonna be like this was, I'm gonna go back probably four or five years ago, when, if you remember Tony La Russa was the manager for a year for the White Sox.

Yes.

Joe, you remember that?

Eloy Jimnez and Yoan Moncada, uh- Yeah and Luis Robert, right?

Like, those were the guys that were gonna take the White Sox into the, the next period of greatness.

That never happened.

They got rid of all of them.

And the, the way that I would summarize the White Sox a little bit amongst Major League Baseball fans, is pretty anonymous.

They don't have a lot of players that the average fan can name, and their pitching staff, Joe, which has been very good, and I know Burke pitched very well today, a lot of people don't know who these guys are.

Like, Davis Martin.

Yeah.

It's like, like, where did they even find a lot of these guys?

So it leads me to believe that, there's some regression maybe coming for them.

I, I, I, I do think Cleveland is better than them, and I do think Cleveland's gonna win the division.

But to your point, Will Venable, may win Manager of the Year in the American League.

I think if, if they make the playoffs, he will.

But I, I don't see them as a major threat.

What's really impressive also for them is that the offense, which was so good April and May, they lost Murakami and, and hung around- Yeah for a while.

Like, Murakami may have been the best signing of anybody this off season, but when he was out, they hung around because this kid Colson Montgomery was so good, too.

So, m- maybe, Joe.

I, I just don't think Well, and I'm not asking the White Sox to make crazy moves here in the next couple days, but without that, Joe, do, do you really think they're as good as Cleveland?

I don't.

I, I think the Guardians are better, and so But I, I, I could see it battling to the end, but you're right.

Credit to them.

I mean, even if they only win 83, 84 games, still a surprise season.

And they're in the thick of it, and nobody gave them a sho- I, it's just, it's a very good story, and it's what baseball is all about, is giving teams an opportunity to turn around in a year.

And yeah, nobody's saying you're not gonna win 100 games, but you know what?

You're in the postseason.

You're playing extra baseball, which, can't be said for a lot of other teams, uh- True that have been absolutely horrific.

So, I was gonna say, I thought you were gonna say, like, "I have to go back to the last time the White Sox were good," I thought you were gonna say, like Greg Luzinski.

I thought you were really gonna go back there.

Frank Thomas.

So, Thomas.

Like, I, I was like, how far back is he gonna go, here with this one?

No.

But no.

Joe, don't you You remem- You remember when they had Eloy Jimnez and Moncada.

Like, that wasn't that long ago, 2020, 2021.

I remember when they had Chris Sale.

They had Chris Sale, too.

So let's, you know.

Right, but that's how they go- Well- But that's how they got Moncada, and, I don't- That's right I don't remember all the guys in that deal.

But, but I know that they got a bunch of guys in that deal, too.

But since then, remember also two years ago they fired, Kenny Williams, who was their GM for like- Mm-hmm 20 years, and they brought in Chris Getz.

He was getting ripped apart in the media.

"Oh, he doesn't know what he's doing."

I mean, Getz- Yep Getz is in line to be Executive of the Year, too.

That Murakami signing, Joe- Huge is one that, like, like the Yankees f- in particular, you know I hate talking about the Yankees all the time, but the Yankees in particular gotta be kicking themselves, man.

Like, that, that was a perfect guy for that park, and he didn't even- Yeah get a lot of money to play with them, you know?

Like, I What did he get for the White Sox?

Two years, 20 million or something like that?

Like, this guy's a $100 million player- Yeah.

Yeah it looks like.

Yeah.

Yeah, so.

Exactly.

So, so, any- anybody could've signed him- Would've been really good White Sox did.

Yep.

Yeah.
