Central Office

Jacqueline Massingill, Transition Support Resource Center-Herndon (Pictured Above)

"I'd like to recognize Jacqueline Massingill for her exceptional ability to support a student in a moment of distress. After a challenging meeting, the student was on the verge of leaving school visibly upset. Jacqueline stepped in with great care and empathy, ensuring that the child felt heard and understood. Through her calm and reassuring presence, she was able to help the student regain composure, preventing further emotional distress. Moreover, the Jacqueline didn't stop there. She worked collaboratively with the student to develop an educational plan that was not only tailored to the student’s needs but one that the student felt comfortable and motivated to participate in. This thoughtful and proactive approach not only helped in resolving the immediate emotional situation but also set the stage for a more positive and productive path forward in the student’s learning journey. Jacqueline’s commitment to the student’s well-being and success is truly commendable."

Bethany Slingerland, Madison HS

"The dedication of Bethany Slingerland to her students is exemplary. As a teacher of Multi-Lingual Learners, Bethany scaffolds and differentiates the learning material to meet the learning level of each individual student while she simultaneously ensures that the material has real-life applications. Bethany leads the way in supporting the social emotional wellness for her students, collaborating with all staff members that support the student to ensure the school experience is one that empowers student growth. Her philanthropic nature extends beyond the classroom as she spearheads a winter clothing drive that caters to the specific need of each individual student helping to provide them winter essentials the student would otherwise go without. Bethany celebrates the diverse backgrounds her students bring to the school in an annual International Night event that brings together the multi-lingual learners and their families to embrace their culture. It is due to Bethany's consistent, determined support and celebration of her students that facilitates an incredible sense of belonging for them in the school environment."

Emily Bradshaw & Ashley Lowry, McLean HS

"Emily Bradshaw and Ashley Lowry have continually been a resource and sounding board for our student when navigating a challenging teacher, helping determine how to best communicate and initiate tough conversations. Along the way both Mrs. Bradshaw and Mrs. Lowry have checked in to see how that conversations went, following up with advice and encouragement, brainstorming next steps, etc. They have been huge advocates for our student, and we are so grateful for their professionalism and willingness to create a meaningful connection with our student and helping her along the way. She has gained skills of self-advocacy, building confidence to approach a superior, and navigate hard situations with the encouragement of these two amazing administrators. It's also great that through their many check-ins, they continually ask about other things going on in her life- how was that game last night? How was your holiday? How can we support you going forward? We hope they can be acknowledged for their ability to problem solve and make connections with students at school."

William Hurd, Fort Hunt ES

"Bill Hurd’s commitment to the continued success and growth of his students is noticeable the moment you enter his classroom. Bill encourages creativity and making daily connections, both big and small, with all students and staff. I admire his ability to form these connections, especially considering his newer role at Fort Hunt. Despite only having his position for a short period of time, Bill goes above and beyond to help others in their own roles. Bill has (without any hesitance) provided me and many others with support and guidance- sharing effective teaching strategies, lesson plans, advice, and feedback. Bill fosters an atmosphere of teamwork and open communication, where colleagues feel comfortable reaching out with questions or seeking advice. Bill’s approachable nature and willingness to assist others contribute to a positive school culture and has helped me in many ways as I move through my new role at FH. Through his mentorship, Bill not only elevates his students but also empowers his fellow educators to strive for excellence in their own practices. I have learned so much from him in my time here and look forward to continuing our work together and seeing the work he continues to make with his students."

Kathryn Stevens, Cherry Run ES

"I would like to give our incredible school psychologist, Kathryn Stevens, a FCPS CARES shoutout! Kathryn goes above and beyond to make sure our staff feels connected to one another and spreads joy throughout our building. Kathryn understands that taking care of our mental health means we can show up and be better educators and colleagues. Kathryn recently set up a Cardinal Coffee Bar in our staff lounge. She stocked the beautiful white hutch with a Keurig and coffee cups, creamer, and mugs. Warm lights surround the hutch to add a touch of warmth and calm and gives teachers an extra moment of peace before returning back to their hectic lesson plans. Kathryn has also organized a Valentine Day game for all staff and frequently organizes a Lotto Pool, so if one wins, we all win! She has helped write and submit grants for our outdoor learning environment and been an integral part of the planning and preparation. Kathryn is much appreciated for all she does, at a school where she only spends half her time! Kathryn, thank you for your many acts of kindness!"

Dara Markenson, Fairfax HS

"Ms. Markenson serves as the school counselor for my two children attending Fairfax High School. She has been exceptionally responsive to their educational and emotional needs, demonstrating a level of support that surpasses any previous experiences they have had with counselors. My daughter, a senior, greatly values Ms. Markenson’ s thoughtful inquiries regarding her future and her efforts in ensuring that she applies to colleges aligned with her aspirations. Additionally, Ms. Markenson was prompt and diligent in providing school transcripts and recommendations. My son, a freshman, initially faced challenges in navigating new social relationships; however, with Ms. Markenson’ s guidance, he has successfully formed a friend group that accepts each other's interests and fun personalities. I can attest to Ms. Markenson’ s effectiveness through her work with my two children, who exhibit vastly different personalities and academic needs. Her ability to meet them where they are and foster a supportive environment is genuinely appreciated in our household. I wholeheartedly believe that she is the best school counselor my children have ever had. Thank you for all you have done this year."

Jen Blanco, Holmes MS

fcps cares holmes middle school february 2025

"Jen Blanco goes above and beyond to celebrate students and literacy. She looks for every opportunity to provide students access to diverse books, to celebrate reading, and to honor student authors. She engages students with texts that help them see mirrors and windows. She is highly collaborative and supportive of teachers and staff. She ensures that students in need have access to special events like the Book Fair -- she helped my group of reluctant readers pick out books to own, when they wouldn't have otherwise been able to afford the books. She selected a wide range of high-interest titles for a family engagement event that included free dinner and a book distribution. She selected books for a "Free Book Fair" for our Young Scholars students. When a literacy class was celebrating publishing their stories, she ordered bears to honor the Pooh theme and designed a poster for all the students to sign that will be displayed in the library. She happily shares treats, wisdom, and good cheer with all who cross her path. We are extraordinarily lucky to have her as our Holmes MS librarian."

Daniela Arosemena, Beech Tree ES

"Ms. Arosemena or Ms. A goes above and beyond to care for her students inside and outside the classroom. We expected that my daughter who is new to the school this year as a 5th grader might have a hard time adjusting to the new environment, but thanks to Ms. A she has thrived. A self-professed “hater” of math, she is succeeding at learning math thanks to Ms. A’s engaging way of teaching math, but most importantly I have never seen a teacher be as involved in her students’ lives outside the classroom. When she heard my daughter was performing in the 5th grade honor choir in the pyramid she made sure she knew when it would be so she could cheer her on, at every event after school hours hosted by the PTA, including International Night and the Talent Show, she was the most vocal, supportive, and involved teacher. I don’t know how she has the energy to teach a full school day and then MC a talent show with a bunch of excited kids. She even agreed to participate in the talent show with my daughter at her request. I can’t imagine Beech Tree ES without Ms. A. My daughter who used to dislike school now is excited to go to school everyday and Ms. A is one hundred percent the reason behind it. Ms. A is one of a kind and deserves recognition."

Jesse Pesanka, Liberty MS

"Making the leap from elementary to middle school can be a whirlwind—new routines, bigger buildings, and lots of questions from parents and students alike. But in the midst of all that change, Jesse Pesanka has been a shining light, guiding families through the transition with expertise, warmth, and a deep commitment to student success. Jesse doesn’t just know the ins and outs of middle school courses and electives—he lives them. He has a remarkable ability to explain options in a way that makes sense for each individual student, ensuring families feel confident about the choices ahead. More than that, he understands that this transition isn’t just about logistics; it’s about easing worries and making sure every student is set up for success. He takes the time to answer questions about IEP goals, how electives can support student growth, and even encourages families to consider honors classes when a student’s interests or strengths align. This year, Jesse has handled this process with incredible finesse and confidence, making a potentially stressful time much smoother for students and parents alike. We are beyond grateful to have someone as knowledgeable, compassionate, and dedicated as Jesse at Liberty Middle School. Our students are lucky to have him in their corner, and we are lucky to be sending them off with such a caring and committed educator leading the way!

Carrie Ragona, Woodburn ES

"Ms. Ragona has been instrumental in fostering a love for music and the arts in students at Woodburn. This spring, she is bringing back a beloved club, Drama Club, providing students with a creative outlet to explore the world of theater. Ms. Ragona plays a crucial role in our partnership with the Fairfax Symphony Orchestra (FSO). She is an advocate for the program and is passionate about providing our students with unique opportunities that they may not otherwise have. Through this partnership, multiple grade levels will visit a concert hall and see a live performance while playing along with some of their songs. Ms. Ragona also partners with teachers across our building to model Arts Integration to enhance learning across all subjects. We are so fortunate to have Ms. Ragona as a member of our specialist team!"

Michael Williams, Lorton Center

"On behalf of West Springfield School, I want to extend my deepest gratitude to Michael for his exceptional support and dedication in making our annual school-wide field trip a resounding success. Although new to supporting our school, Michael went above and beyond to learn about our trip, understand our needs, and provide the necessary support to ensure the day ran smoothly. From coordinating 18 buses for our journey to the museums in Washington, D.C., to personally connecting with staff beforehand, he meticulously planned and organized every detail with care. His efforts — from creating clear bus signage to being present on the morning of departure to oversee a seamless send-off — truly exceeded expectations. Michael’s commitment and hard work transformed a complex logistical undertaking into a smooth and stress-free experience, allowing students and staff to focus on the excitement of the day. His contribution was invaluable, and we are incredibly fortunate to have him as part of our team for a successful 2025 West Springfield Elementary School-wide Field Trip. Thank you again, Michael, for making this trip memorable and for your ongoing dedication to our school community."

Kathy Eckert, Nancy Sprague Technology Center

"I am writing to express my deepest appreciation and nominate Kathy for an FCPS Cares recognition. Kathy’s extraordinary efforts in assisting me with the creation of a registration form for our Federal Workers Job and Information Fair, using the Let's Talk app, were absolutely crucial to the event’s success. This event was initiated at the request of Dr. Reid, Superintendent, making the timely implementation of the registration process paramount. Kathy recognized the critical timing, and the extremely short turnaround time required to get the registration form up and running. Without hesitation, she dropped her ongoing tasks to prioritize this urgent need. She not only provided invaluable expertise in designing and implementing the registration form, ensuring it was branded and functional, but also offered best practices that significantly improved the user experience. Her guidance was instrumental in creating a seamless and efficient registration process. What truly set Kathy apart was her unwavering dedication. She meticulously monitored the responses, even over the weekend and during the holiday weekend, demonstrating an exceptional level of commitment. She was consistently available, including the evening before the event, to address any issues and ensure we captured all necessary information. Her dedication ensured that everyone who needed to register was able to do so smoothly. As a result of her work, we were able to register 311 attendees and another 126 on the wait list. Kathy’s kindness, meticulous follow-through, and genuine passion for ensuring the project’s success were evident throughout the entire process. She made this project her top priority, dedicating her full effort and expertise. Her support was absolutely vital, especially given the Superintendent’s request and the tight timeframe. Kathy’s exceptional service exemplifies the spirit of the FCPS Cares program, and I wholeheartedly recommend her for this recognition. Her commitment to helping others, her ability to recognize and respond to critical needs, and her willingness to go above and beyond are truly commendable."

Diana Grace, Mantua ES

"I am writing to nominate Diana Grace for an award in recognition of her outstanding dedication, compassion, and commitment to not only teaching but truly caring for my son during his time in her classroom. Diana was his first in-person teacher, and she became so much more than that to our family.

When you first met my son, it was impossible to ignore the complexity of his needs. He was non-mobile, non-verbal, and required extensive medical equipment, including a ventilator, suction machine, and a nurse by his side at all times. The setup itself could be intimidating to anyone unfamiliar with his needs. But to Ms. Grace, he was simply a sweet, loving boy with so much potential—potential that she saw even when others might have been overwhelmed by the circumstances. She truly understood what I saw in him.

To teach my son, Ms. Grace didn’t just follow the usual lesson plans. She had to adapt everything to meet his unique needs—sometimes reworking her approach multiple times to ensure he could participate fully. I never once felt that my son was a burden. On the contrary, Ms. Grace embraced him and made him feel like a valued member of the class. She made sure he was included, not just in lessons, but in the heart of the classroom. I could see her genuine love for teaching him.

In January 2022, we tragically lost our son. The grief I felt as a mother was unimaginable. Yet, even in her own grief, Ms. Grace remained a pillar of support for our family. She sent books to comfort his sisters, attended his funeral, and had a special bench placed on the preschool playground in his honor—ensuring that his memory would live on in that space. She continued to celebrate my son’s legacy by creating special projects and displaying his pictures in her classroom. To this day, Ms. Grace honors our son by wearing a "Super (child’s name)" t-shirt on the anniversary of his passing and his birthday.

Ms. Grace’s unwavering support, compassion, and dedication go far beyond what is expected of a teacher. She was there for us in our darkest days, and her actions have shown us the true meaning of kindness and care. Her impact on our family is immeasurable, and we will forever be grateful for the love and warmth she gave Jaxon during his time on this earth.

Ms. Grace is not only a remarkable teacher, but also a constant reminder to be brave in the face of hardship. She loved my son, not just as a student, but as a person, and she continues to carry his memory with her in everything she does. Thank you, Ms. Grace, for everything. We are beyond grateful for you and the love you’ve shown our family.

Karen Hertel, Pipi Harrison, Belinda Williams, Jordan Simmons, Cindy Waddell & all Bryant staff, Bryant HS

"I would like to honor and give recognition to the staff at Bryant. My husband unexpectedly passed away in January. The entire staff joined together as a family team to make sure I had anything I needed. Not only did they surround me with care, concern, love, compassion and understanding. They went above and beyond to help me in any way they could. They checked in on me. They helped with my classes and students while I was not able to work. They sent me cards and texts. They even brought me cards from my students. My admin Ms Hertel would respond to my texts or calls immediately. When i had a stressful issue with my husbands benefits and I could not get answers from anyone. She called and had answers for me within minutes. She took away a load of stress and then sent me a list of the right people to help me and my family. The staff at Bryant was able to help me thru the most difficult time in my life. They made the worst time of my life a little better. The love and care they gave me is priceless and not something many work environments have. But here at Bryant we really are a family. When I returned to work. I was greeted with hugs and a plan in place if I needed to step away or a moment to myself. The entire staff had my back and checked on me regularly to see if i needed anything. They are still doing that. Which is one of the many reasons I love being a part of this Bryant team. To know you are loved, supported and cared about is the greatest feeling ever at work. That is what makes the Bryant family special and unique ."

Jonathan Dodge & Michael Williams, Lorton Center

"Bailey’s Upper ES would like to take a moment to express our heartfelt appreciation for our incredible bus transportation staff, especially Michael Williams and Jonathan Dodge. Their dedication and support were instrumental in ensuring our spring after-school clubs could successfully launch on February 4th, despite the challenges caused by multiple snow days in January. Typically, transportation requests require 3–5 days’ notice, yet their team worked closely with our after-school coordinator and managed to pull everything together in under 72 hours—an incredible feat! Beyond that, their ongoing support during both our fall and spring after-school sessions has been invaluable. From answering questions and adjusting student bus routes to ensuring we have buses available each week, their efforts have made a significant impact. Our students are so grateful for the opportunity to participate in after-school clubs, and our parents deeply appreciate the reliable transportation home. Simply put, we couldn’t run a successful after-school program without our transportation department—especially Michael and Jonathan. Thank you for your hard work, dedication, and continued support of Bailey’s Upper ES after-school clubs!"

Chelsea Ettere, Woodburn ES

"Ms. Ettere is one of the Math Resource teachers here at Woodburn. I've had the pleasure of working with her in my role as Assistant Principal when she was a first grade teacher and am thrilled to working with her again as the Principal here. Chelsea has solid knowledge of math and the strategies need to support students and teachers at the elementary level. She works to find new ways to help students progress. She has championed AVMR training here and provides coaching support in this area so teachers feel successful in utilizing the strategies. She has dived into learning through Project GLAD to ensure our multilingual learners are exposed to tools to help them acquire math skills and academic language to help them share thinking. She is a positive presence and will always to learn and shift thinking. Woodburn is fortunate to have her here!"

His deep care for students and for arts instruction is clear. He has been part of the CETA experience and most recently, showcased a connection with the FSO (Fairfax Symphony Orchestra) along with his music colleague. In my short time as principal, I've noticed his time and dedication to the students and staff here and his passion for promoting the arts. This was one of the first things he discussed with me as I was getting to know the school. His enthusiasm, kindness, and hard work make him one of the shining stars here at Woodburn. We are so lucky to have him."

Lynn Bush & Deborah MacLean, White Oaks ES

""My husband and I want to extend major kudos to the health office, Debbie MacLean and counselor Lynn Bush for the incredible support they gave our daughter yesterday. She fell off the monkey bars during recess and broke her arm, and unfortunately I was unreachable because I am not permitted to have my phone with me in my office. I was also in a meeting at the time, so I wasn't at my desk when they called the office. They were able to reach my husband but as he works deep in Maryland, it took him over an hour to get back to the area. Ms. MacLean was able to call an ambulance as our daughter was in a lot of pain, and Ms. Bush rode on the ambulance with her to the ER. While I'm sure there were other staff involved, we wanted to acknowledge these two by name but hope the others know how much we appreciate them. We can't thank the White Oaks staff enough for handling the situation so well and making sure our daughter was comfortable. As some of you may know, she is a pretty highly anxious kid so the fact that she came home in good spirits attests to how warmly she was cared for during such a stressful time. Thank you so much and we are so glad to be part of the WOES family!"

In addition, Faye has a very strong knowledge of both the curriculum, and how to practically teach it that she is able to collaborate with our staff on. She is a great partner to our work and we appreciate her as part of our Office of School Support partnership. Thank you for your collaboration!"

Katherine Cadena-Gonce, Freedom Hill ES

"Katherine Cadena-Gonce has been at Freedom Hill for more than 20 years, her passion, dedication and commitment to the students, the community and staff is unremarkable. There is no day here on the Hill where she does not go above and far beyond to help, comfort and make things better for everyone. I can think of many times she's helped current students and students who came to FH many many years ago. One of our FH students who is now in her late 20s and her children attend our school is going through a difficult time, Katherine has made sure that the kids are taken care of, but also makes sure that the mother is helped in any way needed. Even for myself, I was out sick and she supported me here at work like she always does, always asked if I needed anything because she knows I was alone at home. She treats us all like we are her family, or students as if they were her own."

Michelle Keenan, Kings Glen ES

"Last night we had the first 4th Grade String Concert. This is the first time many students, including my son, have ever played an instrument—especially a string (Violin, Cello, Bass Or Viola). And they all played like they’ve been playing for years instead of 4 months. Dr. Keenan exhibited expertise, knowledge, and kindness to all the 4th grade string students. They listened and watched her as she lead them through the concert. She stood at the front of a piano and expertly played—while standing— to lead the 4th graders through many short songs. We were blown away. My son speaks very highly of her on String Days. He can be nervous around large groups or when performing in front of others. The environment, prep, and pep talking Dr. Keenan gave him and his fellow students, had my son coming home proud and thoroughly enjoyed playing in the concert. He told us last night, that he had a lot of fun and was looking forward to the Spring String Concert. And so are we. Thank you so much Dr. Keenan.

Naela Ahmed, Kings Park ES

"Mrs. Ahmed is my child’s Special Education (SpEd) teacher. She teaches my child specially designed instruction on the subjects my child needs. But there is so much more to SpEd teachers. Sometimes a student needs something different than instruction. Sometimes they need a soft voice, caring compassion and gentle smiles. That “extra” part of being a teacher is what my daughter needed one day when she didn’t have the confidence to walk into school. Mrs. Ahmed came out to met her at our car. She got down to her level and spoke to her in calming tones and with gentle smiles. Held out her hand and without resistance my daughter accepted Mrs. Ahmed’s hand. And they walked into school together. Parents don’t get the chance to see their children’s teacher work with their children very often. And being able to watch the magic that Mrs. Ahmed has with her students was truly a gift to see. And she is a gift to all her students. Thank you Mrs. Ahmed.

" I am grateful for Jordyn's professionalism, expertise and follow through. A staff member at Union Mill shared the process Louise Archer uses when a staff member is out for the day. As a school, we were looking for a process to ensure staff were aware of who is out on a particular day. Jordyn connected virtually, shared a model and even created a template for Union Mill to consider using. She followed up to collaborate with staff at Union Mill. As a result of her support we have been able to launch a new process to ensure staff is aware of absences on a daily basis. Jordyn is a great asset to Louise Archer and FCPS. Thank you!"

Kristen Marker, Robinson Secondary

"Kristen Marker creates a welcoming environment for her students by making her classroom a place for inclusive learning. In her science class, she makes sure to have accessible materials that she often creates herself. She gives students options so that they can pick materials that work best for them, for example, image descriptions, modified graphics, and tangible objects. She also records videos for students to learn from when materials are challenging to access. She checks in with students to make sure they can use class materials, and she adjusts in the moment when needed. Ms. Marker works tirelessly to help students with all learning styles succeed in her classroom!"

Blair Armstrong, Robinson Secondary

"High school can be such a challenging experience for some students. Navigating social interactions, full course of study, and/or feeling overwhelmed by the many responsibilities and competing contingencies. It is extremely important for students to have a person to speak to that will help them navigate the complexities of their day, their emotions, social interaction, or just someone to connect with and feel heard and seen. Ms. Blair Armstrong is that person. My daughter has come home on numerous days sharing how much Ms. Blair has helped her, been their to talk her through situations, encourage her, and cheer her on. Ms. Blair is firm, yet caring and nurturing. While her primary role is not to sit and listen and process through situations with students, she takes time out of her day to make time for them, gives them a safe space to talk, feel heard, seen, and validates their feelings. What my daughter loves most about talking with Ms. Blair, is that she treats her with respect, no judgement, genuinely cares, and is the nicest person with a big heart. As a parent, it is so important to me is that my daughter has a person that is "her person," someone she has fostered a trusting, authentic, and supportive relationship. In a time when children experience so many emotions that can weigh on them and can potentially result in students engaging in unproductive or potentially dangerous ways to get through what they find difficult, it is comforting to know that she has fostered that relationship with Ms. Blair. I am extremely thankful for her caring and calming nature, her love and support of the students, and her ability and willingness to listen and help students feel seen and heard. That goes a long way and has a huge impact on our children. It only takes one positive relationship to change the perspective, attitude, and/or behavior of a person. Kindness matters, and for that reason, I wanted to send this FCPS Care to share how Ms. Blair goes above and beyond. Thank you Ms. Blair."

Lindsay Peterson, Lane ES

" I want to express my sincere gratitude for the incredible work Lindsay Peterson, our long-term art substitute has done over the past few months. She has gone above and beyond in every aspect of her role as a substitute art teacher. Lindsay wears many hats at Lane Elementary, she is a parent, community, staff, and vigilante PTA member. Beyond covering classes, she has dedicated countless hours, often staying late, to ensure a smooth transition for my returning colleague. The art room is beautifully organized and welcoming thanks to her efforts. She also cultivates a warm and inviting atmosphere throughout the school, from the vibrant houseplants in the main office to the constantly replenished supply of hot beverages in the staff lounge. Her lessons are engaging and fun, and students have continued to explore a wide range of art mediums under her guidance while their art teacher has been away. Finally, the beautiful student artwork displayed in our hallways is a testament to her dedication and talent. My colleagues have been complimenting the displays, but all the credit belongs to her. We are incredibly fortunate to have her, and her contributions are deeply appreciated."

She assists with proctoring, including doing many one-on-one sessions with students who are more nervous about completing the Speaking test around other students. She has been a tremendous help with locating students within the building who still need to test. She makes my job as Assessment Coach much more manageable at this time of year. We couldn't do it without her!!"

Christine Lee, Eagle View ES

"I wanted to take a moment to express my sincere appreciation for Mrs. Christine Lee and the incredible impact she has made on my child. Her dedication to her students extends far beyond the classroom, and her genuine support has not gone unnoticed. Not only does she inspire and engage her students academically, which we had the privilege of experiencing last academic year, but she also goes above and beyond to encourage them in their personal pursuits. We were truly touched when she took the time to attend my child’s travel soccer match last spring. Her presence meant the world to him and showed just how much she cares about her students as individuals. This year she has welcomed our child back weekly to take on helpful tasks around the classroom as a volunteer. She continues to be a role model and supporter even after he departed EV as a student. Further, she goes out her way to acknowledge his little brother, a current 4th grader at Eagle View, and make him feel welcome and important as he goes about his day at school. She is a special teacher and a clear demonstration of the type of educator we need more of! Mrs. Lee’s commitment to fostering a supportive and uplifting environment is a testament to her passion for teaching. I feel incredibly fortunate to have her guiding and encouraging my children. Iffat Batool, McNair Upper ES

"At the beginning of the 24-25 school year, McNair Upper ES had an enhanced autism teacher vacancy that we could not fill. As a result, we opened up the search for a long-term substitute teacher that Ms. Batool applied for. From the moment the interviewing panel met Ms. Batool, we knew she was the right fit for the students, families, and colleagues she would work alongside in this role. It is now mid-February and Ms. Batool is still serving in this role. Ms. Batool is an incredibly warm and caring colleague who exemplifies professionalism. She shows up to work every day with a both a positive attitude and a smile that is contagious. Although the students Ms. Batool supports have both academic and socio-emotional needs; many of whom are also non-verbal, she handles the job with great ease. She works collaboratively with a team to ensure her students feel safe, respected, and are learning to the best of their ability. She is reflective and accepts feedback, not only, to better herself, but to support the students she has grown to love. Ms. Batool has gone above and beyond the role of a long-term substitute and is deserving of this recognition. Carrington Beasley, Amanda Bowser, & John Stimac, Bryant HS

"I would like to recognize and extend my appreciation to three outstanding educators who make up Bryant’s MTSS (Multi-Tiered System of Supports) Team: Carrington Beasley, Amanda Bowser, and Dr. John Stimac. Each of these individuals plays a critical role in our efforts to support and uplift every student at Bryant, and their dedication to our MTSS work is truly commendable.

Carrington Beasley leads our Academic Subcommittee, where she is spearheading a Literacy Activity across content areas, encouraging all teachers to participate. Her initiative not only fosters collaboration among educators but also helps identify the most effective methods in their classrooms, creating opportunities for teachers to share and learn from one another.

Amanda Bowser heads our Wellness Subcommittee and has focused on the social-emotional well-being of our students. By analyzing the SEL (Social-Emotional Learning) Screener, she identifies where students struggle the most, and is creating a monthly bulletin board highlighting emotional awareness and positive coping strategies. Her work ensures that our students receive the support they need to thrive both academically and personally.

Dr. John Stimac, leading our Behavior/Attendance Subcommittee, tirelessly analyzes attendance data and has developed a comprehensive attendance survey to understand why students are missing school. His dedication to identifying the root causes and creating targeted interventions is pivotal in our ongoing efforts to combat chronic absenteeism at Bryant.

Together, these three educators collaborate closely, meeting weekly to organize and plan sub-group and whole-group committee meetings. They complement each other’s strengths and work seamlessly to implement effective interventions, at a Tier 1, 2 and 3 level, that directly support our students. Their commitment to building relationships, fostering a positive school environment, and using data-driven strategies is inspiring. I am truly honored to oversee such an incredible team, and I am deeply grateful for the passion and commitment they bring to our MTSS work. They make a significant impact on our students’ lives every day, and we are lucky to have them as part of Team Bryant!"

With every call—yes, there was more than one—and every email—yes, there were several—Val was there with patience, kindness, and an incredible depth of knowledge. She took the time to not only answer my questions but also help me figure out what I needed to ask in the first place. Her ability to explain the process clearly, combined with her reassuring demeanor, made all the difference. You truly made a difference in my journey!"

Melissa Caballero, Bryant HS

"I would like to recognize Melissa "Claudia" Caballero for an FCPS Cares award. Bryant holds not one, but two graduations each year, which means double the work: award assemblies, programs, and all the planning and coordination that go into organizing a high school graduation. Melissa works tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure everything is ready, often chasing down others to gather the necessary details to make it all happen. Despite the challenges, she does it all with a positive attitude and a smiling face, never complaining. Melissa consistently puts others first, and to say that she lightens my load is truly an understatement. Since after winter break, we have been short-staffed with a missing family liaison, front office person, and administrative assistant. Yet, she goes above and beyond, stepping up daily to assist at the front desk, answer questions, handle attendance, all while managing the planning of this February graduation and the daily responsibilities of enrolling new students as our Student Services registrar. I simply cannot thank Melissa enough. I am incredibly grateful to have someone like her, who is always solution-oriented and ready to step in, with a smile to match!"

Joshua Saville, Hunters Woods ES

"Our amazing art teacher, Mr. Joshua Saville, created a large paint-by-number mural in one of our school hallways. He thought it might be something fun to start the new year. Initially it was a pencil sketch, and even then the students and teachers were intrigued. Mr. Saville then invited staff members to visit the space and paint an area of their choosing. Teachers and staff members could be seen throughout the week stopping to add a color to the wall. Students walking by were thrilled to see as, little by little, the mural neared completion. "I give that a 12 out of 10!", one first grader said. "Wow! That's our school!", said another. "All of the teachers are artists!", another student chimed in. The mural was the talk of the town amongst adults, too. Many sharing how much they loved the idea and the opportunity to participate as a part of our staff family. The amount of joy this kind gesture brought to our entire school can't be measured. THANK YOU, Mr. Saville! We appreciate you!"

-Laura King, Hunters Wood ES

Kim Hudson, Key Center

"Kim Hudson is an outstanding teacher. My son has been in her class for several years at Key Center and she continues to amaze me with new ideas and strategies to help my son learn and be able to participate in his environment. She is a keen observer and picks up on small changes in his demeanor -- she can basically spot a seizure coming from a mile away. Kim is also a greater communicator which is so important when dealing with a non-verbal kid like mine. She makes me feel "in the loop" about his day which I love since he can't tell me himself. Thank you, Kim. "

Kenny Carter & Brad Hollis, Instructional Programs Support Center

"Kenny, Brad and their team helped the Adapted Curriculum team facilitate the creation and distribution of over 1,100 workboxes for special education students in our Career Preparation classes at high schools throughout FCPS They helped us as materials were delivered and were amazing throughout the process. The moved pallets of items up and down off of various shelves and helped us get whatever items we needed each day. They were warm and welcoming to our community outreach volunteers from the Downs Syndrome Association of Northern Virginia. Once all of the workboxes were put together they wrapped all of the pallets and delivered materials to 24 schools. Throughout the process they went out of their way to be thoughtful, helpful, and make sure everything went smoothly. Thanks to their hard work and dedication, students throughout the county will have materials to help them build career skills they will use long after they leave FCPS. Thank you Brad and Kenny for your support!'

" Anyone who works with Abbi knows that she goes above and beyond to support both the staff and her students! Her patience, attention to detail, and dedication is outstanding. As the Biology CT Lead, Abbi works tirelessly to foster collaboration and advocate for the needs of students and her team. She mentors Biology Teachers who are new to Justice (and FCPS) and helps out in the Science Department wherever she can, listening to others and finding solutions that benefit not solely the Biology Team, but our department as a whole. She provides the calm in the storm that is sometimes desperately needed. Despite her busy schedule as Head Volleyball Coach, she still checks in on others (including myself!) with the understanding of not just a colleague, but the compassion of a friend. I hope that she knows her efforts do not go unseen, and we appreciate having her in the Science Department. Justice High School is so lucky!"

Ingy Rucker, Union Mill ES

"I would like to nominate Ingy Rucker for the FCPS Cares Award, as she truly embodies the qualities of an outstanding educator. Words like "amazing," "outstanding," and "phenomenal" hardly scratch the surface when describing the impact she has on her students. Ms. Rucker’s love for her students goes beyond the classroom—she genuinely cares about their well-being, always in tune with how they are feeling and offering support when they aren't quite themselves.

Her classroom is a place where trust, joy, and excitement for learning flourish. She builds deep, meaningful relationships with her students, ensuring that each one feels seen, heard, and valued. One of the many ways Ms. Rucker nurtures her students is through lunch bunches, where she brings together students from her class and even invites those from other classes to join in a relaxed and welcoming environment. Her joy and passion for teaching radiate through everything she does, and she seamlessly combines the roles of teacher and mentor.

Ms. Rucker is also incredibly intentional in celebrating student successes, big or small. Whether it’s recognizing academic achievements, personal growth, or acts of kindness, she ensures that each student feels proud of their accomplishments. She celebrates them with enthusiasm, offering praise and encouragement that motivates her students to continue striving for greatness. This recognition fosters a positive, supportive environment where students feel confident and inspired to reach their potential.

Her communication with families is exceptional—far more than just the standard weekly updates. She goes above and beyond, sending quick notes and photos whenever something fun or exciting happens in the classroom. Whether it’s a small victory or a special moment, she keeps families connected and involved. She is always responsive and takes time to address any concerns from students or parents with understanding and care.

As a parent, I feel incredibly fortunate to have Ms. Rucker in my daughter’s life. She is everything you hope for in a teacher and more. In uncertain times, she has proven to be a steady rock for her students, staff, and families, and her unwavering commitment to her students is truly inspiring. Juan Meza, Sideburn Support Center

"The day before an impending ice event, our sand delivery did not occur. As a result, I reached out to the Facilities Office for help, and that office connected me to Juan. Juan wanted to help, but everyone had been sent home early because they were needed at 4am the next day. Juan was able to get a few of his staff members to come back to Sideburn, load up their truck, and then deliver the sand to Dranesville (about 40 miles round trip) during rush hour. As a result, we were ready to go for the ice the next morning. He could have easily told us he couldn't do it, but Juan did it because "the students' safety is the most important thing." Thanks Juan!"

Her level of communication is unparalleled, providing parents with the insights and tools needed to reinforce lessons at home. She intuitively knows when a child needs encouragement, when they need discipline, and how to guide them in a way that is both firm and compassionate—an ability that comes from her genuine care and investment in her students. Beyond the classroom, Mrs. Purcell plays an instrumental role in shaping young lives. She is not just a teacher; she is a mentor and a role model. She creates a learning environment where students feel supported, challenged, and valued. Her ability to connect with children on a personal level ensures that each student receives the guidance they need to become respectful, honorable, and impactful individuals. Speaking as a parent, I have personally seen the effect she has on my son. The values and discipline we instill at home are reinforced through her teaching, making it clear that she sees her role as more than just an educator—she sees herself as a key figure in helping raise future leaders. During a recent discussion with other parents, many of whom send their children to prestigious private schools, I found myself sharing how grateful I am for Mrs. Purcell, as she provides the same level of mentorship, structure, and care that parents often seek in specialized education. Mrs. Purcell’s dedication to her students and her willingness to go above and beyond in her role make her an invaluable asset to this school. She is shaping the future not just through academics, but through the lives she touches daily, ensuring that each student leaves her classroom not just smarter, but better prepared to be honorable, respectful, and capable members of society.
