Poor Duchess

可哀想なDuchの動画です。Dukeと私に虐められてもじっと耐えていますね。Poor Duchess; Side show  Side show Duchess wolfs down her food.I put a tinny cup into her bowl.It seems help her to eat at a slower pace.(I add yogurt to dog food.　Dogs love yogurt, and it's good for them, too. )Duchはドッグフードを飲み込むようにして食べるので小さなコップをフードボウルの中に入れてみました。コップの周りから食べないといけないので食べるスピードがゆっくりになるようです。毎日ドッグフードにヨーグルトを混ぜてあげています。ヨーグルトは犬の健康にも良いらしいですよ。

Toronto

We traveled to Toronto last week.It was 8 hours drive with dogs.Our dogs behaved very well on the road.It was better than driving with nagging kids.We had many doggy stuffs, so we rented a bigger SUV.Toyota 4Runner handles like a truck.We didn’t like it.   Slide Show The weather was not good in Toronto.It was not colder than NY though.The streets were dirty, because of the rain and litters.There are many homeless on the streets.It’s just like NYC.But Toronto has something NYC doesn’t have: an underground walkway (PATH).According to Guinness World Records, PATH is the largest underground shopping complex with 27 km (16 miles) of shopping arcades. It has 371,600 sq. meters (4 million sq. ft) of retail space. More than 50 buildings/office towers are connected through PATH. Twenty parking garages, five subway stations, two major department stores, six major hotels, and a railway terminal are also accessible through PATH. It also provides links to some of Toronto's major tourist and entertainment attractions such as: the Hockey Hall of Fame, Roy Thomson Hall, Air Canada Centre, Rogers Centre, and the CN Tower. City Hall and Metro Hall are also connected through PATH. We stayed at Sheraton Centre Toronto Hotel which is connected to Path and located across from City Hall.It’s a dog friendly hotel.Our dogs used the park front of City Hall for their business.Location wise Sheraton Centre is very good.We stayed at Sheraton Club Room on 41st floor same floor as Premium Suites.However hotel room was outdated.Bathroom really needs remodeling. Also, they need to have better management.This hotel is not well managed.When traveling with dogs, we don’t have many hotel choices; and this Sheraton was one of the best for dog owners.We thought Toronto's population age is lower than other big cities.However, the senior population in Toronto increased; the population of the municipality of Toronto is older than those of the surrounding suburbs.The census data in May 2006 the median age of those living in the Toronto region was 37.5, compared to 36.2 in 2001.We didn’t see many older people at PATH.People loved our dogs, but many buildings are not dog friendly.I met a Dutch woman with dogs at PATH.She told me that if any store/building manager fusses about dogs, I should pretend I didn’t know No Dog’s allowed there.Her best friend was Japanese and passed way, so she named her dog “Aiko” which was her friend’s name.She was shopping with a friend who is Scottish.There are many “foreigners” in Toronto.Toronto is a city where more than 150 languages are spoken daily and where 50 % of residents are foreign born.It was strange that we were the ONLY Non White at The Royal Agricultural Winter Fair; we estimate there were at least about 4,000 seats!It is called “Royal”, because the Members of the Canadian Royal Family have been guests of honor at the fair.Elizabeth II – officially titled Queen of Canada Elizabeth II, as Queen of Canada is the royal patron of the Fair.We had never saw so many cattle at same time so close up before.We never had been at Agricultural fair before.I don’t think there is any one in NYC.Anyway, it is the largest combined indoor agricultural fair and international equestrian competition in the world.We enjoyed the Horse show at the Royal.We didn’t see IAMS SuperDogs show.There was a long line more than one hour before the show time.It seems Torontonian doesn’t mind a long waiting line for free ticket.The Art Gallery of Ontario (AGO) reopened last week and it offered free Admission for three days.People wanted to save $18 by lining up day and night in the rain.It was cold rain….I wonder how many people got sick from that long line.Well, Canada has good health care plan.They can afford to get sick. Slide Show 雨のトロントから戻ってきました。犬達と一緒の8時間以上のドライブでしたが犬達が大人しくしていてくれたので、文句を言う子供連れのドライヴより楽だったです。犬連れ旅行は荷物が多くて今回はトヨタのSUV４ランナー（ハイラックスサーフ）をレンタルしました。 小回りが利かなくてトラックを運転しているような乗り心地で二度と借りたくないです。途中でナイアガラを通過したのですが残念ならの曇り空。トロントは毎日雨で街は泥とゴミで汚く、マンハッタンのようにホームレスも多かったです。トロントの平均年齢は年々上がってきているそうですが、それでも街で行き交う人は若い世代が多く感じられました。ホームレスも若者が多かったです。トロントにはマンハッタンと違って世界最大の地下街（PATH）が有るので悪天の日でもショッピングが楽しめます。２７KM の地下道が５０以上のデパートやオフィスビルディング、地下鉄の５駅、２０の駐車場に繋がっています。ギネスブックによると世界最大の地下街です。このPATH内はとても清潔に保たれています。私達が泊まったシェラトンもPATHに繋がっています。シェラトンはトロント市庁の前に建っているので犬たちは市庁前の公園で用をたすことが出来ました。主な観光地にも近く立地条件は抜群なのですが、ホテルの部屋はイマイチでした。私たちの部屋は４１階でスウィートルームがあるフロアでしたがバスルームは改造が必要なほど古いです。兎も角ドッグフレンドリーのホテルは少ないので選択の枠が狭いです。DukeとDuchessは何処でも大人気でした。PATH内では何時間でも大人しくベビーカーに座っていてくれたので楽でした。Duchessを縫ぐるみだと思った人も多かったです。PATHで出会った犬連れの女性はオランダから移民してきたそうで亡くなった日本人親友の名前(Aiko)を犬に付けたそうです。彼女と一緒にショッピングしていた女性はスコットランドからの移民。トロントには移民が多く人口の半分が移民で１５０国語以上の言葉が話されているそうです。街を歩いていると英語やフランス語以外の言語を耳にします。それなのに私達が事前にチケットを買っていたロイヤル・アグリカルチャー・ウィンター・フェアのホース・ショーでは4千人ほどの観客中、白人でないのは私達だけでした。酪農業博覧会場でも白人が９９％占めていました。ロイヤル・アグリカルチャー・ウィンター・フェアは世界最大の酪農業博覧会で農産物や食料品の展示会はもちろん、家畜の品評会、競り市もあり、目玉イベントであるホースショーではオリンピックで金メダルを取った選手も参加していました。ロイヤルと呼ばれるのはカナダの皇室が主賓だからです。英国のエリザベス女王がカナダの女王でもあり、この博覧会のパトロンです。楽しみにしていたドックショーは入場料を払えば無料で観れるショーだからか一時間以上も前から長蛇の列。並んで待つのが嫌いなジョンと一緒だったのでドッグショーは諦めました。ホースショーは全席指定だったので並ぶことなくスンナリ入場できました。先週再オープンしたオンタリオ美術館（Art Gallery of Ontario）は先週末だけ無料で入館できたのですが、氷雨の中を朝から晩まで長蛇の列でした。立って並ぶことが苦にならない私でも入館は諦めました。次回１８ドル払って入館します。それにしてもトロントの人はタダ券の為に並ぶことが苦にならないのですね～。あの氷雨の中で何人が風邪をひいたのでしょうか？カナダでは医療保険制度が良いので病気になっても構わないのでしょうね。

Traveling to Toronto

We are traveling to Toronto with dogs.Eight hours drive one way.We bought the tickets for The The Horse show at The Royal Agricultural Winter Fair.I want see THE IAMS SUPERDOGS show too.It will be fun....犬連れでカナダのトロントまで行ってきます。片道８時間のドライヴ。かなりシンドイ旅行になりそうです。それに今週のトロントは雨・・・でもトロントには世界最大の地下道が在ってショッピングセンターが延々と繋がっているらしいです。ロイヤル・アグリカルチャー・ウィンター・フェア（世界最大の酪農業博覧会）で行われる国際馬術競技のチケットを買ってあります。スーパードッグのショーもあるらしくて楽しみにしています。

I visited NJ Korean town with Kim.We treated ourselves to lunch at our favorite restaurant.Yum,yum,yum.I gained weight more than 10 pounds this year.I want to blame it on the side effect of medications, but maybe eating too much yummy food contributed to my weight gain also.I tried Banana diet which was very popular in Japan this fall.It did work first week, but I gained back and added more weight now.I’m still on Banana diet though.It seems give me energy in Morning. I’m not tired in Morning anymore. Shopping at H Mart is always fun.No one in the store thinks I’m NOT a Korean.Everyone talk to me in Korean which I don’t understand.John thinks I look like Mongolian.I have a round flatter face and smaller eyes.Maybe my ancestors were from Mongol to Korea and to Japan. Anyway, I bought Gobou (burdock root) first time in US.They don’t look tasty but they have unique flavor which Japanese loves.They originated from Scandinavia to the Mediterranean, and from the British Isles through Russia, and the Middle East to China and Japan.Hum, my ancestors might come from Scandinavia also.Do you think I look like a Scandinavian?久しぶりにニュージャージー州のコリアンタウンへ友人と行って来ました。お気に入りのレストランでランチ。韓国人の友人と一緒だと注文できる料理も違うのですよね。美味しかったですよ。 今年になってから５～６キロも体重増加。リュウマチと線維筋痛症の薬の副作用の所為だと思いたいのですがこういった美味しい食べ物の過食も原因かも・・・そこで先月から日本で流行ったバナナダイエットを試しているのですが最初の一週間は数キロ簡単に減量したのに何時の間にか体重がダイエット前より増えていました。それでもこのダイエット（？）を続けているのは何故か午前中元気が出て朝寝をしなくても良くなったからです。体重は減らないけど私の健康の為には良いようです。ランチで満腹した後は韓国系のスーパー（Hマート）で買い物。腹ごなしにスーパーの中を歩き回るのは消化にも良いですよね。私は何故か韓国人に間違えられることが多くて今回も多くの韓国人に韓国語で話しかけられました。ジョンは私の扁平な丸顔と小さめの目は蒙古人に似ていると言います。若しかするとご先祖様は蒙古から韓国を越えて日本に渡ってきたのかも・・・Hマートで渡米後初めて牛蒡を買いました。牛蒡の根の部分を料理して食べるのは日本と韓国だけらしいです。茶色の根を食べようと考えた人は勇気がありましたね。元々はスカンディナビア（北欧）の植物で地中海を渡って英国へ、英国諸島からロシア、中近東、中国そして日本へ渡ったそうです。日本原産の野菜ではなかったのですね。若しかすると私のご先祖様も牛蒡と共に北欧から日本へ渡ってきたのかも？私、北欧人の血をひいているように見えませんか？

A Carpet of Leaves

(by Science Made Simple, Inc.)  Our flowering cabbage is changing to pretty pinkish-purple　葉牡丹が綺麗なピンクがかった紫色になって来ました。でも．．．  Deer's meal鹿の餌？見事に食べられてしまっています。Dukeの警護は役に立たないようです。

Rainy day

Maui

We stayed at a B&B in Maui.I think it was the cheapest place with a bed in Maui.Of course, the cheapest way to sleep in Maui is camping at the state park.But we were not up for camping.(Our dogs got the bed at the boarding. Why we had to sleep outdoor without a bed?) Ocean Breeze Hideaway B&B fitted the bill perfectly.The location is good.It’s in a residential area in Kihei.It’s close enough to beaches, restaurants and shopping.We got our own separate entrance, patio and private bathroom.It’s clean and cozy. It was like visiting your friend’s guest house.The innkeeper, Bob and Sande were very nice.We enjoyed the chitchat every morning with them and the other guest, a German couple from Canada.There were Sun Umbrella and beach chairs we can use.Bob also lent us “The Road to Hana” CD that was very useful.We highly recommend this B&B for anyone who doesn’t want to spend too much money for lodging.There are so many places to go out at Maui, why we spend lots money for expensive hotels’ room where you just need for sleep at night.Maui offers so much to see and do.The hiking tour was so fun.We wore Japanese Jika-tabi, I think they are called “water shoes” in Maui, during the hiking tour.It has good traction on wet rocks.We went down the hill grapping the gigantic tree roots.We jumped into a small fall. Even John, a non-swimmer, did it too.John drove to Hana.It was one scary road to drive.30 degree curves all over.If you don’t have strong stomach WITH steel nerve, you shouldn’t go there.But the beaches beyond Hana (Koki & Homoa beaches) were so beautiful; I think it was worth going there even you might suffer one or two motion sickness.There are black and red beaches.I liked the red beach more than the black beach.The Black beach had many red ants.We didn’t see any red ant at other beaches in Maui.Does anyone know why?We drove to West Maui beaches, too.The water was so clear and the white/gold beaches are pretty.John loved taking naps on the beaches.Maui gets cloudy most afternoon. So, we didn’t see any spectacular sunset like Santorini, Greece.But Haleakala National Park makes up for the disappointing sunset views. The summit of Haleakala volcano was unlike any other landscapes I have known. It looks like a scene from Si-Fi movies. We spend a few hours hiking in the cinder desert, Sliding Sands.It was easy to going down…. Coming back was another story.Now we know why they are called “Sliding Sands”.It took more than twice thee time and energy to go back up.(There is only one way to go back: walk back on the same sandy trail you came down.)Also, the high-elevation’s (9740 feet) thin air made it worse.John stopped at any big rock he can sit on.I thought I had to get the rescuer to fetch him.No more Sliding Sands hiking for us.We are too old for this kind adventure.Next time I will happy to pay $160 to join the Pony express tour going down Sliding Sands.(Oh, I forgot mention that horses dropping were all over on the trail.)  SLIDE SHOW  SLIDE SHOW  SLIDE SHOW  ホノルルからマウイまで飛行機で３０分ほどです。航空会社の経営難から現在ホノルルーマウイ間を飛んでいるのは二社だけ。マウイの観光客は去年の同じ時期と比べて１４％減少していると言うニュースをホノルルのホテルで見ました。今回のハワイ旅行、犬たちを掛かりつけの獣医さんで二週間預かってもらったのでかなり痛い出費になりました。（何処のペットホテルも一長一短で、最終的に獣医さんにお願いしました。）マウイで一番安く宿泊する方法の一つは国立・州立公園キャンプ場でのキャンプ。でもジョンの「犬達が室内の快適なベッドで寝ているのに、何で僕達が屋外の地面で寝なくてはいけないのだ。」と言う意見に私も同意。そこでジョンの猛反対を押し切って宿泊代を節約する為、キヘイに在る（多分マウイで一番安いであろう）B&Bに泊まりました。寝室三部屋の民家を改造したB&Bで個別の門（出入り口）、パティオ、バスルームが付いていてしかも清潔で快適に過ごせました。オーナー夫婦ももう一組のゲスト（カナダ在住のドイツ人）もフレンドリーで、毎朝のお喋りが楽しかったです。部屋のクローゼットにはビーチ用のタオル、椅子、傘、アイスボックス等が有り、とっても役に立ちました。良いB&Bだと友人宅に滞在しているような気分を味わえます。更にこのB&Bは立地条件も悪くなく、（ホワイト・パウダー）ビーチ、ショッピング、レストランにも近くて便利です。安くて快適な宿泊所をお探しの方にはOcean Breeze Hideaway B&Bが、お勧めです。 マウイには山と森林が多くハイキング場所に困りません。私たちは半日のハイキングツアーに参加しました。「このTABIは日本から輸入したもので日本では川中での釣りに使用される」と言うガイドの説明で渡された「ウォーター・シューズ」は地下足袋でした。（日本でも釣りには地下足袋ではなくて釣り用のゴム長を履くのでは？）地下足袋は濡れた岩の上や小川の中を歩くのに滑らなくて実用的です。アマゾン・コムでも販売しているようなのでクリスマス休暇のカボ・サン・ルーカス（メキシコ）家族旅行用に買おうかと考えています。このハイキングツアーでは崖を大木の根を?んで下りたり、滝からジャンプしたりアドベンチャー豊富のハイキングをエンジョイしました。ガイドなしで行ったら確実に迷子になってしまうようなハイキングコースでした。 途中で木に生っている果物を食べたり、虫や鳥の観察をしたりガイドが経験豊富な人で勉強になりました。マウイに行ったら《ハナへドライヴ》と言うのがマウイ観光のお決まりの一つ。急カーブばかりの海岸沿いの道を片道三時間ほどドライブするので、車酔いする人や心臓が弱い人には悪夢のドライブ。途中の景色も美しいのですが、大して見るところも無いハナの町を過ぎてからのブラック・ビーチやレッド・ビーチは美しくて恐怖のドライブを耐える価値ありです。マウイにはホワイト・ブラック・レッド・ゴールデンと各種のビーチがあります。ブラックビーチでは他のビーチで見かけない赤蟻がいました。マウイのビーチはドックフレンドリーなようで何処でも犬連れの人達を見かけました。ハナ・ハイウェーの途中に数軒あるフルーツスタンドに二回立ち寄りました。多分裏の林の中に自然に生えているであろう果物を売っている男性はボストン出身。ガールフレンドはニューヨークの我が家から近い町からマウイに来て住んでいます。スタンドが立っている裏の丘の上に立っている《あばら家》を月々１７５０ドルで借りているそうです。このフルーツスタンドの収入でどうやって生活しているのでしょうかね？彼らから買った巨大なアボカドは外側が紫色。中身はいつも食べ慣れているアボカド。東洋人が経営しているスタンドでココナッツに穴を開けてもらって飲んだココナッツはジュースが少なくて物足りなかったです。元々ココナッツのジュースは少ないですよね。飲んだ後、割って身を食べたかったですが、ナイフを所持していなかったのであきらめました。さてマウイの観光地のナンバーワンは　ハレアカラ国立公園ではないでしょうか？山頂付近のハレアカラ・クレーターの景色はこの世のものとは思えません。まるでサイエンス・フィクションの映画の一シーンのよう・・・毎日午後になると曇ってくるマウイではエーゲ海のサントリニ島のような素晴らしい夕陽を見ることが出来ません。でもハレアカラ・クレーターの景色はサントリニ島の夕陽にも負けない絶景です。ジョンと私は無謀にもスライディング・サンズ(Sliding Sands)・トレイルに挑戦。見事に負けました。気軽に「15kmのハイキング」と考えていたのですが行きはヨイヨイ、帰りは怖い・・・スライディング・サンズって《滑る砂》と言う意味で戻ってくる時は行きの二倍も三倍も時間もエネルギーも必要。高地の砂漠というのは呼吸をするのが辛いです。座れる大石を見つける度に休憩するジョンの為に救助隊を呼ぼうかと一瞬考えてしまいました。次回は＄１６０出費して乗馬のツアーに参加する以外はこのトレイルには行きません。そう、馬の糞が彼方此方に落ちているのを避けながらのハイキングだったのです。挑戦される方、マスクを持参されるのをお忘れなく・・・
