準備して家を出るとJamesが玄関口の椅子で座っていた。...

「出発は今日？」と聞かれたので「明日の1：30pmの飛行機だから、
9pmには家を出るよ」とか少し予定を話した。
Jamesはいつも忙しそうであまり家にいなかったが、イベントの情報を教えてくれたり
Aaronを紹介してもらったり、いろいろとよくしてもらったな。彼の家に泊まれてよかった。
などと感謝の気持ちでいっぱいになりながら Capitol に向かう。
週末のMemorial Dayということで道路は結構な渋滞だ。
バスが進まなくなってしまったのでCapitolより少し遠くで降り歩いて向かう。
Capitol前は警官が整備していて特設入場口に長蛇の列ができている。
早めに行ったので会場の目の前、一般観客エリア最前列に座ることになった。
その一般観客エリアの前に軍人さんの席があり、
軍人さん一団が会場に入場するたびに拍手が起こる。
アフガニスタンから帰国した人たちなのかな。胸には多くの勲章が付いている。
2時間ほど待っているとスピーチのリハーサルで Colin Luther Powell が来た。
子ブッシュ政権時には国務長官だったが、今は普通の政治家なのだろうか。
イラク戦争ではよくニュースで見たパウエル元国務長官だ。
このConcertはアメリカ全土、全世界で放映される番組らしく、野外セットも出演者もとても豪華だ。
それを無料で国籍関係なく観覧できるのだからなんともすばらしい。
8pmになりConcertが始まる。
俺は知らなかったのだが、アメリカで有名なロックバンドやカントリー歌手が演奏をする。
そして帰還兵の紹介、夫を戦争で亡くした奥さんからの手紙の朗読など、粛々と番組は進行した。
