Jahmyr Gibbs Sets New Record for NFL Running Back Pay
Detroit recently made Jahmyr Gibbs the NFL's highest-paid running back, overtaking Bijan Robinson and Jonathan Taylor with a record-breaking contract.

Running backs have got money on their mind now, and, if you missed it, Jahmyr Gibbs now the highest paid, most guaranteed money for a running back that we have seen in NFL history.
And now that's within 72 hours, and it started with Bijan Robinson, who agreed to a three year, 66.75 million extension.
Could be up to 75 million with incentives.
$22.5 million a year, 51.1 guaranteed money, and that was good for number one until, of course, yeah, Jahmyr Gibbs decided to get a new contract.
And he is getting even more money than that.
24 years old, not gonna have Montgomery in the backfield here.
You like investing this kind of money, Craig, in a running back in this NFL?
He seems to be as close to, like, a LaDainian Tomlinson as I've seen.
So yeah, I think this is that kind of guy.
I do.
He's not as big as Bijan Robinson, obviously, and, and Robinson could probably take some more hits.
But Gibbs to me, from what I, I have experienced watching him, he's been relatively healthy regardless of his size the last couple of years.
And look, say what you want about Dan Campbell, he seems to have a pretty, good, bead on the pulse of the team.
And for him to just let Montgomery go like that tells me that they have a lot of faith in, in Jahmyr Gibbs.
So I think you were telling me, or the guys were telling me that Isaiah Pacheco was the backup.
That's not really a backup.
So, uh- No, he's not I, I would assume that Gibbs is gonna get a lot of touches and a lot of time.
And the other thing too is, is, Joe, when you give this kind of money to a running back, doesn't, isn't that the point?
Like, you're, you're gonna play- Yeah this guy a lot.
Detroit was a perplexing team in the NFL last year, by the way.
Like, that was Was that the biggest underperforming team last year in the NFL?
Like, what, what, how, what Did the Lions even make the playoffs?
They didn't make it, right?
Well, it, defensively they were no good.
Yeah.
I mean, that, th- th- that defense fell apart, all the injuries.
That it wasn't good.
They had no secondary there.
Nobody was happy with the offensive coordinator.
But they do have a new offensive coordinator this year and, you know, that comes changes, right?
I mean, say what you want about Dan Campbell though, but it, these coordinators get stepping stones to other jobs, or they flunk out rather quickly, which is kind of what happened there.
I, I think it's gonna be fascinating.
It's n- are you gonna become too one-dimensional is my question.
Because you know what's gonna happen with defenses.
Oh, you want Jahmyr Gibbs to have the ball.
Yeah, no, somebody else has got to, so It's what made Montgomery- True so interesting, that combination, because it was a great change of pa- you know, change of pace back there.
You know, Gibbs could take it to the house in one touch, but if you wanted the grind, you know, you wanted the grind out and take some time off the clock, that was Montgomery, who now will do it- In Houston for Houston, which they'll need.
I mean, how many one, you know, 85 yard touchdown runs are you gonna get in the NFL if you're Jahmyr Gibbs?
At some point defenses are gonna be like, "Yeah, I don't think so."
And at 24 years old, he's heading into his prime.
27 years old is what Jonathan Taylor is.
I believe this is now his second contract- Mm-hmm go around, for a contract there.
He did get a three-year deal that, that he was finishing up before signing this new one.
And listen, that offense is all about him.
It ain't about Danny Dimes, right?
So I, I kind of love locking him up there because your entire offensive philosophy for Shane Steichen centers around Jonathan Taylor being able to get the ball either running or out of the backfield.
And maybe there's something to this now in the NFL, going back to trusting running backs to be the focal point of the offense- Maybe so instead of crazy I mean, the, what?
Would you rather have A.J.
Brown or would you rather have Bijan Robinson?
I'd rather have Amon-Ra Saint Brown than have him too.
