Reid Recognizes Reading Specialist
Fairfax Villa Elementary School Reading Specialist Lisa Choi was celebrated last week as the FCPS CARES of the Quarter award recipient.
Known as a “master of her craft,” Lisa blends strong instruction with deep care. She creates engaging literacy experiences and has received Educate Fairfax grants for two consecutive years to support this work.

Today is School Bus Driver Appreciation Day! Thank you to all our transportation workers, including Ahmed Hillman, pictured above, for all the early mornings and long days getting our kids to and from school.
The annual Impact Awards celebrate both individuals and teams exceeding expectations in supporting FCPS strategic initiatives. Nominations are due this Thursday, April 30. Visit the Impact Awards Atlas page for submission instructions.
Nominations are only accepted from current FCPS employees. Multiple recipients are chosen from each category to receive an Impact Award, and they are recognized at a celebratory event in the fall, in addition to receiving a cash award. Nominees must be current employees who expect to remain FCPS employees through the end of 2026.

Help New Teachers and Support Principals by Becoming a Lead MentorThe lead mentor selection form for the 2026-27 school year is available to school-based administrators. Principals will be providing the names of their lead mentor(s) to the Great Beginnings team by Wednesday, May 13.
Lead mentors are instrumental in building capacity in new educators. Mentors at the school level are essential members of school leadership teams. Learn more about the role of lead mentor on Atlas . Help us show the community all the fantastic things that make FCPS a premier school division! The Summer Extravaganza will take place on Saturday, June 6, from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., at Woodson High School

This dynamic, family-friendly event highlights engaging and innovative learning opportunities. It is designed to support student well-being, academic growth, and community connections. FCPS offices, departments, schools, and teacher-led groups are encouraged to share:
- Summer programs or enrichment opportunities.
- Creative learning games and hands-on learning experiences.
- Health, wellness, or family engagement strategies.

Connecting Families and Schools: First Class Awards and the Special Education Family Conference
Attendance at this year’s Special Education Family Conference more than doubled! The free, in-person event is held in collaboration with a wide range of internal and external community partners to support families and educators. Read about the conference

Among the members of Team FCPS on hand to help families at the conference was Family Resource Center Liaison Amal Elsayed. Amal works with families to help them feel seen, heard, and valued as a partner in their child’s education.

Empowering Students and Building Connections
Paul Arena, an intellectual disabilities teacher at Robinson, is also a proud alumnus, a dedicated coach, and an active member of the school’s community. As a strong advocate for fostering meaningful connections, Paul plays a vital role in the partnership class and the Partner’s Club, helping build connections between students with special needs and their peers in general education.

A Legacy of Love: Navy Students Learn That Every Child Is Supposed to Feel Safe
Chrissy McLaughlin, Navy Elementary School’s school-based technology specialist, has turned unimaginable loss into profound action. The color blue and the month of April carry special meaning for her.
April is Child Abuse Awareness Month, and the cause is represented by the color blue. Over the last 20 years, Chrissy has worked to embrace both as she remembers her son, Zach, who died as a result of child abuse. Chrissy works to educate others and share her story so that other children might be protected. Read about Zach, his story, and his mother’s advocacy .
Early Math Skills Prepare FCPS Students for Algebra 1 and Beyond
In Fairfax County Public Schools, building strong academic skills starts early. From kindergarten through sixth grade, students practice problem-solving and early algebra every day. Because of this, more students are ready to take Algebra 1 by eighth grade.
Over the past three years, the number of eighth graders taking Algebra 1 has gone up by 18% for all student groups. Employee Use of Social Media RegulationRegulation 7004 includes requirements and responsibilities for employee use of social media. The regulation includes definitions and rules for official, professional, and personal social media accounts.
FCPS official and FCPS professional social media accounts can only be used for FCPS business, such as sharing classroom photos/videos of students. Personal social media accounts must be kept separate from FCPS official and FCPS professional accounts.
