Rooted in Resilience, Echoes of Excellence: FCPS’ Second Annual Black History Month Celebration

The spirit of heritage and the promise of the future filled the air at Carter G. Woodson High School as Fairfax County Public Schools held its second annual Black History Month Celebration with the theme "Rooted in Resilience: Echoes of Excellence." This year’s event was especially significant as it coincided with the 100th anniversary of the movement that became Black History Month.

Students from across the division took center stage as the true "echoes" of this excellence. The program featured student-led "Moments of Pride" that connected local and national history to contemporary achievements. A spirited keynote speech was delivered by Vernon Walton, senior pastor at the First Baptist Church of Vienna. Another highlight of the night was the FCPS Black Excellence video tribute .

Health Reminder: Measles Vaccination Awareness

This is an important health reminder following recent notifications from the Virginia Department of Health regarding confirmed cases of measles in communities across Northern Virginia.

At this time, the Fairfax County Health Department has confirmed that there is no indication of increased risk within FCPS schools or facilities. However, measles is a highly contagious virus. This situation underscores the critical role vaccination plays in protecting individual health and preventing the spread of illness.

FCPS strongly encourages all staff to ensure they are up to date on the Measles, Mumps, and Rubella (MMR) vaccine, which is the most effective protection against measles. Public health guidance recommends two doses of the MMR vaccinefor full protection.

Staff who are unsure of their vaccination status or who have questions about the MMR vaccine are encouraged to contact their health care provider. Additional information is also available through the Fairfax County Health Department website .

Maintaining high vaccination coverage helps protect our students, colleagues, and community — particularly those who may be medically unable to receive vaccines.

Thank you for your continued commitment to maintaining a safe and healthy learning environment.

Volunteer FCPS: Find Opportunities and Register as a Volunteer

Through Volunteer FCPS, individuals can register and search for volunteer opportunities in the school division.

All volunteers need to register within Volunteer FCPS. This includes FCPS staff who work as student mentors, volunteer at their child’s school, or help in any unpaid capacity in the school system.

Once they have registered and their employment is verified, staff are cleared for opportunities at all levels due to their background check being on file.

Register and complete a short volunteer orientation. Learn more about Volunteer FCPS .

How to Add a Volunteer Opportunity to Volunteer FCPS

Schools and departments are asked to centralize the volunteer management process by posting all opportunities through Volunteer FCPS. This helps ensure that all volunteers are undergoing background checks and understand expectations.

To simplify this process, a Request a Volunteer Opportunity Form is now available in Atlas for FCPS staff to request a post on Volunteer FCPS. Schools and central office staff may use this form to submit details about volunteer needs.

Once the form is submitted, the volunteer point-of-contact for that location will review the request and seek administrator approval before posting on Volunteer FCPS.

Enhancing Safety and Security for Staff and Students

On Tuesday, January 20, impacted staff will be assigned a mandatory training in MyPDE to learn more about the wearable Emergency Response Buttons (ERBs) for staff working in schools. The 15-minute training is due no later than Wednesday, February 4

ERBs allow staff to discreetly request help and provide location information within the school once activated. The ERB will only work on school grounds and does not rely on cellular service. All FCPS staff will be notified the day before the system goes live and becomes fully operational.

Reid Reflects: Safeguarding Students and AI Learning

Last week, Superintendent Dr. Michelle Reid kicked off a half-day training on ChatGPT for Teachers for technology support specialists (TSSpecs) and school-based technology specialists (SBTS). OpenAI’s education lead, Sam Kanning-Caplan, led an in-depth training on platform capabilities and instructional applications. The training also featured a leadership panel to answer questions including FCPS’ chief information and technology officer, chief academic officer, chief equity officer, and the assistant superintendent of Instructional Services.

Academic Matters: Update on AI in FCPS

In the Academic Matters portion of last Thursday’s School Board meeting, Dr. Reid provided an update on Artificial Intelligence (AI) @ FCPS

In her remarks, Dr. Reid noted that studies show students are already using AI , so it is essential that we begin by training adults who can guide this work responsibly. FCPS’ guiding principles for implementing AI include:

  • Humans in Control: Teachers are the experts responsible for learning and decision-making. AI supports teachers. It does not replace them.
  • Ethical and Responsible: We must uphold academic integrity and protect student privacy and security.
  • Intentional Adoption: Continuously monitoring AI's impacts, maximizing its benefits, and implementing safeguards to avoid harm.
