It's February, time for San Francisco Giants to report to Arizona for Cactus League action.

Video Transcript

Hey, I'm Joe Rutland with Giants Roundtable for Roundtable Sports.

Well, Giants fans, it's February 1st, and finally, you get a chance to have a look at the calendar and take a look and see that February 21st is just around the corner.

Why is that date important?

Well, that's the first date the Giants play their first spring training game, and they're gonna be taking the field with Tony Pistillo as their manager.

Finally, after all the talk about Pistillo coming over from the University of Tennessee, after being the head coach of that program and coming to his first Major League Baseball managerial position, and how is he gonna look, and what's he gonna look like, and on and on it goes.

Well, it'll soon be time to see what happens on the field.

Now, remember, this is spring training.

Players are gonna come in, and some of them may be in better shape than others, but the Giants players, like Julio Uras and Rafael Devers, Logan Webb, and others, wanna come in and get their work in.

They're gonna come in and get themselves limbered up and ready for the upcoming 2026 Major League Baseball season.

The Giants really wanna finish with a winning record this season.

They don't wanna get another five hundred or below, record, look to stare them in the face again.

The Giants chose to let Bob Melvin go after two seasons.

He wasn't getting the job done.

That's why they brought Pistillo in.

Now, Giants President of Baseball Operations, Buster Posey, has done some work in getting this roster in better shape.

But do the Giants have enough to really challenge the Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League West Division?

That remains a big question.

If the Giants can put things together and really challenge the Dodgers, then it might be a really exciting baseball season.

But if the Giants can't get things together and they start seeing themselves in June, July, or even August, down by ten, twelve, fifteen games, that's not a good sign.

And it may be time to readjust as far as the Giants go, as far as their players are concerned, their lineup is concerned, et cetera, if they get into that position.

But it's not there yet.

We're not near that.

Spring training hits in just a few days for pitchers and catchers to report.

Then February 21st, the official first spring training game for the Giants.

So let's see what they can do, and let's see what Pistillo can put together going into spring training.
