Hawaii trip

It took the long time to recover from a vacation.I got sick on the way back from Maui and I didn’t feel well after getting back to home.This was my third trip to Hawaii this year.It’s always the same in Honolulu.Nice weather, many Japanese tourists and a long wait at Duke Restaurant.(Oh, we waited hour and half at "Yard house" on Friday night.John was mad.) This time we got a wheel chair accessible room at Sheraton Waikiki.It seems if you use AAA discount rate to book Sheraton, they will give you a wheel chair accessible room.Hmmm, they might have mistaken AAA with AARP.Anyway, I was happy with their fitness room with great views.I used the machines everyday while we stayed there.It helped me to get ready for hiking at Maui following week.I always try to do something new at Honolulu.This time, I took a bus at Honolulu first time.There is a better bus and a regular bus.The better bus has wheel chair area inside.(The seats flip up, so wheel chair can park there.)I took a bus to Nu‘uanu YMCA | YMCA of Honolulu.There is a Japanese gathering every Thursday at the Y.Every Thursday there is a lecture by Japanese Guest speaker.This week’s topic was “Reverse mortgage in Okinawa” There is only one homeowner who chose Reverse mortgage in entire Okinawa.Typhoons hit Okinawa every year; even though the houses are made with concrete, they don’t last more than 30 years.So, when you finish paying the 30 years loan, it’s time to get another loan to rebuild the house.Also, Japanese want to leave their house to children, especially In Okinawa, eldest son has to protect their “Family home”. There is another problem.Japanese live long, that is why they worry “What if I use up the entire reverse mortgage loan and I’m still alive? “After the lecture, my Honolulu friend, Shizue took me to a Vietnamese restaurant, “Pho To-Chau” in Chinatown.I had never eaten Vietnamese food before.My first Vietnamese food was “Pho”, white rice noodles in clear beef broth.There are many topping to choose from (Just like pizza).We order Beef tendon and tripe and something else.It was served with bean sprouts, basil, cilantro, jalapeno and lime.We got Beef tendon and tripe and something else.It was good and cheap. She told me that usually there is a long line outside of this restaurant.We were lucky. It was after 1:30 pm; late for lunch hour, so we didn’t have to wait to be seated.Even in daylight, Honolulu Chinatown was scary.There were many homeless and closed stores.People form a long line on the street for free food delivered by volunteers.The streets smell so bad, because homeless pee on the street.John and I enjoyed watching the "Changing of the King's Guard" at the King’s village.The rifle drill exhibition was very impressible.It gave us an inspiration for the Gun shooting.I cannot believe those guns are so heavy. Slide showお久しぶりです。２週間のハワイ旅行から戻ってきて体調を崩してへたばっていました。年寄りには旅行は疲れます。今年３回目のハワイ旅行でしたが初体験が多い楽しい旅行でした。去年までは色々なホテルを利用していましたが　今年はシェラトン・ワイキキ・ホテルに泊まっています。立地条件がよいのが最大の理由です。今回、AAA(アメリカ自動車協会）メンバーの割引料金を利用したのですが車椅子可の部屋を与えられました。AARP（アメリカ引退者協会）のメンバーの割引と間違えているのではないでしょうかね？今までフィットネスセンターを利用したことは無かったのですが今回は毎日フィットネスセンター通い。バルコニーにもマシンが置かれていて素晴らしい景色を見ながら運動が出来るのですよ。これはシェラトン・ワイキキの最大の利点ではないでしょうか？人気のあるレストラン「Duke」は何時でも待ち時間が長いですがサンセットを見ながらの食事をしたかったのでビーチサイドを希望したら予約を入れていたのにも拘らず、４５分間待ちでした。ワイキキ「Nobu」は予約無しでもOK。昔、ロンドン「Nobu」は３ヶ月先まで予約で満席だったのにね～。待ち時間最長は金曜日の夜の「Yard House」１時間半。近くのギャラリー巡りで時間を潰しました。シェラトン・ワイキキはこれらのレストランに近いので便利です。ワイキキ初体験の一つはラーメンを食べたこと。｢ラーメンなかむら」はカウンターだけのお店。久しぶりの日本のラーメン、美味しかったです。夕食はレストランでお酒を飲みながらゆっくり楽しむのですが昼食はラーメンが美味しくて安くて良いですね。初めてワイキキのバスに乗りました。今まではレンタルカーで動き回っていたのですがホテルでの駐車料金が高いし、ハワイ旅行も１０回以上になると特に遠出したい場所も無くなって来ているのですよね。アメリカでも日本でもバスに乗ることが滅多にないのでバス事情は良く判らないのですが、ハワイのバスラインは二種類のバスが走っているようで大型の方は車椅子のまま乗れるように前面の三席が畳めるようになっていました。バスに乗って　ワイキキのYMCAで日系人会主催｢木曜日会」に参加。毎週各方面の専門家を招待しての講演会。今回は｢リバースモーゲッジ」、特に沖縄での問題。勉強になりました。台風被害の多い沖縄ではコンクリートで建てられた家でも３０年持たないらしいです。住宅ローンを払い終わった頃に新たにローンを組んで家を新築するらしいです。（アメリカでは古い家を改造・修理しながら保持していきます。）長男に家を残す習慣が残っている沖縄では家を抵当のローンは好まれないらしいです。そして長寿の日本ではリバースモーゲッジのローンを使い切った後はどうなる？と言う心配もありますね。沖縄では一軒しかリバースモーゲッジを利用していないらしいです。さて｢木曜日会｣の後、私のホノルルの友人がチャイナタウンに在るベトナム・レストラン「Pho To-Chau」に連れて行ってくれました。いつもは長蛇の列が出来ると言う評判のお店らしいですが私達が入店したのは１時半過ぎでランチのラッシュアワーが過ぎた後だったようです。生まれて初めてのベトナム料理、Pho(ライスヌードル）美味しかったですよ。具を色々選べれるのですが｢生ものはアブナイ｣と言う友人の忠告に従って生の牛肉はパス。選んだPhoには色々な内臓が入っていました。自分で好きな香菜を乗せてライムも絞りいれて・・・病み付きになりそうな味でした。ワイキキのチャイナタウンは寂れていて昼間でも危ない地帯と言う風情でした。ホームレスが道脇で寝ていたり、ボランティアによる無料の食事配食を待つ列が並んでいたり・・・兎に角、尿の悪臭が酷い。これでは店仕舞いするレストランが増えるわけですよね。もう一つ生まれて初めての体験。ガンクラブでの実弾射撃。キングスビレッジでの近衛兵の交替セレモニーを見た後、ワイキキのストリートに数多く立っているガンクラブのチラシ配りのオジサンに誘われてフラフラとガンクラブに行ってしまいました。銃があんなに重いものとは思っていませんでした。拳銃でも重くて射撃中、腕が段々下がってきました。一回経験したらもう十分です。

This is the Eyeglasses cord that floats on water.It will be perfect for beach and all water sports.John lost his prescription glasses while kayaking in Hawaii this spring.My sunglasses never stay on my face.(I don't have any nose bridge.)Now we don't have to worry about losing our glasses to Nemo again.Girls, I got extra cords for all of you and BF.水に浮く眼鏡用コードです。この春、ジョンがハワイの海で眼鏡を紛失。私は鼻柱が低いのでサングラスがずり落ちるので海ではサングラスをかけれません。でもこのグラスコードが有れば安心。来週からのハワイ旅行に持って行きます。今回ハワイ旅行は１２日間、次回のメキシコ旅行では１０日間預けなければいけないのに犬達のペットホテル、何処もイマイチ。結局、掛かり付けの獣医さんにお願いして預かってもらうことになりました。室内外にドッグランが有るし万一の場合も安心です。来月のカナダ旅行は犬達も一緒。車輪付き・バックパックにもなるドッグキャリアーを注文しました。

Ornamental Peppers are eatable

Our Ornamental Peppers are spicy!! HOT! HOT!! HOT!!! John loves them.We try to eat Kale more often now.The leaves of the kale have more nutritional value for almost any other food around. 我が家の観賞用のペッパー、辛いです。色が綺麗なのでこれからは色々な料理に使えそうですね。最近私たちがよく食べるようにしている野菜のケール。和名はリョクヨウカンラン（緑葉甘藍）、ハゴロモカンラン（羽衣甘藍）らしいですね。栄養に富み、ビタミン群、ミネラル類、酵素類、葉緑素、各種フラボノイドの含有量は緑黄色野菜の中でも抜き出ています。時間をかけて調理をしなくてはいけないのが欠点ですが、３０分煮た後でもこの青さ。少し味に癖がありますが　カリカリのベーコンやサンドライ・トマト等と一緒に炒めると美味しいですよ。

adverse destiny

I lost my earring while I was wearing it AGAIN.This time was (Amy’s) diamond earring.Last month I lost a diamond charm at the spa.Jenny and I checked everywhere, but we couldn’t find it.My mom says “When you lose/break the thing you wear or treasure, it became your vicarious sacrifice. You avoided calamity.”She is always a positive thinker.However, I don’t know how my mom can solace my friend now.A tragic hit and run accident has taken the life of her oldest son.He was struck while riding his bike.He was only 25 years old.He worked few years after graduated from HS and just graduated from collage this spring.He got married two years ago with his HS sweet heart.I feel like it was yesterday, thinking a song for Mother/Son dance with her.She has suffered a series of misfortunes.Her cousin was riding bike and hit by lighting and died few years ago.Her sister-in-low died on an accident with a truck. I wish there were something I could say to make her feel better.ピアスのイヤリングを紛失してしまいました。気が付いたら左の耳につけていたダイヤの一つが留め金とも無くなっていたのです。先月はスパでネックレスに付けていたダイヤのチャームを紛失。どちらも小さい物なので高価ではないけど残念です。母が｢ダイヤが身代わりになってくれたのよ。」と言ってくれています。母に言わせると大事にしているものを紛失したり壊した場合は持ち主の身代わりになってくれて大きな災難から逃れた証なのだそうです。ポジティブ思考の母らしい慰め方ですね。母でも不運続きの私の友人を慰める言葉は見つからないと思います。友人の息子さんがひき逃げ事故にあって一昨日亡くなりました。働きながら今年大学を卒業して仕事のトレーニング期間をテキサスで過ごしていたところです。二年前に先に大学を卒業していた高校時代のスイートハートと結婚。披露宴恒例の母と息子のダンス曲を私も一緒に色々考えたのが昨日のような気がします。彼女の義姉がトラックとの追突事故で死亡、三年前には従弟が自転車に乗っていて落雷で即死、今回は息子さんがバイキング中に車に跳ねられ崖に墜落。私には彼女を慰める言葉が見つかりません。

Fun night out

John and I went to Connecticut to see Richard Marx and Matt Scannell in a special acoustic concert. Okay, you might think “Who is Matt Scannell?”He is Vertical Horizon’s lead vocalist/guitarist.You must heard “Everything You Want” on the radio before.John never cares about that song before, but he is fond of Scannell now.They opened nicely with Marx's "Now and Forever", followed by Scannell's "Sunshine".And the show ended with John’s favorite song “Right Here Waiting”.We really enjoyed the folksy atmosphere.In between the song talks were funny and charming.The concert was awesome, but we didn’t like the Dinner at Koo, a Neo-Japanese Restaurant in Ridgefield, CT. It has been highly recommended by Zagat Survey.We thought it was over priced and potions were too small for the dinner.We didn’t like the sweetness in the steak sauce.Anyway, GPS was not helpful on the way back home.We wasted at least 10 minutes.I would say it was stressful for 10 minutes.Over-dependence on GPS devices has resulted in more inconvenience than actual danger, but things took a turn for the worse for some drivers.http://www.nytimes.com/2008/10/01/nyregion/01gps.html?_r=1&em&oref=slogin「Right here waiting」で有名なリチャード・マークスと「Everything You Want」のVertical Horizonのリードシンガー、マット・スキャネルのコンサートに行ってきました。こじんまりしたコンサート会場で観客とアーティストが一体となった気取りの無い雰囲気で楽しかったです。大きな会場のコンサートは私的にはとても高いチケット(１５０－２００ドル)でも会場のスクリーンでアーティストを観るという場合が多いのでそれならテレビやビデオで観た方がマシだと思うのですよね。｢あの人は今？」のリチャード・マークスだけでなくジョン・ボン・ジョヴィも小規模のコンサートを開くことがあって数年前に娘たちとフィラデルフィアまで行ってきました。若者たちにモミクチャにされて年寄りの私には体力的に無理がありましたが素敵でしたよ～、ジョン・ボン・ジョヴィ。さて一時間もかけてコネチカットまで行ったのでコンサート前に会場近くに在る新日本料理のレストランKOOに行ってきました。ウェッブでは評価が高いのですが高いだけでディナーとしては量も少ないし大した事無かったです。炭火焼のステーキにかかっていたソースは甘くて変な味でした。もう二度とは行きたくないレストランです。コンサートからの帰路、ジョンが新しく購入したGPSを利用したのですが又迷子になってしまいました。GPSが原因の交通事故が増加中だそうです。先日、NYでGPSの声に従って運転していた車が線路に乗り上げてしまいました。同じ場所で同じようなことが数回起こっているらしいです。

Damage#1 Damage #2 (Under my chair)DukeとDuchが何か目論んでいますね。絨毯の縁を隠そうとしているのです。絨毯の縁を噛みかみ。何故か端っこ。目立つ場所です。二箇所、それも私の椅子の近くの被害が大きいです。多分Dukeの仕業だと思うのです。Duchが我が家に来るまでDukeが絨毯の縁を噛む事はなかったと思うのですが・・・ストレス、欲求不満が溜まっているのかも知れません。Duchが我が家に来て１０月１４日で二年になるのですよ。手間の掛かる問題児だったけど・・・色々な事が起こった二年でした。絨毯はDuchの毛で縁どりをしましょうかね。

Everyday, we hear grimmer and grimmer news. My mom said “well, we should be happy just being alive!!”She is an ultimate optimist.She is legally blind but nothing can stop her. A stock broker from the biggest brokerage house in Japan called her last month.He said “Now, each unit is ONLY 500,000 yen (=$50k), and you will get 20% return.”You get back 20% of 50K???She didn’t buy his sales pitch, but she almost bought gold from a questionable company.She is getting many telephone calls from companies selling gold.They are telling her that people are out from the stock market and they are pouring their money into the gold market. (IF people still have any $$, I think they will keep cash in safety box.)In India, there is the custom of giving gold as a betrothal gift to the future groom’s family.India’s economy is booming.So, they spend more money for the wedding and therefore, they are buying more gold.I don’t know about gold in India, but I don’t think my mom should invest her money now.She doesn’t have to worry about money now and she and my dad will be fine another 40 years. (She wants live till 120 and my sisters and I think her wish might come true.)I know for sure that she will live long enough to see her depressed stocks will come back alive.　秋ですね。我が家の林も鮮やかな赤や黄色で彩られる季節になりました。本来なら果物や野菜の収穫、紅葉狩りを楽しむ秋なのですが最近は気が重くなるようなニュースばかりで滅入ってしまいますね。母が｢生きているだけでも有難いと思わないと・・・」と言っています。生来の楽天家で強度の弱視(ほぼ盲目）ですが、何でも自分でしています。株の投資が趣味で毎日のように証券会社の方と電話で話しをするのが楽しみなのですが、先月或る大手の証券会社からの電話で｢５００万一口で２０％のリターン｣と言う話が有ったらしいです。今この時期に２０％のリターンを約束するなんて詐欺ですよ。元金の２０％しか戻ってこないと言う話なのでしょうかね～。この話には乗らなかった母も、もう少しで金投資の話に乗ってしまっていたのです。最近、金投資のお誘いの電話がよくあるらしいのです。｢株が駄目だから投資家は金市場に流れている。」(手元に予備のお金が有る人は多分自宅の金庫に大事にしまっているのじゃないでしょうかね？）「インドでは花嫁側が《金》を花婿の家に結納金として持っていく習慣があって、好景気のインドでは結婚式も益々豪華になって《金》が足りなくなっている。」本当の話としても母は投資をしない方が良いと思うのです。まぁ、うちの母は１２０歳まで生きるつもりでいるようですので暴落した手持ちの株が急騰する日まで気長に待っていると思います。
