Central Office
Haroon Rasheed & Colette Mendoza, Gatehouse Admin Center

"I would like to nominate Haroon Rasheed and Colette Mendoza for the FCPS Cares Award. As an elementary school principal, I have had the privilege of working with both Haroon and Colette during this critical time in education (and during the year) for hiring high quality teachers. Haroon and Colette provided details and information super quickly to both teacher applicants and me through multiple correspondences as well as during hours late into the evening! They provided support to ensure potential hires are communicated with around salary, budget and a long list of benefits of FCPS that they went above and beyond to share to help me seal the deal for two potential hires. This is a great example of the partnership and teamwork needed between schools and central office departments to truly work together as one FCPS! I can confidently say they embody the qualities that make FCPS a strong, supportive, and responsive district. Both Haroon and Colette consistently go above and beyond in their roles, providing the quickest, most responsive, and detail-oriented support I have encountered in any department. They are true examples of excellence in customer service, demonstrating not only a deep commitment to the schools and administrators they serve but also a genuine care for the people they work with. Their ability to respond to inquiries and provide solutions in a timely and thorough manner has made a lasting positive impact on our school’s ability to operate smoothly and efficiently. What stands out most about Haroon and Colette is their exceptional teamwork and the positive relationships they build with others. As individuals I've never met but only communicated with via email, they present as extremely approachable, willing to lend a helping hand, and quick to offer assistance when needed. Their dedication to creating a positive working environment fosters a strong sense of community within FCPS, and their collaborative efforts make them indispensable members of the team. Haroon and Colette's work is a shining example of what it means to provide excellent customer service. Based on interactions with a number of departments over the last 12+ years as a school administrator, they exceed expectations, and their commitment to their roles sets them apart from other departments. Their dedication to supporting the mission of FCPS, their responsiveness to the needs of the schools, and their unwavering professionalism deserve to be recognized and celebrated. I wholeheartedly recommend Haroon Rasheed and Colette Mendoza for the FCPS Cares Award and believe they are truly deserving of this honor.

Krista Smith, Beech Tree ES - View the celebration !

"Ms. Smith has been my child's SLP for the last three years and during that time, she has made a huge difference in not only his life, but our family's. When our child experienced unkind comments from peers about his stuttering, she sprang into action to ensure that the situation was addressed and that our child had the support he needed. She paired him with an older student who also stutters, to be his mentor, and their weekly lunch bunches are the highlight of his week. When more unkind comments happened a few months later, Ms. Smith worked with Beech Tree's wonderful school counselor, Ms. Torres, to facilitate a class circle. With his lunch buddy, our child was given an opportunity to lead a conversation about his experiences having a speech impairment and spark a conversation about accepting each others' differences. Rather than feeling like a victim, my child felt empowered by the chance to educate his peers and feel heard. The experience has increased his sense that his differences give him unique knowledge and abilities that he can share with the world. Ms. Smith is a dream member of the IEP team-- she communicates proactively, shares her expertise freely, welcomes parent input, and empowers students to take charge of their own learning and abilities. She is warm, energetic, and kind, and also professional and direct. We are so grateful that Ms. Krista Smith is Beech Tree's Speech-Language Pathologist."

"I want to take a moment to recognize and deeply thank my son’s special education teacher. From the very first day of school, she has gone above and beyond—not only for my son, but for me as a parent. She consistently keeps me updated with any concerns, progress, or little wins, which means so much. Her communication is thoughtful and honest, and I never feel out of the loop. What stands out most is her support. She reminds me often that I’m doing a great job as a mom, something I didn’t know I needed to hear until she said it. That kind of emotional support is rare and truly appreciated. It’s clear she was meant to work with special needs kids—her patience, kindness, and dedication show in everything she does. Knowing that my son has someone who genuinely cares about him when I’m not around gives me such peace. I’m beyond grateful for her, and I hope she knows how much of a difference she’s made in our lives."

Other FCPS CARES Submission
Rezaul Khan, Lorton Center
"Mr. Khan is the most amazing bus driver for Justice. Time and again, he goes out of his way to help us when we have unique transportation needs. A great example is that a special bus left without one of the students. Mr. Khan stayed to figure out a resolution. When it was discovered that this student’s housing situation was in limbo, Mr. Khan graciously drove them to a completely different part of the county in the middle of rush hour, even waiting to make sure the student made it safely inside upon arrival. Mr. Khan didn't get home until after 8pm, but he would 100% support us again. He has built amazing relationships with students and even recognizes students that he drove three years ago when that student was a 9th grader. Students remember him and treat him with respect. They know he will support them as best he can within his job. All of the Administration (which includes Assistant Principals, Director of Student Services, Deans of Students, and Systems of Support Advisor) enjoy working with him and are so appreciative to have him be the driver for our routes."
-Christy Hanlon, Justice HS

Gil Martinez, Lake Braddock Secondary
"Senor Martinez has gone above and beyond as a teacher, helping me grow as a student, and having an everlasting impact in my life. In 8th grade when I first entered Senor Martinez classroom my Spanish vocabulary, writing, and communication skills were weak. I struggled with writing sentences, conjugating vocab words, and would stutter in every conversation. But, under the tutelage of Senor Martinez, for two years he helped me improve drastically. By taking the time to have long conversations with me in class and outside of the classroom. Correcting my mispronunciations, helping me read and write in Spanish through entertaining projects, and having a charismatic teaching style that motivated me to come to class and learn. Senor Martinez helped convert my Spanish from incomprehensible to a Spanish that my family and Spanish friends finally understood what I was saying. Thanks to Senor Martinez teaching, it encouraged me to continue my Spanish career further into Spanish 4. Where I continued to improve my Spanish skills and become more comfortable with the language. At the conclusion of Spanish 4 my love for Spanish had grown so much that I decided to challenge myself by taking AP Spanish Language. When the schedules were released, I was overjoyed that Senor Martinez would be teaching my AP Spanish class. Although, I was frightened of taking a college level foreign language class. Senor Martinez made the class heaven on earth. As he gracefully taught Hispanic culture concepts such as Family structure, Globalization, writing structures such as writing an email, and how to write an argumentative essay in Spanish. My Spanish understanding grew to a new level that never before would have been possible. This was fully represented in the AP exam where I earned a score of 5 on the exam. When I received my score, I was over the moon with excitement and felt so proud of my growth in half a decade of taking Spanish classes. This high moment in my life would not have been possible without Senor Martinez, and he even took time out his summer to congratulate me on my score. Today I am enrolled in AP Spanish Literature and Culture, a milestone that when I first entered Senor Martinez class would have been impossible. But after learning from him for three years, and him taking the time to teach me and work on my flaws. My growth in Spanish has been exponential and I can proudly say that I am bilingual."

"Shout out to the amazing Mr. Gibson! His recent work educating our community on digital citizenship has been outstanding. The 45 minute after school parent academy made important digital citizenship concepts relatable with real-world examples and provided invaluable hands-on opportunities for us to engage in the material with both staff and our own children around the topic of media wellbeing and balance. Thank you for empowering us all to navigate the digital world more thoughtfully and responsibly! This parent academy sparked an opportunity for my family to work through some of the challenges we have been having around screen time lately so it was timely and relevant! I look forward to more events like this."

"Miss Julie is always going above and beyond not only for Ms. Thatcher's students but for all students at Woodlawn Elementary School. It is not possible to walk past her in the hall without being greeted with a smile, a wave, or a hello! Most likely you're going to get all 3! Her positivity is infections, and i cant think of anyone better to step up and teach my kiddo when Ms. Thatcher is out of the classroom. I got to see her "in action" at dismissal recently, and the smiles on every kiddos face( even on the faces of the other pre k class)was all I needed to know about what kind of person she is. I am thankful for the whole team at Woodlawn, but today I just wanted to say thankyou, and I appreciate you Miss Julie!"

Leigh Ashurst & Katherine Hughes, Keene Mill ES
"Ms. Hughes and Mrs. Ashurst have gone above and beyond to support my daughter this year. I have consistently been impressed by their love and support, and especially Ms. Hughes' ability to build such a strong relationship as the classroom teacher. The transition from our neighborhood school to the center program was one that our family weighed extensively, knowing how important it is for our daughter to feel safe and connected. Her anxiety escalated immensely at the beginning of the year, but she has consistently reiterated to us that she feels safe and deeply connected to Ms. Hughes. She consistently will tell me "Mommy, Ms. Hughes is my person at school. She takes care of me. You don't need to worry about school stuff." It's been such a blessing in building her confidence. Mrs. Ashurst has been a tremendous support also, and was instrumental in building our team and helping us get outside care. She has always been there for breaks, and has become another trusted adult that will be an ongoing resource. We had a meeting a few weeks ago, and I was impressed with how well the whole team knows my daughter and the thoughtful input they had to help her succeed with testing and into next year. I am so grateful that my daughter is with such a caring team -- that truly embodies FCPS' Strategic Plan goal for students to feel "safe, supported, included, and empowered."

"There are many teachers and faculty members at Stone Middle School who deserve praise, but I want to specifically highlight Ms. Schroeder, my son’s eighth-grade math teacher. My son has worked hard to maintain straight A’s throughout middle school, but recently he struggled with a math concept and found it challenging to understand. Recognizing his frustration, Ms. Schroeder took the time to call me and discuss how I could help him with extra practice. She also offered to sit with him to identify exactly where his understanding broke down. I truly appreciate her efforts. Ms. Schroeder was also his math teacher last year, and she teaches in a way that helps my son grasp the material. I want to emphasize that she consistently goes above and beyond what is required and shows a genuine interest in her students."

Mary Allan, Hayfield Secondary
"Mrs. Mary Allan, is the Administrative Professional in Hayfield Secondary's Director of Student Activities Office, where she has been a beacon of positivity, commitment, and integrity since her first day she earned this position many years ago. Earlier this week, Hayfield held our 2025 Prom for our Cat B Program, a program that Hayfield Secondary is extremely proud of. Mrs. Allan thought that an excellent way to celebrate our wonderful students on their special night, was to roll out the red carpet for them. Mrs. Allan took out our 25-30 foot red carpet, that we use for in-house events, vacuumed it, and set it up for our wonderful students. Our students strutted, and glided their way down red carpet, one their way out for their special event at the Crystal View. Thank you Mrs. Allan for being the caring and considerate person you are, and the champion for each of our Hayfield Student Body!"

Our son has so many examples of positive experiences with Ms. Muscar and how she interacts with the students. He cannot wait to go to school each day to see what they’re going to learn. I really appreciate the level of respect that Susan always gives to her colleagues, students, and parents."
- Lynne Kohls, Flint Hill ES
Amy Williams, Flint Hill ES
"Our school counselor, Amy Williams, needs to be recognized for the level of professionalism that she exemplifies every single day. As you can imagine she is very busy but is always willing to stop what she is doing to help a student or staff member in need. Amy never makes a staff member feel like they are interrupting by asking her to help with a student, or to quickly collaborate about a student, so that the staff member is able to go forth and help the student. Amy empowers her colleagues so that they have the tools to help students, which to me is a real leader. Lastly Amy always checks in later to make sure that the student and staff have solved the issue. Amy is a team player, and I am beyond grateful to be on her team."

Philippe Cloutier & Rich Hronik, Nancy Sprague Technology Center
"I can’t overstate how impressed I am by the work of Rich Hronik and Phil Cloutier to keep the FCPS production truck working when the generator died on-site during the video recording of the 2025 6th Grade All-County Choral Festival. Although we arrived at 9:00 AM and set-up went smoothly, we had nothing in the truck 90 minutes before the event because of our source of power failed. Pivoting and problem-solving, Rich and Phil started plugging in extension cords, from the truck to the school building...lots of them. We needed to borrow from the school and Field Services. Phil then had to drive back to Sprague to get more. The truck was operating, slightly off the batteries of the power supplies. One by one the racks were plugged-in and sprung back to life. Only minutes before the event started, we received audio. I didn't even know it was possible to run the truck off of many, many extension cables. "

Brian Murphy, John Uccellini, Brittany Diggs-McLean & Maria Marenco, Mount Vernon HS
"I am very happy to recognize Brian Murphy, John Uccellini, Brittany Diggs-McLean, Maria Marenco, and the entire Mount Vernon High School custodial staff. This team was instrumental to the preparation, organization, and facilitation of the 2025 6th Grade All-County Choral Festival! This team went above and beyond to ensure Mount Vernon High School was ready to receive 800+ 6th graders for their rehearsal on a Friday in March. They continued going above and beyond to ensure the school was ready to receive 2000+ audience members for the ACCF concert the next day. We appreciate their professionalism, attention to detail, and willingness to help the ACCF team with the set-up and facilitation of this event. Working with these individuals was an absolute joy and made this year's All-County Choral Festival one of the best festivals to date. Thank you, again, Mount Vernon HS, for your support with this event!"
-Jessica Warr, Bonnie Brae ES
Kristine Long, Hayfield Secondary
"Kris Long has taken the lead on beautifying our school campus and bringing back the recycling program that has been absent for years. We now have a beautifully manicured and landscaped garden area right in front of the school where everyone walks by on their way into the school and it just brightens my morning and brings a smile to my face, as I'm sure it does for a lot of other people. I usually bring from my classroom back to my house what I can recycle since we haven't had this program at Hayfield for years and I love to see the kids walking the hallways now collecting all recycling! Yay!! :) Thank you Ms. Long for all your efforts and investment into this program and for leading the way for students to care for their community and environment."
- Elizabeth Auciello Busch, Hayfield Secondary
Michele Cross, Gatehouse Admin Center
"Before I even arrived at Gatehouse, I had heard great things about Michele Cross. Now, after attending several meetings with her, I understand why. Michele has a calm demeanor and doesn't feel the need to speak just for the sake of being heard. Much of what she says is solution-driven and accompanied by thoughtful insights, even if the situation is challenging. I have observed her navigate disagreements effectively; she rarely takes sides. Instead, she influences decisions that benefit both parties, promoting the idea of a single coin—one solution toward a common goal. Despite juggling multiple meetings and sometimes multitasking, her ability to stay engaged in each one is impressive. She provides crucial current and next steps while maintaining a positive attitude, often smiling and expressing gratitude, even in the midst of difficult discussions. It is a joy to be in the same room and witness how smoothly a meeting flows when she imparts her wisdom, solutions, and positive energy. It's great to see that the rumors about her capabilities are true. Great job, Michele Cross!"
- Philip Jeffers, Gatehouse Admin Center
Tiffany Lee, Gatehouse Admin Center
"I would like to recognize Tiffany Lee for her outstanding contributions. It truly amazes me how Tiffany brings a positive attitude to her team and to all her colleagues throughout the day. Her department is on the front line for all things FCPS—whether good or bad—but her demeanor does not reflect the challenges she faces. She consistently shows an ability to adapt to any situation. Recently, I met with Tiffany regarding the new Queue Management system that will be implemented in her department. During our meeting, my laptop began to malfunction due to hardware and network issues. Even though I was supposed to be the subject matter expert on the new system, Tiffany stepped up and took the lead. She began configuring the new system using her skills in design, developing custom forms, and identifying customer solution processes. What I appreciated the most was the exceptional customer service she provided. Tiffany took on a task that would typically be my responsibility, and instead of feeling frustrated, I was grateful for her assistance. I had the opportunity to work with someone I believe is a great example of leadership. Although I have witnessed her exemplary leadership in other situations, it was humbling to be a recipient of the outcomes of her servant leadership. Great job, Tiffany!"

Joe McGuire, Ravensworth ES
"This is a long overdue message—I’ve been meaning to write it for a while now, and I feel remiss for not sending it in sooner. Mr. McGuire absolutely deserves to be recognized, and I couldn’t let the school year go by without making sure someone knows just how much he means to our family. My son is full of energy, endlessly curious, and always eager to ask questions—he definitely keeps people on their toes! But Mr. McGuire meets him exactly where he is, with a kind of love that’s both firm and incredibly caring. It’s the exact balance my son needs, and somehow, Mr. McGuire gets him to shine in it. The way my son talks about him at home—he loves his teacher. He comes home happy, proud of his work, and tells me all about what they did that day. He’s constantly bringing home pages and pages of writing, and honestly, I’m floored every time. I don’t know how Mr. McGuire inspires that kind of focus and output, but he does it with so much heart. What also means so much is that Mr. McGuire stays in touch—he calls or messages with updates, not just when something’s wrong, but to celebrate wins and share progress. That kind of communication and partnership is rare and so appreciated. I just want to make sure he gets the recognition he deserves. Mr. McGuire is a rockstar, and we are beyond grateful for the impact he’s had on our son. Thank you Mr. McGuire for all that you do for my son!

Brian Valentine, West Potomac HS
"Recently the Music department at WPHS embarked on a long trek to Orlando, FL. We had one outstanding staff member that went above and beyond on the trip to make it successful for all students and one in particular. Dr. Brian Valentine, Fine Arts Administrator at West Potomac HS, was that staff member. Dr. Valentine first, volunteered his time to support our department on this trip. Stepping away from many important responsibilities back a school to help our students. Secondly, he saw a need and fulfilled it. Dr. Valentine went above and beyond to help a student in need. As a parent of a child that attend the trip and a member of the fine arts faculty, I was moved by his actions. Every parent worries about their child's well being and safety when they are away. Dr. Valentine took extra care of a student who needed him. He joyfully helped them with every aspect of the trip. Navigating a plan for the student to participate in all activities, be with friends and have a valuable educational experience during our workshop. Dr. valentine did this for the entire trip, not just a few hours, but days. Dr. Valentine is an excellent example of the caring culture here in FCPS. Jordan Bristol, Canterbury Woods ES
"We would like to recognize Mr. Bristol in appreciation of the incredible impact he has had on our son so far this school year. Since the beginning of kindergarten, we have watched our son grow not only academically, but in his confidence and love of learning. What has been especially remarkable is the transformation in his attitude toward math. Before starting kindergarten, he showed very little interest in the subject. Thanks to Mr. Bristol’s positive, encouraging, and energetic teaching style, math has become one of his favorite parts of the day. Mr. Bristol’s classroom is a place where curiosity is celebrated, and effort is recognized. He has created an environment where our son feels both supported and challenged. Because of this, our son now displays a general love of learning. It is clear he feels empowered by what he is learning, and that is a direct reflection of Mr. Bristol’s ability to make learning meaningful and fun. We are so grateful for the way Mr. Bristol has helped our son grow—not just in academics, but in self-confidence, independence, and enthusiasm for school. Jude Welling Barrows, ISAEP East - Graham Rd
"I am writing to express my sincere and profound gratitude for the truly game-changing GED calculator workshop and the incredibly helpful exam cram packet Jude Welling Barrows so thoughtfully created and shared with all of the ISAEP South students. Jude did not only create and share her resources, she also came to ISAEP South early one morning to ensure those students knew how to use the GED approved calculator. To the students you were a miracle worker. Your remarkable ability to break down complex functions into easily understandable steps, the hands-on practice and clear explanations, and the positive feedback you provided during the workshop not only demystified the calculator but also empowered my students with the confidence to use it effectively. Furthermore, the exam cram packet she compiled is an absolute lifesaver. The time and effort Jude took distilling the essential information and practice problems into such a concise and targeted resource has become an invaluable tool in the ISAEP’s curriculum, allowing us to focus on the key concepts and reinforce understanding efficiently."

Sara Hannon, Hayfield Secondary
"Mrs. Sara Hannon is a wonderful supportive teacher, who truly cares about her students, and their feelings. Today, she noticed one of her students, (who normally has a great demeanor,) seemed withdrawn, and emotional. She remained vigilant to her student's behavior and feelings throughout the morning. Later, after lunch Mrs. Hannon again noticed the student, whom was now in my class, seemed to be crying under the cover of studying. Mrs. Hannon knocked on my door, and asked to speak to the student. After speaking with the young lady, Mrs. Hannon asked me to come out into the hall, and she then explained what she was noticing. I truly appreciate teachers like Mrs. Hannon, for they realize they are more than just teachers. They are extra mom's, extra counselors, and extra friends. Mrs. Hannon is very special to Hayfield student body, for this is just one instance of how caring she is on a routine basis. Thank you Mrs. Hannon for your enduring support of our students at Hayfield."

"Mr. Balangue is one of those teachers who just cares. He cares about his school's community, whether it's leading his chorus in a Holiday singing concert at Lake Anne's annual holiday celebration or leading the school's 5th and 6th grade safety patrols so they understand responsibility and learn leadership. All the students look forward to his class and he connects with them easily. Last week Lake Anne ES and Forest Edge had their annual 6th grade basketball game. Despite his full work load teaching music and chorus and managing the patrols, he coordinated with Forest Edge to present a joint chorus to sing the National Anthem. With no rehearsals and just a short warm up, he successfully led a group of children who had never sung together in singing our most cherished song. The students took it seriously and sang with pride. It's because of his leadership and ability to connect with the students that he was able to accomplish this."

This year we officially offered advanced math in grade 3, and Ms. Miller easily agreed to this new initiative, knowing that this was best practice and in the best interest of her students who are ready for an accelerated and compacted curriculum. She is an open and honest contributor during CLT meetings and sets realistic goals for herself and for her students. She has a quiet strength that draws her teammates and students in. Her dedication to teaching math and science is admirable. When visiting her classroom, one can easily tell that she has a passion for teaching and learning. She makes math and science engaging and understandable for all students. More often than not, she can be seen giving small group or individualized instruction, ensuring that her students have access and success with the curriculum."

Skyler Arrington, Mount Eagle ES
"Have you ever seen a duck glide over water? On the surface, they are moving smoothly, and it seems almost effortlessly. Underneath, however, they are paddling furiously. This is what I think of when I see Skyler walking down the hall, sipping an iced coffee. She is moving through our school, cool as a cucumber, but in the background she is accomplishing so much. After our Title I staffing was reduced last year, Skyler took on supporting both math and literacy across our school. She supported teams in unpacking standards in math and learned Benchmark right alongside classroom teachers. She jumped in and co-taught lessons, taking on new learning and risks. She modeled what it is to be a life-long learner and practitioner. When one of her teammates went on parental leave, she jumped in to supporting groups and leading literacy work solo, figuring things out bit by bit, but always keeping supporting teachers and students at the center of her focus. She fully embodies our values of learning together and fostering perseverance. Skyler is the kind of resource teacher that every school deserves. She is committed to the achievement of all students, willing to get messy alongside teachers, and open and honest with her feedback to leadership. I'm so happy to recognize Skyler as this week's Best of the Nest, and our nominee for FCPS Cares."

Shelby Benn, Robinson Secondary
"Mrs. Shelby Benn teaches US History II Honors but she is also MAKING HISTORY for one of our children and by extension, our whole family!! Her kindness and care continues to make a huge positive difference for our daughter. She reaches out to parents and guardians to regularly communicate positive feedback through email and Talking Points. She also ensures that if students have been absent, they know about opportunities to make up work and are personally invited to make a RAISE pass. She takes an interest in students and creates a sense of community in her classrooms! I write this recognition with TWO HATS ON. The first one is my parent hat, since I know Mrs. Benn as my daughter's teacher. The second hat is my FCPS role, where I champion student attendance and engagement throughout FCPS. I am beyond inspired by Mrs. Benn and how she engages with students. This directly impacts students wanting to come to school and feeling more connected and a sense of belonging while in school. Please receive my sincere gratitude! I take my TWO HATS off to you!!"

The documentary was shared with over 200 people, including FCPS teachers, staff, students and community members. Maggie Futato, Justice HS
"Maggie has been such a vital part of the Science Department and the Justice HS Community as a whole. As one of the Socio-Emotional Learning Committee Leads, she creates Advisory Lessons for our staff to share with students every 2nd period. These presentations not only show student and faculty representation through videos (that she sometimes acts in herself!), but they also inform students of current events and engage students in productive conversations. As part of the Biology CT, Maggie has been influential in improving curriculum for her Multilingual Learners, sharing her resources and gathering data for her CT. She has taken her own time to diligently analyze student Benchmark results, cross-referencing them (for what I can only imagine took hours) with state standards. She even informed me of trends in Biology student achievement, as well as considerations in equity for our students. On a more personal note, when I have asked the department for either meeting presenters or to act as Stand-In Department Chair, Maggie never hesitates to volunteer! She has checks in with me and ensures that I am able to do my job smoothly, and I sincerely appreciate her energy, voice, and dedication. Her passion for her not only her Multilingual Learners, but her colleagues truly shows, and we are lucky to have her at Justice!"

Thank you Brittany for all you do!"

Cassidy Rell, Eagle View ES
"One recognition alone could not amount to the honor that Ms. Rell deserves. Ms. Rell serves students with varying exceptionalities within the Comprehensive Services Site at Eagle View Elementary School. Ms. Rell serves some of the most challenging behaviors I have witnessed as en educator and does so with a smile every day. It's hard to believe it's only Ms. Rell's second year teaching as she educates her students with a trauma-informed approach in the most high intensity situations. Ms. Rell starts each day with a fresh start for each individual student and is always seeking ways to improve her instruction and classroom management techniques. While they might always show it, Ms. Rell's students leave her classroom feeling incredibly loved and valued because of the heart she puts into her work. Ms. Rell is EXACTLY the educator students with challenging behaviors need in order to thrive."
- Bianca Rodriguez, Eagle View ES
Joseph Wieland, Lake Braddock Secondary
"This year, our Professional Development was done monthly in cohorts where we were able to select specific areas where we wanted to develop more skills. I was fortunate enough to be in a cohort on Visible Thinking led by Joe Wieland. He did an amazing job of engaging us as adult learners, using multiple modalities for instruction. Joe has great humor, great knowledge, and an ability to change course depending on the group sitting in front of him--hallmarks of a great teacher!! Despite the professional developments often being geared toward classroom teachers (our largest staff population), I appreciate that Joe was able to deliver ideas, strategies, and ways of engaging with students that could easily be applied to my role as a high school counselor. Kudos, Joe. Very much appreciate your knowledge, skill and humor and your respect for us as adult learners.
- Jacquie Naughton, Lake Braddock Secondary
Ryan Northcutt, Woodson IT
"Ryan Northcutt has been amazing to work with. I am the librarian at Woodburn ES, and we recently had new flooring put in the library and offices. Our news room had to be completely dismantled to accommodate this. Ryan came to our school and took down all the equipment and when the flooring was complete, he returned, he not only set up the equipment, he streamlined our set-up, made recommendations to improve our equipment, and even labeled all of the wiring and components. Thank you, Ryan, for all your hard work and support!"

Sarah Tarvid, Fairfax HS
"Reaching out to Sarah Tarvid was my daughter's first experience with Fairfax Academy, and she has made all the difference in my daughter’s Academy experience. As my daughter finalizes her plans to take a third year of Musical Theatre and Actors Studio classes, we are once again grateful for Ms. Tarvid. From day one, she has been a true partner with our daughter and with us to make all the Academy opportunities happen. Two years ago, my daughter heard about visits to Academy classes late in the open visit season, and there was just one date left for a class visit. Ms. Tarvid responded to questions from our daughter and her base school counselor in record time so that our daughter could make the visit and see for herself that MTAS was where she wanted to be. Once at Fairfax Academy, Ms. Tarvid has been a calm and friendly voice on the phone and in emails to answer questions about shuttle buses, driving logistics, attendance, and bell schedules. Whenever I call the office with a question or special attendance situation, I know it’s going to make extra work for someone, and it’s almost always Ms. Tarvid. Each and every time, she is gracious and positive and does whatever it takes to make things work for the students. Ms. Tarvid has helped us with everything from a missed shuttle bus to last-minute dismissal changes to helping us think eight months ahead about logistics when my daughter was requesting her classes for next year. We’re grateful that Ms. Tarvid has been with us every step of the way. Academy students choose to do the extra logistics work of attending two high schools because they are passionate about their Academy subject. Performing arts is what makes my daughter tick, and Ms. Tarvid has literally made it possible for my daughter to learn about and attend MTAS classes with logistics and administrative support day in and day out. We are so grateful that Ms. Tarvid helps orchestrate bringing students from across Fairfax County together to grow and thrive in Fairfax Academy classes. Our kids couldn't do it without her!"

Jason Smolinski, Fairfax HS
" My daughter experienced a tragedy with the sudden loss of a friend. She insisted that she was able to attend school the morning after the tragedy took place. I emailed her counselor who then emailed her teachers. Several reached out to me but none went as far as Mr. Jason Smolinski. He went out of his way to support my daughter. He made sure to be close to her that morning and when the grief and worry overwhelmed her he supported her and made sure she was escorted to the counselor's office. He then followed up with me via email to make sure I knew what had happened that morning. In addition, he has continued to check in with her and keep me updated on her progress not only in class but with how she is dealing with the grief in school. We are lucky to have such a kind teacher in our school system."

Her hard work and dedication make such a positive impact, and I truly appreciate everything she does. Thank you for acknowledging her outstanding performance."

Constance Hall, Virginia Run ES
"Connie Hall is an exceptional FCPS employee. While a new teacher, she seeks to deeply understand her student's needs, implement whatever is best for her student juggling resources, needs and the complexity of a special education classroom. She takes every piece of information, advice, and thought to figure out how to use it to best serve her student's needs. I have seen a student make exceptional progress in her class because she used her resources wisely to set up her student for success."
-Connie Johnson, Virginia Run ES

-Ted Cooper, Fairhill ES
Hugo Olivares, Stonecroft Transportation
"On the evening of April 1, 2025, a miscommunication led to multiple athletic teams left without rides to/from their competition sites. Mr. Olivares was called at home to come out and assist on the return ride home for a softball team by his supervisors and OSS. Mr. Olivares was then called upon by OSS to assist with a second team/location on his way to return his originally assigned group. Mr. Olivares rose to the task without hesitation. Hugo exemplifies the mindset of the "team effort" we should all share as FCPS employees. As a former FCPS Bus Supervisor, I would have appreciated an entire team of drivers just like Hugo. Thank you sir, for your service in assisting Fairfax HS, your supervisors, and OSS."

Beyond academics, Mrs. Ganesh fosters a sense of community, inclusion, and confidence among her students. Max Maxfield, Westfield HS
"I wanted to take a moment to thank the amazing Teacher's at Westfield High School. You are the unsung heroes of our community. There are too many to recognize after 6 years and 3 students attending Westfield. I just wanted to take a moment to thank Mr. Maxfield for making such a huge impact on my daughter. She's so excited to tell me about what she's learned and how she was challenged. She tells me funny stories how Mr. Maxfield is able to keep the kids' attention thru humor and interesting stories. She enjoys challenging him about why there isn't more time spent on a specific area. He's always so thoughtful and listens to her concerns. You can tell that Mr. Maxfield is a great teacher because he truly loves what he's doing. How many of us can say the same? Thank you Mr. Maxfield for making a quiet mouse feel so comfortable in your class. With much respect, we are so grateful!

Allison Starks, Gatehouse Admin Center
"Allison was an amazing partner in supporting the implementation of a survey on a tight timeline. She took the time to share feedback on the survey, provide logistical support, report back on results, answer team questions, and work to shepherd everything through the process. We couldn't have done it without her, and her positive outlook throughout helped make a potentially stressful process much more manageable for all.
