Ink in the Marrow is a transfixing dance production that explores the space between the written word and the moving body. Conceived by Meredith Barnes and Fairfax Academy dancers, this show follows the journey of "The Writer"—representing the human impulse to create—as they struggle to transform a blank page into a lived truth.

Through 15 thematic dances inspired by the works of legendary poets like Rumi, Maya Angelou, and Robert Frost, the dancers become the "Ink" that brings poetry to life.

See the ink move, and hear the body speak.

Welcome to the 4th quarter! It's hard to believe the end of the school year is approaching as fast as it is.

I have some events to highlight for you this week, and a little end-of-year operational information to share with you. We're highlighting Fairfax Spotlight on the Arts Opening Night featuring our very own MCT instructor Matt Carlin, and our student Lua Songer-Johnson. We're also looking forward to our Fashion Careers class presenting Fashion in Motion!

And in the business column, we're sharing information about how to make sure your student's Academy attendance is correct is in this email. There's a bit of information specifically for parents of graduating seniors too. The end of the year has lots of testing and other activities that can impact attendance, so this information will help us all keep attendance correct.

We're here to partner with you to finish the year strong. Please reach out anytime if we can support.

In partnership,Mrs. Cook

Academy "Need to Know": End of Year Info

Attendance info for all Academy students

The last day of shuttles is June 5. Attendance will be taken for commuter students through June 5, and for FHS base school students through the end of the year. (A note: Fairfax HS graduation is June 3, and there will be no classes or shuttles on this day.)

Base schools do not send attendance information to the Academies. Testing, field trips, and other absences might result in errors in your Academy attendance – this is true for ALL absences and ALL base schools. Here’s how to make sure your Academy attendance is correct!

Got attendance questions? We’re here to help. Send your attendance questions to Ms. Tarvid in the Academy office: [email protected] or call 703-219-2226.

End of Year Info specifically for Seniors

Academy attendance will be pre-marked for seniors for senior exam days, senior activity dates, and graduation day through the end of the year, based on the schedule published by FCPS for end of year activities. Below you will see the last day of attendance for seniors at each of our base schools. You do not need to report attendance after this date for seniors only.

Cedar Lane: May 18
Chantilly, Fairfax, Falls Church, IAS, Oakton: May 19
Hayfield, West Springfield, Woodson: May 20
South Lakes: May 21
Annandale, Justice, Langley, Marshall: May 22
Madison, McLean, Westfield: May 28
Centreville, Robinson: June 1
Herndon, Lake Braddock: June 2

Are you participating in a senior internship? You need to do two things.

First, you need to coordinate your end of year plans with your Academy teacher. Your senior internship does not exempt you from end of year projects, performances, or testing in your Academy class. You are still required to fulfill your Academy class obligations and commitments. Make arrangements with your Academy teacher to complete these end of year requirements.

Second, you need to report your internship dates to the Academy attendance office in order to have them excused. Please forward your internship approval email showing the dates of your internship to the Academy attendance mailbox: [email protected]

Fairfax Academy Family & Friends,

We are approaching the end of the third quarter! Read on to see the exciting events that have occurred at Fairfax Academy recently - like a masterclass with Silkroad Ensemble, MCT Fest, and MTAS's Signature Showcase! We're also highlighting some upcoming events, in particular our Fashion in Motion show.

On Friday, March 27, we'll have a 2 hour early release countywide. This means we will have AM shuttles only. Midday and PM commuters will be excused in attendance. Please use the links below to report attendance if your AM (2nd period) student is not attending Academy that day.

Enjoy the upcoming break! We'll look forward to seeing our students when we return.

In partnership, Mrs. Cook

Academy Events Recap

George Mason University’s Center for the Arts invited the internationally renowned Silkroad Ensemble to lead a master class in our Music and Computer Technology lab. Students had an intimate setting to learn from and be inspired by their mission: to create music that engages difference, sparking radical cultural collaboration and passion-driven learning for a more hopeful and inclusive world. Thank you for your partnership and dedication to connecting our artists to future career pathways.

MCT Fest was held on Saturday, March 21 and brought down the house! This high-energy celebration of original student work is a great example of the authentic (and FUN) industry and career opportunities offered at Fairfax Academy. Kudos to the musicians, engineers, techs, composers, crew, and Mr. Carlin!

Thank you to our partners at Signature Theatre for supporting our annual Musical Theatre Pre-Professional Showcase! Congrats to all of the performers and to this year’s Signature Theatre Scholarship awarded on Monday evening to Fairfax High School student, Mauro Manganello!

Coming up!

Fashion Careers prepares for Fashion in Motion- the student designed end of year fashion show to be held at the Sherwood Center on Saturday, April 25th at 4pm. Models are needed!

Our Fashion Careers classes recently went on a field trip to prepare. Students sourced materials, toured the processing center, and learned about career opportunities in the field. Thank you to our our partners at Upcycle and Goodwill of Greater Washington!

Save the date! City of Fairfax’s Spotlight on the Arts Festival will host a Community Day on Sunday, May 3rd from 11am - 4pm in Old Town Fairfax. Students can share their work from Academy, perform live onstage, and celebrate their year! Interested performers/artists should reach out directly to their teacher for participation details.

Fairfax Academy Friends and Family,

We hope you enjoyed the recent snow day mixed in with some warm spring-like days. We have a record number of registrations for next year and look forward to continuing to work with current students and celebrating our seniors! If you are interested in coming back next year, please make sure your registration is in by March 6. (More details below.)

Looking towards the end of the year, as those senior schedules and testing calendars roll in, please notify us of any days that your student will not be attending so we can ensure all end of the year requirements are met. You can do that by filling out the pre-arranged absence form or using our online attendance form. Please also notify us immediately if you are doing a senior capstone experience. You are still required to complete Academy final exams/projects.

This quarter is super short, so we hope everyone marches strongly to the end of the 3rd quarter!
