Third Grade
Meet our Third Grade Team
At Annandale Terrace Elementary, your third grader will have a busy and exciting year learning new things in math, reading and writing (language arts), science, and social studies.
In math, your child will become a "data detective." They'll learn how to ask questions, collect information, and show it using pictures and bar graphs. We'll practice reading these graphs and solving simple addition and subtraction problems with them. Your child will also work with big numbersup to six digits, learning to read, write, and understand what each digit means. They'll get really good at adding and subtractingnumbers up to 1,000, and learn when it's okay to guess (estimate) or when an exact answer is needed. This year is also a big one for multiplication and division! We'll use different ways to understand these operations, and your child will work on memorizing multiplication facts up to 10x10. We'll also explore shapes (geometry), fractions(like parts of a whole), and how to measurethings like length, weight, and liquid volume. All of these math skills will be connected to problems they might see in real life!
In language arts, your child will become a stronger reader, writer, and speaker. They'll learn to understand different kinds of stories and articles, focusing on finding the main idea, important details, and figuring out what the author is trying to say. We'll compare different stories and texts, and learn how characters' actions make a story happen. Your child will also become a "word detective," using clues to figure out new words. For writing, they'll practice writing to explain things, share their thoughts, and create their own stories. They'll also learn more about grammar. Students will get lots of chances to talk in class, sharing their ideas and listening to others. In science, your child will be curious about the world around them. They'll learn how to plan and do simple experiments, use technology to explore things, and see how science connects to everyday life. We'll work together on projects, discover new things, and even learn about different jobs that use science! Finally, in social studies, your child will learn about communitiesand what makes them special. They'll discover what it means to be a good citizen, including respecting others and helping their community. A big part of the year will be a fun trip back in time to ancient civilizationslike Egypt, China, Greece, Rome, and the West African Empire of Mali. Your child will learn how these ancient people lived, what amazing things they created, and how their ideas still influence us today.
