Kay is on the way to Seattle

Amy and I dropped Kay off at JFK. She checked in at home before left home, yet she had to get on the verylong line for check in her luggage. She wanted to fly with Jet blue which people talking about how good theirplanes are. So far I'm not so impressed. Kay's Friday night flight was canceled 6 hours before her scheduledeparture and tonight's flight was delayed.So, she will, hopefully, arrive to Seattle 12:35AM.(Well she got to Jenny's place at 2:30AM.) Amy drove to JFK today. She was not happy driving at traffic jams that was not too bad for drivingin NY triboro. She says she doesn't have to drive highway in LA after she moves to there. She plans to rent the place close to her work and ride her bike tocommute. It will be good not driving a car unnecessary. Save $$ and it would be good for Earth. Besides, LA is ranked top 3 among the worst traffic cities. You don't want to spend your extra time on the road, you rather be at the　beach. By the way, I love my new phone. I can access to my emails(Yahoo, Hotmail and Gmail) and Web. I can take pictures and send to phone# and or email address. Only problem I have is I cannot make Font size bigger. I can change Font size on "Text Message", but not on other applications. I made a shopping list on "Memo", but I cannot read them at the store. シアトルのジェニーを訪ねるケイをJFK空港まで送っていきました。評判の良いジェットブルーですが、出発６時間前に予定の便がキャンセルされ今日の便も３０分の遅れ。(シアトルに深夜１２:４０分着）ウェッブで既にチェックインしているのにもかかわらず　空港で荷物のチェックインの為にカウンターで長蛇の列。空港の往復はエミが運転。いつも並みの渋滞だったのですがエミはご機嫌斜め。渋滞では全米でトップ３と言われるロサンジェルスに引越し後は通勤に悪渋滞のハイウェイーを避けるために会社の近くにアパートか家を借りる予定。自転車で通勤する予定みたいです。私のPlamスマートフォン、良いですよ～。使わないと思っていた機能もやはり有れば便利。ファイルのダウンロードやワード、エクセルは未だ使っていません。携帯用のメールアドレスだけでなくGmail,YahooMail,HOTMAIL等のメールアカウントを同時に管理できるのも良いですね。タッチスクリーンに慣れたらタッチスクリーンなしでは不便に感じます。PC使用中についついスクリーンをタッチしてしまう今日此の頃です。エミのTreoは私のCentroよりワンランク上なのですがWindowを使用している為に問題が多いようです。

Montreal

The weather was not so good last weekend for traveling. We had heavy rain going to Montreal and a storm when coming back to NY.(Lisa had a black out when she got back to her home.)However, we are grateful it didn't rain when we were sightseeing inside Montreal. It should be five hour drive to Montreal from our house, but we had to spend more than 45 minutes waiting at the long line at the custom. We always manage to pick the slowest line. We picked the shortest line but as soon as we got on the line slowed down dramatically. Despite of the bad weather, we had a quality family time in Montreal. We stayed at Le Square Phillips Hotel & Suites which is TripAdvisor’s #1 choice hotel in Montreal.Their rooms are huge with 12’ ceiling and the price is reasonable. The location is unbeatable. It is so close to all the attractions. It is one block away from rue Sainte-Catherine. We can walk to Old Montreal. The rooftop indoor pool and deck area was nice. (Kids thought the pool was too small, but it is typical city hotel poolsize.) Best of all, this is a dog-friendly Hotel. There is very minor negative point: breakfast was not impressive. Our next room guests were noisy and up to 3AM. (That was not the hotel’s fault, though.)Credit does go the hotel for putting an end to the end fairly quickly. Anyway, the hotel was booked solid. I think TripAdvisor’s reviews helped this hotel’s popularity. I thought Montreal is a dog friendly city. However, we couldn’t find a single restaurant that would accept dogs.Dogs are not allowed on restaurant properties by law. We couldn’t leave our dogs at the hotel by themselves. Duchess has Separation Anxiety, and Duke barks at any loud noise. We have to train them before we take another trip with our dogs. Old Montreal is fun for strolling around. We loved the Art galleries. We could spend a whole day gallery hopping. Many street performers and portrait painters were on the street, butnone of them are outstanding. Chinatown is very small, but cleaner than NYC Chinatown. John likes Toronto Chinatown the best. It’s huge and reminds him of old Hong Kong. Many friends told us to visit Mount Royal (French: Mont Royal) to see the best view of Montreal. Mont Royal Park was designed by Frederick Law Olmsted, who also designed New York's Central Park. The view was somewhat disappointed. Girls and I love the view in Santorini Island in Greece: blue sky, blue sea, Islands and mountains. That was a beautiful picturestic view. I think we are not city people, we are resort people.　　　　　　　　　　　　SIDE　SHOW　(almost 6 minutes) モントリオールから戻ってきました。行きも帰りも大雨。雨女のケイが一緒だったのですよね。(モントリオールから戻った日、リサのアパート付近は停電でした。）雨の中の運転は疲れます。通関で４５分以上も待たされたので疲労過剰。何故か遅い列を選んでしまうのが不思議。今回も最短の列を選んだ筈なのに私達の車が並んだ途端にノロノロ。今回のホテルは旅行口コミサイトで一番人気のホテル。立地条件が最高で部屋も広くて良かったです。屋上には室内プールとデッキがあって、何よりもドッグフレンドリーのホテルなのですよね。朝食が物足りないのが唯一の欠点かしら？ホテルの責任ではないのですが隣の部屋の客が夜中の３時まで煩かったのも欠点。(苦情を入れたら即対応してくれました。）モントリオールはドッグフレンドリーの都市だと思っていたのですが犬連れで食事が出来るレストランを探してやっと見つかったのがパブレストラン。Duchが分離不安になってホテルの部屋に置いておく事が出来ず困りました。次回の旅行までに分離不安症を治しておかなければいけませんね。オールドモントリオールは散歩に最適の地域です。アートギャラリーが並ぶ通りは私達のお気に入り。ギャラリー巡りで一日が過ごせます。勿論犬連れでは交替で犬番。ジョンは犬達を餌に若い娘さんたちとお喋りを楽しんだようです。大道芸人や似顔絵描きが多くいましたがどれもイマイチ。チャイナタウンはニューヨークと比べ物にならないほど小規模ですが清潔です。此処で有名なドラゴンのヒゲというお菓子は甘くて一口食べたら充分でした。モン・ロワイヤル公園の見晴台からモントリオールの絶景が見れると友人達に勧められて行ってきました。この公園はニューヨークのセントラル・パークをデザインしたアメリカ人造園技師フレドリック・オムステッドの設計として有名です。見晴台からの景色は・・・・残念ながら大した事はなかったです。ギリシャのサントリーニ島からの景色の方が数倍良かったです。青空,青い海、遠方に島々、山、崖・・・絵に描いたような景色。(サントリーニの報告、今週末までにアップしますね。）シティーの景色よりリゾート地の景色の方が私達の好みに合っているようです。

New phones

It's time to get new cellphones.Kay and I got Palm Centro and Lisa and Amy got Palm Treo.We are so lucky having small fingers.Centro's manual is 133 pages thick.Yet, they don't teach me how to type "_".Sprint transfered my call to three support operators.One told me to "hold Shift key and press F"... It's for Capital "F".The other said "hold Alt key"... beep, beep beep.The third operator finally said "I will transfer your call to Palm support."Palm support wanted my cell phone number, phone information and email address, before teach me how to type "_".Hold the Option and press S, and then press Alt.Pick the "_" from the pull down menu. "Do I have to use three fingers?" (John was giggling behind me.)Next time create new email address, I won't use "_". Who is a nutty dog??I'm not nutty, I'm little nosy. 新しい携帯電話を買いました。私とケイはPalmの一番安い機種。リサとエミは最新の一番高い機種。今回からは携帯もサービスもそれぞれ娘達の自己負担にしました。サービスは個々で契約するより家族プランの方が安上がりなので二年間の家族プランにしました。以前は携帯にあまりお金をかけるのは感心しないと思っていました。でも　最近の携帯、Web検索も出来るし色々な機能が付いていて凄いですね。スマートフォンの初心者向けと言われる私のPalm　Centroでも　説明書が１３３ページもあるので一日がかりで勉強しました。さて私のメールアドレスに付いている”＿”の記号をどのようにタイプするのかが判らなくて携帯のサポートに電話をしました。３人のオペレーターもお手上げ。やっとPalm専門のサポート部に電話を回してくれて解決したのですがかなり面倒なのです。｢指三本使ってタイプするのですか？」という私の声にジョンはクスクス後ろで笑っていたのですよ～。明日からカナダのモントリオールに行ってきます。

Minnewaska State Park

45 minutes drive from our house.It's near Lake Mohonk Mountain House.We enjoyed pristine mountain scenery and blue berries. 我が家から４５分ほどの所にある州立パーク,ミネワスカ公園に行ってきました。我が家の近くには州立公園が幾つかあります。野生のブルベリーをDuchとIndyは大喜びで食べていました。(私達も沢山食べました。）自然のままの山の風景を楽しみながらのハイキングは気持ちが良かったです。

Darkling Beetle and mealworm

We found a Darkling Beetle in the front of our house.The mealworm is not a worm; it is a larva. Each female lays about 275 eggs which means more likely we have at least 275 mealworms.Yellow mealworm larvae are known as "golden grubs" and make excellent fish bait. (Mike, do you want some?)  The Darkling beetles and their larvae are first class recyclers of organic material; they feed on organic matter that is decaying. In Mexico, certain beetle larvae are served with rice and others are in bottle of the Mexican liquor, mescal. Treat yourself or a friend to a Mexican delicacy.    この昆虫、ゴミムシダマシと日本では呼ばれているのでしょうか？貯穀害虫らしいですね。我が家の前庭で見つけました。メスは２７５個も産卵するという事なので我が家の庭には少なくても２７５のミールワームやゴミムシが生存しているのでしょうね。 メキシコではミールワームはお酒の瓶に漬けたり料理して食べます。(メキシコ人はこれを見て｢美味しそう～｣と涎を垂らすのでしょうね。） アメリカではミールワームは釣りの餌として使われたりしているようです。Amazonのサイトでメキシコ産の蒸留酒テキーラ風味ミールワーム入りローリーポップが売られています。ハロウィーンのキャンディーとして最適かもしれませんが食べたらお腹が痛くなりそうですね。 

Kay's graduation

Lisa and Amy came home to celebrate Kay's graduation last weekend.Slide  show (1:24)Every students only got three thicket for the Graduation ceremony.Kay managed to get one extra ticket, so her sisters could all attend.It started 6PM and it was long.Lucky there was a concession stand; Amy and Lisa had hot dogs and pretzels. (nervous eating??)Our last baby is getting ready to leave the nest.There is a mix of emotions, ranging from joy to sadness over her departure. I think Kay is happy leaving home and being by herself.Oh well... she already starts enjoying her new freedom.So far, Kay spends every weekend partying this summer!!! ケイの卒業式が先週の日曜日に行われました。７０人が落第しても７０４人もの卒業生がいるので一人に付き会場に入れるチケットは３枚だけ。ケイは友人から一枚譲り受けたのでリサとエミも参加出来ました。一人一人卒業証書を校長から受け取るので式は長かったです。６時に始まって会場を去ったのは９時過ぎ。幸いに会場に売店があったのでリサとエミはホットドック等を食べて空腹をしのぎました。(良く食べるのですよ～～｡)最後の娘が巣から旅立っていきます。喜びと悲しみが混じった複雑な心境です。ケイは既に《自由》をエンジョイしていて毎週末はパーティーに出かけています。

ミコノス

アテネからミコノスまではフェリーで行きました。このフェリー, 大型で内装も豪華でエコノミーの指定席でしたが四人がけのテーブル席で快適でした。これでエーゲ海のクルーズ気分を味わえる筈でしたがエミと私は乗り物酔い止めの薬を大量に飲んでいたので4時間ぐっすり寝てしまいました。一人起きていたリサが島々に寄港する度にデッキに出て風景を楽しんだようです。（でも船からの景色はどの島も似ていたらしいです。）港から任天堂のゲームそのままのような乱暴な運転をするタクシーに乗ってホテルまで行きました。クネクネ湾曲した狭い道をスピードを落とすことなく運転するのですよ。道を外したら｢ゲーム終了｣？？？？　恐ろしいですよ。私たちのホテルは海岸沿いにあるコスモプラザでした。この海岸は世界でも有数の美しい海岸だと言われています。コスモプラザはアテネのホテル同様四つ星ランクでしたがアメリカで言うモテール、二つ星プラスと言う感じです。狭くて質素です。でも部屋もロビーも清潔で　海を見ながらの食事は素敵です。このホテルも部屋代は朝食込み。朝食は種類も少なくイマイチでしたがこのホテルのレストランのランチとディナーは値段もリーズナブルで美味しいらしいです。私たちはホテルで朝食を食べて町で昼･夕食を食べました。このホテルのマネージャーが面白い人で｢日本の文化と言語が大好きで、朝昼晩と日本のミュージックを聴いている」日本オタク。日本人と接する事が少ないと嘆いていたので娘達は私が誘拐されるのではと心配していました。彼の話し方はどちらかというとモノトーン,でも表情豊か。間の取り方が絶妙で面白すぎです。英国のコメディーを見ているような気分になります。ミコノスの名物男ではないでしょうか？ホテルから町まではバスで20分ほど。バスは定刻に出発。ハワイのような観光地の時間にルーズな習慣はないようです。バスを利用するには早めにバス停で並ばないと座れません。バスはギュウギュウ詰めになるまで人を乗せます。観光シーズンの真夏にバス停で並んで待つのはチョッと辛いでしょうね。やはり5月末の旅行は一番良い時期だったと思います。 ミコノスの町は白い建物と狭い迷路のような道で出来ています。海岸沿いはレストラン、迷路の中にブティックや土産物屋が並んでいます。街中にも小さなホテルがあるのですが夜中パーティーをする若者たちで賑やかになるのでお薦めはできません。ミコノスではインターネットカフェのオーナーのお薦めのギリシャ料理レストラン「ニコ」で食事をしました。食べ物は新鮮な海鮮類が豊富で美味しかったです。私の大好物のウニは一つ15ユーロと言う事で食べませんでした。子供たちが港でウニを獲っていましたが一つ幾らでレストランに売るのでしょうかね？Gyro(ヒーロと発音；｢ヒ」と｢イ」の中間音かな？）はローストした肉のピタパンのサンドイッチはフライドポテトまで一緒にラップされていて娘達のお気に入り。歩き疲れた時にはアイスクリームを食べてゆっくりするのが最高です。コウノトリも散歩していました。エーゲ海の島々の中でもゲイが多いのがミコノスらしいです。男性の二人連れが多かったです。サンフランシスコから来ていたゲイカップルがサントリーニの情報を色々教えてくれました。地元の人もフレンドリーだったけど観光客もフレンドリーでしたよ。ミコノスの町はこじんまりしていますが迷路の所為で旅行者には大きく感じます。迷子になりやすいのですよね。海賊から街を守る為に入り込んだ迷路を作ったそうです。白い建物に統一したのも海賊の目を眩ませるためだったそうです。何処もかしこも似たような建物に路地。行き止まりだと思ったら通り抜けれる道があったり、私たちは三日目で如何にか町の概要が判ってきました。ミコノスに一軒だけギリシャハニー専門店が在ります。ミコノス第一日目にこの店を見つけました。二日目の朝この店を通りかかった時｢今晩ホテルに帰る前に蜂蜜をジョンのお土産に買って帰ろう」と決めました。(重たい瓶を持って街中を歩き回るのは賢明ではないと思ったのです｡)日中何回かこの店を通り過ぎたのですが、さてこの店に寄ってから最終のバスに乗ろうとしたら、見つからないのです。グルグル迷子になって・・・・ショップの前で夕涼みをしながらお喋りをしている人達に道を聞いてやっと辿り着いたらお店が閉まっていました。三日目は午前中はホテルのビーチで過ごしてサントリーニ島に出立します。ジョンにギリシャの蜂蜜は喜んでもらえると思ったのに・・・トボトボと歩いていた私たちを見て心配した人たちが寄って来て｢ハニーショップが見つからなかったの？」｢閉まっていたの・・・」｢そんな筈は無い。10時前に店を閉めることはないよ。」と、一緒にハニーショップまで行ってくれました。店内の照明は煌煌としているし、ドアの前に置いた飾り物も店内に仕舞っていません。でも閉まっているドアは　15分ほど待っても開きません。ハニーショップのオーナーは何処に出かけたのか戻ってきません。バスに乗り遅れるわけには行かない私たちは、一緒にハニーショップ前で付き合ってくれていたブティックのオーナーに教えてもらった近道を駆け足でバス停まで行きました。(15分間、彼の店は無人状態だったのですよ。）どうにかバスには間に合いましたがギュウギュウ詰め。三日目、サントリーニに出立する前に荷物を持って再度ハニーショップに行きました。(荷物を持ってバスに乗って･･･街中を歩いて･･･港まで行ったのです。)オーナーが昨晩のエピソードを知っていました。ミコノスは人情味のあるのんびりした良い町。ハワイよりミコノスのほうが私のお気に入りです。でもミコノスの不動産はハワイ並みで私たちには購入できないほどの高額。ヨーロッパの金持ちの別荘地だそうです。(島の端のボロ家でも私は満足なのですが･･･）スライドショー

One fine day

Mykonos

We took a ferry to Mykonos from Athens. The ferry was big and very comfortable. Supposedly the view of Aegean Sea is beautiful. However, Amy and I took many motion sickness pills and slept through the entire ride. Lisa was surprised how Amy and I could sleep in awkward positions for four hours. Lisa said all the islands on Aegean Sea look alike from the ferry; whileAmy and I were sleeping she took pictures of the islands for us. Our hotel, Kosmoplaz, was situated at the beach. To get to the hotel we had to go all the way up from where the ferry came in, up a winding mountain road. The drivers in Mykonos were very scary! They drove like they were playing video games. It was a four stars hotel, but more like a motel in USA. However, it was very clean everywhere. The rooms were small and furniture is very simple. There was no bath tub, only shower. We enjoyed the ocean view at the breakfast table. And there was a receptionist named Dimitris. He was a real character and one of our favorite parts of the Greek trip. He said he is fascinated by Japanese language, and he listens to Japanese music in the morning, afternoon and night. He was “so sorry to tell “us that many things we didn't know, but heassured that “everything will be okay.” It was a 20 minute bus ride from Kosmoplaz hotel to town of Mykonos. The bus comes on time. There is no “island time” like Hawaii. If you want to get a seat, you have to be at the bus stop 15 minutesearlier for the waiting line. The food in Mykonos was great and cheaper than in Athens. We liked Gyros: meat roasted on a vertically turning spit and served with tzatziki and tomato, onions and French fries wrapped in pita bread. It is fast food in Mykonos. We didn’t eat sea urchins in Greece. Sea urchins are my favorite food in Japan. We saw little boys picking sea urchins at Mykonos beach. They sell them to restaurants. I don’t know how much they sell them for, but at the restaurant they are very expensive; about 15 Euro each. We loved Mykonos. It is a cute town with white buildings set up like a maze; it was designed to trick pirates. People are friendly and laid back. I would love to live there, but the housing prices are just as high as in　Hawaii. I pick Mykonos over Hawaii, though. We bought Greek honey in Mykonos for John. We had a taste test at the honey shop on our first day at Mykonos. I wanted to buy a honey jar on next night before we got back to hotel, so we didn’t have to carry a heavy jar around the town. We got lost 30 minutes before the last bus left the town to hotel. We couldn’t find the honey shop. During the day, we passed that shop a few times; however, when we were looking for it, we couldn’t find it. The people who worked at all the shops were chatting while sitting outside their stores. They were friendly and gave us directions to the honey shop. There is only one honey shop in Mykonos. To our surprise, the honey shop was closed. We must look very sad walking back to the bus stop. The people saw us and asked “Can’t find the store?” They were so concerned and they were also surprised that the honey shop was closed before 10 PM. Anyway, they taught us the easy way back to the bus stop and we didn’t miss the bus. The next morning, just before leaving to Santorini, we went back to the Honey shop and bought a jar. We had all of our luggage with us when we went to the store. The honey shop owner knew that we were there last night. Mykonos has a comfortable atmosphere of small town.Slide show (4:22)
