McVay addresses reaction to Rams drafting Simpson

Here's Sean McVay from Friday when he had an opportunity to come back and talk to reporters and implement the strategy- Yeah that they borrowed from me without compensation.
Put it on your tab.
But every decision that we make is collective and collaborative.
And so, for any of the questions or misunderstandings just based on my demeanor or disposition last night, I did wanna get that out of the way.
This is my buddy right here.

So, I did That was brought to my attention because I got so many texts and, that was never my intended, way to be able to come off, but sometimes I can be a little grumpy, you know?
Couldn't be more excited about being able to add him, but also understanding of how much I love Matthew Stafford, how respectful you wanna always be to just the way things can be interpreted.
And so, the demeanor would've been, you know, stoic by nature because you are excited, but by no means You know, it is Matthew's football team.
Excited to be able to add Ty.
What a blessing it is for him to be able to learn from Matthew, to be able to come into this atmosphere and environment, but whenever that time comes for him to get an opportunity to be Matthew's successor will be on Matthew's terms.
Yeah, that's the way we're used to hearing and seeing Sean McVay.
Yeah.
By the way, when did he get so damn swole, man?
He's, he- He's jacked.
He is jacked, right?
Like, good lord.
Looks like the Hulk who- Yeah hasn't turned back to Bruce Banner.
He is.
He's definitely jacked right there.
That was a, yeah, a tight hoodie, but nonetheless, yeah, the guns were poppin', the, the- Maybe he spent all day in the gym- Yeah, because he was pissed off maybe because he was, yeah, he's been pumping iron all day.
He, exactly.
He had to get that rage out.
He was like, "I'm going to the gym."
"I gotta pump this out."
But yeah, I mean, first off, he's self-aware.
I'm sure he got a lot of texts, yeah, because it, it was crazy.
Nobody sees him act like that on a regular basis.
And, you know, he handled that situation just right with patting Les on the back and, you know, even that, you could just tell, yeah, there was tension the other night.
And, you know, he's laughing now and blah, blah, blah, but there was tension there, and they're not gonna tell me otherwise.
I don't care how they change their story or what other story you give them here going forward.
but, but we're gonna see how this works out, and we've seen, yeah, we've seen this story work where guy's gotta sit behind player for a long time, and then it does work, but there's other times where it doesn't, and there's times where you go, "Wait," you know, "Did you waste a big asset here for a team, a course that is in the Super Bowl window?"
And not just, like, the Super Bowl window, like, you look at it and you go, "No, the Rams could They're, like, set up here for the next few years to where they're, they're not going anywhere."
And so that's where I guess it's, it's still shocking too in, as far as the quarterback being drafted at 13.
And I think the deeper issue here, I really do believe this.
Yeah.
I'm gonna try to articulate it accurately.
It's not gonna p- probably come out the way I want it to, but think about Sean McVay's journey in the 10 years that he's been the head coach of the team.
They win the Super Bowl in 2021.
The next year is a major step back to the point where he was thinking about calling it quits.
He's spoken about being burned out.
I think he may have mentioned it when we interviewed him four weeks ago- Yeah, he did today in Arizona.
Right.
And he has since found a new appreciation for the game.
He loves the process.
He doesn't get focused on the outcome.
He doesn't let the outcome drag him down.
He finds his joy in the process.
So you've got a guy who's been through this journey.
He took you to the top of the mountain.
The aftermath of it almost caused him to make a Dick Vermeil-type move and say, "I can't do this to myself."
Yeah, yeah.
So he's recalibrated.
He's, he, he's gone through the fires, and he's found himself in a spot where you combine one of the best football minds out there with a guy who is happy and motivated and driven, and you're not gonna listen to him when the time comes to use this 13th pick, and you're gonna jam a quarterback?
You know, this is a guy who has found a love of process, and you're gonna jam a quarterback he doesn't want onto his process?
What are you doing- Yeah Los Angeles Rams?
You're playing with fire here.
And that Now, now I'm, now, and I'm not trying to get him pissed off again.
But that is what would piss me off.
I have worked and worked and worked for this organization, and I have worked on myself to get to the point where I am happy every day, so I can be as productive as I possibly can for the Los Angeles Rams, and you're gonna mess with me like this?
Are you kidding me?
Are you kidding me?
Yeah.
So I think that may be part of it.
I, I th- I hear you, Mike.
I, I, I don't dou- I doubt that at all.
I, I've thought about that a little bit.
You know, the, what I did think about along the lines of what you're saying right there is that h- this is a guy, think about this, quarterback whisper amazing, right?
But he's never really gotten the chance to draft his guy.
Now, i- if you think about that, you go, "No, no, he got the Rams'.
Jared Goff was there.
He had to save it.
He had to He was like, "Hey," they were like, "Please save us.
He's our number one pick, and it doesn't look like he's gonna be worth that.
Save us."
And, and back into Washington, I mean, Kirk Cousins and Robert Griffin III, they, I mean, they were drafted by the Shanahans.
So he's never gotten that opportunity.
I could see him a little bit like, "Wait, wait, you're gonna stick me with a guy that, that, like, really I didn't, this is not my guy?
Like, I didn't buy into this?
I, th- this wasn't my project?"
I mean, we showed the clip on Friday.
I mean, he was with Kay Adams five weeks before the draft.
He hadn't really watched Ty Simpson yet.
That does not tell me and scream, "Oh, we have quarterback on our radar for the first pick of the draft."
That, that, that, I mean, he gave You could tell it there.
Well, you've se- he said, I'm paraphrasing with Kay Adams, but basically, like, "I, you know, I, I respect what he's done, but y- I think you've seen more of him than I have," or something along that, those lines there.
So I can see from everything there and just how it lines up and, like, what you're saying there, that yes, I, I would s- think he is a little annoyed, like, "Wait, I'm the guy, and I, I This is not really the guy I'm, like, trying to, you know, pound the table for" and go, "Yeah, this is who I want to replace Matthew Stafford and take us into the future."
It was kind of forced on him, and of course, he's the expert, so I can understand him, you know, being angry about that, to your point there.
