Preparing for Severe Weather
According to the National Weather Service (NWS), severe weather preparedness is essential for all schools. And FCPS takes this kind of preparedness very seriously. Our processes, policies, and procedures are designed to keep students, staff, and visitors safe during severe weather. We use industry best practices and insights from emergency management organizations like the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and NWS to inform our approach. Because the truth is, every storm is different, with their own set of unique challenges.
Each of our schools, in coordination with our Office of Safety and Security, has developed severe and inclement weather plans. One of the guiding principals to these plans aligns with the NWS' recommendation to "put as many walls between you and the storm as possible." With that in mind, the information on this webpage provides a high-level overview of FCPS' approach to severe weather safety and how we make decisions that keep students, staff, and visitors safe.
