A Note from the Principal

It has been another wonderful week at Liberty! Reflecting on this past week, it was truly uplifting to celebrate Staff Appreciation Week. Our school staff work incredibly hard, and I want to extend a huge thank you to our PTA for collaborating with us to recognize our staff in so many fun and creative ways. Your support makes a world of difference for our team and highlights what a supportive community we have here.

We are now officially in the swing of SOL testing season. I know this time of year can feel a bit busy, but our goal is to keep things as calm and routine as possible for our students. SOL scores will be available for you to view in the Test History tab of ParentVUE. Please keep in mind that these results do not post instantly. It can take several days for the data to process and travel through the system to show up on your end. We appreciate your patience around this.

Thank you for your continued partnership and for sharing your children with us each day. I am grateful to be part of the Liberty community.

The Liberty Ledger

It's Teacher Appreciation Week! Here is a moment of support in Mr. Hanrahan’s classroom, just one example of the care our teachers bring each day.

A Note from the Principal

One of the things I continue to enjoy most about Liberty is spending time in classrooms and seeing your children engaged in their learning. From thoughtful discussions to collaborative work, it’s clear our students are doing meaningful and important work each day.

I encourage you to take a moment this week to ask your child about their experience with PoG PoL (Portrait of a Graduate Presentations of Learning) and what they’ve been working on recently. These conversations are a great way to stay connected to their learning and celebrate their growth.

As I continue getting to know the Liberty community, I’m hoping to hear from more of our families. If you haven’t already, please take a minute to complete the Family Feedback Form . It truly only takes a minute, and your input will directly help shape our priorities and next steps as a school.

Principal Bromberg connects with students while exploring the library’s newest book additions.

A Note from the Principal

Over the past week, my favorite part of being at Liberty has been getting to know your children. I have loved seeing them in classrooms, hearing their conversations in the hallways, and watching the way they bring so much life to this building each day. It doesn’t take long to see that our students are a huge part of what makes Liberty such a special place.

As I continue settling in, I would love to hear about your experience as a Liberty family and how we can continue to support both you and your child. Your perspective will help me better understand what is working well and where we can continue to help every student feel connected, supported, and challenged.

I encourage every family to take a few minutes to complete the Family Feedback Form . Your voice matters and will play an important role in guiding our work moving forward.

LMS Theatre Presents "Game of Tiaras" Performances: Friday, May 8th at 7PM  Saturday, May 9th at 2PM and 7PM  Liberty Middle School Auditorium

When the old king of a magical land decides to split his kingdom between his three daughters— Cinderella, Belle, and the Snow Queen(who is totally original and definitely not from a famous movie)—things go wrong fast. Really, really wrong.

Imagine mixing the crazy plot twists of Game of Thrones with the high drama of a Shakespeare play, then adding a huge dose of comedy. This version of King Lear is a "tragedy," but you’ll be laughing the whole time as the princesses battle for the throne.

In this kingdom, you don't just put on a crown—you fight for it. When you play the Game of Tiaras, you either win... or you're out!

Ticket information coming soon, but mark your calendars and join us for a fun evening of Liberty Theatre!

We are excited to announce that our school is now using the new Raptor Visitor Management System (VMS).This upgrade is part of our school’s and FCPS’ ongoing commitment to enhancing school safety and streamlining the process for visitors at our school. The VMS ensures that no visitor is on the sex offender registry.

For most visitors, the user experience will be the same when you check-in at the front office.

But now there is also an app, which can make check-in’s even faster at school. Visitors who choose to download the RaptorSafe App and create a Raptor Passport can pre-verify their information before they get to school. The app will give you a QR code you can use when you check-in at school.

If you have questions or need assistance with the new system, please contact our front office. Thank you for your partnership in keeping our schools safe!

Happy Spring Break Liberty Offices will not be open during Spring Break.  They will reopen on Tuesday, April 7th.  Wishing you a peaceful and warm Spring Break! SOL Testing

Students in grades 3-8 participate in state assessments each year. State assessments measure how students are learning grade level standards. Format and timing of state assessments vary by subject and grade level. See the table below. Test formats include:

  • Standards of Learning (SOL) mathematics, science, and reading standardized tests with an integrated reading and writing (IRW) component;
  • Ongoing local alternative assessments (LAAs) completed as part of classroom instruction in science and social studies;
  • Growth assessments completed as part of classroom instruction using the Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) for mathematics and iReady for reading.

More information about these assessments can be found on the webpage: SOL Tests in Elementary and Middle Schools ( https://www.fcps.edu/node/42716 ). The Grade Level Tests webpage ( https://www.fcps.edu/node/50045 ) outlines the division testing schedule for required assessments at each grade. School staff will contact you with the specific dates your student is scheduled to take spring SOL tests.

The state allows elementary and middle school students who fail a spring SOL test to have another attempt before the end of the school year. Retests are not offered for the integrated reading and writing (IRW) component. Parent/guardian permission is required for the school to retest any student in grades 3-8. A decision not to allow retesting will not impact your student’s course grade or academic record.

If you believe your student would benefit from a second opportunity to demonstrate knowledge and skills on the spring SOL test, submit your decision using the Parent Digital Consent application ( https://www.fcps.edu/family-resources/technology/digital-resources/consent ). This application uses your SIS ParentVUE login. If you don’t have a SIS ParentVUE Account, you may complete and return the form below to the school to give permission for retesting.

If you have questions about state assessments or about SOL retesting, contact your student’s teacher or the school test coordinator.

SOL Parent/Guardian Permission to Retest Form (for Parents without a SIS ParentVUE Account)

Parent/guardian permission is required for the school to retest any student in grades 3-8. If you believe your student would benefit from a second opportunity to demonstrate knowledge and skills on the spring SOL test, complete this permission form and return it to your student’s teacher or the school test coordinator. Please return a separate form for each student in grades 3-8.

Student Name ______________________________FCPS ID #________________ Grade Level ________

Parent’s/Guardian’s Name (Printed) _____________________________________________________________________

Parent’s/Guardian’s Signature ______________________________________________________ Date _______________

SOL Testing:

Students in grades 3-8 participate in state assessments each year. State assessments measure how students are learning grade level standards. Format and timing of state assessments vary by subject and grade level. See the table below. Test formats include:

  • Standards of Learning (SOL) mathematics, science, and reading standardized tests with an integrated reading and writing (IRW) component;
  • Ongoing local alternative assessments (LAAs) completed as part of classroom instruction in science and social studies;

Students in grades 3-8 participate in state assessments each year. State assessments measure how students are learning grade level standards. Format and timing of state assessments vary by subject and grade level. See the table below. Test formats include:

  • Standards of Learning (SOL) mathematics, science, and reading standardized tests with an integrated reading and writing (IRW) component;
  • Ongoing local alternative assessments (LAAs) completed as part of classroom instruction in science and social studies;

 _____ No, do not retest my student even if their first attempt is close to a 400 passing score.

 _____ Yes, provide my student with the opportunity to retake any spring SOL tests if they fail the first attempt.

 _____ Yes, provide my student with the opportunity to retake only the following spring SOL test(s) if they fail the first attempt  (see table above for SOL subjects tested at your student’s grade level):

WIDA Testing:

Liberty Middle Families,

All students identified as multilingual learners (MLs) are assessed annually to monitor their progress and proficiency in English as required by the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA). In Virginia, all divisions use the WIDA ACCESS for this purpose.

The WIDA ACCESS is aligned with the WIDA English Language Development standards and assesses English in the four language domains of listening, speaking, reading, and writing. The assessment will:

  • Determine students’ English language proficiency level and eligibility for ESOL services and testing accommodations.
  •  Help students and families understand students’ current level of English language proficiency along a developmental continuum.
  • Provide teachers with information they can use to plan for and support student learning.
  • Determine whether MLs have met English language proficiency criteria and exit ESOL services.

All MLs, including those who have opted out of ESOL services, participate annually in the ELP assessment until they reach English language proficiency criteria (ELP level 6). Alternate assessment formats are available for certain students with disabilities.

If you have questions about the annual ELP assessment, please contact the school’s test coordinator for more information.
