Thirty-Nine Steps (John Buchan)OBW4 YL3.8 語数17236<Introduction>'I turned on the light, but there was nobody there. Then I saw something in the corner that made my blood turn cold. Scudder was lying on his back. There was a long knife through his heart, pinning him to the floor.Soon Richard Hannay is running for his life across the hills of Scotland. The police are chasing him for a murder he did not do, and another, more dangerous enemy is chasing him as well- the mysterious 'Black Stone'. Who are these people? And why do they want Hannay dead?9月になって調子よく進んでいた多読ですが、多読基本4Aセットの最後の1冊になって、途端にペースダウンになってしまいました。

Mr Midshipman Hornblower (C.S.Forester)OBW4 YL3.8 語数13,000<Introduction>"Hornblower fired. There was a small cloud of smoke, but no bang. This is death, he thought. My pistol was the unloaded one."But Horatio Hornblower does not die. He survives the duel with Simpson, learns to overcome his seasickness, and goes on to risk his life many times over. It is 1793, Britain is at war with France, and life on a sailing ship of war is hard and dangerous. But the hardest battles are fought by Hornblower within himself.

16,000<Introduction>When William, Susie, and Martha cook a witch's brew in the old barn, they don't really expect anything to happen. Witches are just superstition, William says. Nobody believes in them today. But there are stories in the village that the barn was once a witch's home. And then the children see old Miss Hepplewhite standing in the doorway. She tells them that there is a witch. Her name is Morgan le Fay, and she comes from a much older time, when knights rode into battle on horseback, and everybody believed in witches. "There has been no sign of her for many, many years," Miss Hepplewhite says. "But she's always here somewhere. She's the bad side of things, you see."A cool wind has begun to blow, and in the shadowy places in the barn there are strange little noises. The three children, even calm, sensible Susie, suddenly feel very cold, icy cold....

16,000<Introduction>In the quite villages of England in the early nineteenth century, life follows an unchanging pattern. The seasons come and go, for both the rich Swuire and his family in the big house, and the villagers in their little cottages. Anything new or strange is met with suspicion in villages like Raveloe. And Silas Marner the linen-weaver is strange. He lives alone, and no one knows a anything about his family. How can you trust a man when you don't know his mother and father? And he is pale, with strange, staring eyes, for he works long hours at his loom every day - even on Sundays, when he should be in church. He must be a friend of the devil, the villagers say to each other.Poor Silas! He's a sad, lonely man, and his only friends are the bright gold coins that he earns for his weaving and keeps hidden under the floorboards. But change must come, even to a quiet place like Raveloe. The Squire's two sons share a secret, which leads to quarrelling, robbery, and a death, one cold snowy night not far from the door of Silas's cottage....久しぶりに読んだOBW(Oxford Bookworms)です。 巻末にはweave....to make coloth using loom なるごど、じゃloomは?...What???loom.....a machine for weaving cloth ふんふん、そっか…linen....a special kind of cloth (more like cotton than wool) リネンて聞くよね~そして物語の後半になって、adopt....to take another person's child into your family to become your own child意味がわかるとやはり物語の理解が深まる気がします。

16,000<Introduction>A fast-moving international thriller set in Scandinavia, London and southern Africa. A politician nearly dies in Stockholm, and secret agent Monika Lundgren chases the would-be killer. As she races across the world she meets a strange football team, a rock musician, and a madman with dreams of world power. 多読基本セットは、OBW(Oxford Bookworms)や、PGR(Penguin Readers)の本が多いのですが、時々CER(Cambridge English Readers)も入っています。

Two Lives (Helen Naylor)CER3 YL3.6 語数15,000<Introduction>In the small Welsh villege of Tredonald, Megan and Huw fall in love. But is their love strong enough to last? Death, their familes and the passing years are all against them.

A Puzzle for Logan (Richard MacAndrew)CER3 YL3.6 語数16,000<Introduction>"Someone's found ayoung woman's body in Holyrood Park. We're wanted over there immediately.""Today was my day off", said Logan."Not any longer", replied Grant.Did an escaped murderer kill the woman? Or was it somebody else? Can Logan find the answer to the puzzle?

They go to Itary and stay at Stephany's friend Carlo's flat in a Mediterranean village. But Carlo's wife is not very happy to see Stephany - and the two couples find out why, and a lot of other things about each other, in a hot Italian summer.

Rogue Trader(Nick Leeson)PGR3 YL3.4 語数13,000<Introduction>In the last half hour of trading, the market fell again. I went on to the floor and bought another 1,000 futures. Then the market closed. I walked off the trading floor and smiled at the other traders. I had to escape. I didn't know how. I just knew that I couldn't sleep another night in Singapore.4月、5月と調子よくGRの本を読み進めていたのに、この本に入った途端、進まなくなってしまいました。

The Snow Goose and Other Stories (Paul Gallico)PGR3 YL3.4 語数12,000<Introduction>'The Snow Goose'is the most famous of these three stories by Paul Gallico. It is the story of Philip, a lonely painter who lives in an old lighthouse, and Fritha,a young girl who brings him a large white bird- the snow goose. It becomes a special bird in Philip's life- and later, the girl becomes special too.表題の「The Snow Goose」のほか、「The Doll」と「The Silver Swans」の話が収められています。

The story of Rafael and his gold ring is a story of murder, mystery and love. Many people know part of the story, but only Rafael knows what really happened. And Rafael is mad.

This is the story of three otters that Maxwell looks after: first Chahala, then Mijbil and finally Edal. He tells us about both the trouble and the enjoyment that these unusual animals give him, and about the beautiful natural world round Camusfearna, Maxwell's Scottish home.

It sailed from Havana, the capital of Cuba on 28 June 1839. It was taking some young Africans to work as slaves, but they fought and killed the sailors on the ship. The Africans tried to sail the ship home to Africa but a US ship found them and took to New Haven in Connecticut on the north-east coast of America. There they faced prison and the courts.

The detective, of course, was the great Sherlock Holmes- but why was the report kept hidden for so long? This is the story that Arthur Conan Doyle never wrote. It is a strange and frightening tale...

There could be a huge tidal wave from the sea, which will drown the capital city of St Pierre. Mabel will destroy houses, farms, roads, bridges...Only one man, David Wyatt, believes that Mabel will hit San Fernandez, but nobody will listen to him...

They take him travelling on the wings of the night to see the shadows of Christmas past, present, and future - and Scrooge learns a lesson that he will never forget.

Kidnapped(Robert Louis Stevenson)OBW3 YL3.4 語数13,000<あらすじ>'I ran to the side of the ship."Help, help! Murder!" I screamed, and my uncle slowly turned to look at me. I did not see any more. Already strong hands were pulling me away. Then something hit my head; I saw a great flash of fire, and fell to the ground...'And so begin David Balfour's adventures. He is kidnapped, taken to sea, and meets many dangers. He also meets a friend, Alan Breck. But Alan is danger himself,on the run from the English army across the wind Highlands of Scotland...

What can give Alan Cole his leg badk, or give life back to people who have been blown to pieces by a bomb?

'How wonderful!' the children said. But wishes are difficult things. They can get you into trouble...

And when Mr. Conway starts to build his houses, he makes the terrible mistake of disturbing the sleep of the dead...

The Murders in the Rue Morgue (Edgar Allan Poe)OBW2 YL2.6 語数7,010 (総数約877,000)<あらすじ>The room was on the fourth floor, and the door was locked -with the key on the inside. THe windows were closed and fastened- on the inside. The chimney was too narrow for a cat to get through. So how did the murederer escape? And whose were the two angry voices heard by the neighbours as they ran up the stairs? Nobody in Paris could find any answers to this mystery.Except Auguste Dupin, who could see further and think more clearly than other people. The answers to the mystery were all there, but only a clever man coule see them.

The Piano (Rosemary Border)OBW2 YL2.6 語数7,000 (通算約870,000)<あらすじ>One day, a farmer tells a farm boy to take everything out of an old building and throw it away. It's all rubbish, he says.In the middle of all the rubbish, the boy finds a beautiful old piano. He has never played before, but now, when his fingers touch the piano, he begins to play. He closes his eyes and the music comes to him- and the music moves his finers. When he opens his eyes again, he knows that his life is changed for ever...

And he is right to be afraid, because Count Dracula is one of the Un-Dead - a vampire that drinks the blood of living people...

Agathe Christie, Woman of Mystery(John Escott)OBW2 YL2.6 語数5,960 (通算約849,000)<あらすじ>What does the name'Agatha Christie' mean? To many people, it means a book about a murder mystery-a 'whodunnit'.'I'm reading an Agatha Christie,' people say. 'I'm not sure who the murderer is-I think it's ...' But they are usually wrong, because it is not easy to guess the murderer's name before the end of the book. But who was Agathe Christie? What was she like? Was her life quiet and unexciting, or was it full of interest and adventyure? Was there a mystery in her life, too?

A Picture to Remember (Sarah Scott- Malden) CER2 YL2.6 語数9,876<あらすじ>Cristina Rinaldi works works for the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes in Buenos Aires. She loves art and is happy with her life. Then one day she has a motorbike accident and can't remember some things. But there are two men who think she remembers too much, and they want to kill her before she tells the police what she saw.初めのほうに書いてある"she saw a tattoo of a flower, a red poppy, on his neck."
