ジープのようなジプニー↑（2011年10月28日、マニラ、フィリピン） ジプニーは、マニラの町中を縦横無尽に走っている公共の乗り物。 小さなバスのように思えたが、良く見るとジープの荷台を長くしたような感じ。 装飾は一台ごと異なる。 銀ぎら銀のものもある。 乗り降りを観察していると、何となく乗り場のような場所がそれとなくあるようであるが、適当に乗って適当に降りているようにも見える。 庶民の乗り物。 いつか乗ってみたい。【Bon app?tit !】 ニシキヘビの心臓の秘密 Pythons（ニシキヘビ）are able to live for nearly a year without eating, but when they do eat, their metabolisms increase more than 40-fold and their organs immediately begin to get larger to aid digestion. 尊敬と思いやり、温かい心

pertinacityの意味がわかりました
「断固たる決心」を英語で何と言ったらいいかと考えていたら、dogged determinationを思い着きました。 犬が付きまとう様からdoggedになったのかなぁと覚えている単語です。 辞書を見ていたら、pertinaciousと言う単語が、あることが分かりました。 不屈の、断固としたという意味があり、名詞形は、pertinacityになるようです。 perseverance, persistency, tenacityも不屈、しつこさ、粘り強さをあらわす単語が見つかりました。 次の文は、しつこく何度何度も努力を繰り返す子供の様を表した文です。 Again and again...with the inexorable（情け容赦のない）pertinacity of a child...did he renew his efforts. あまりしつこいと次の文のようになりますので気をつけましょう The man's quiet pertinacity kindled a sort of indignation（憤り）in her. 最後に、pertinacityの意味を書いておきます。 persistent determination To be determined to achieve a particular aim in spite of difficulties or opposition さあ、「知らない英単語はない！」と豪語しましょう。「知らない英単語はない！」と周りの人に豪語すると、知らない英単語が無くなります。【Bon app?tit !】 Hydroponics Hydroponics（水耕栽培）is the practice of growing plants in nutrient-enriched water - without soil. 良い人に恵まれて
昔の私は、人の良い点を見るというより、その人の悪い点ばかり見ているところがありました。 人を心の中で批判したり非難することが自分の習い性になってしまっていました。 99の良い点が見えなくなって、１つの悪い点ばかりに目が行き、1つの悪い点がある故にその人の全てが気に入らなくなることがよくありました。 自分のことは棚に上げて、人のことを心の中で批判する人間でした。 年を重ねるにつれ、批判するエネルギーは、感謝する気持ちに置き換わってきました。 今では、人の持っている良い点をいつも見ています。 自分の周りに気に入らない人は全くいなくなりました。 だから、毎日幸せです。 感謝です。【Bon app?tit !】 白象 A "white elephant" is an expensive possession that is a financial burden to maintain. 運命の支配者か環境の犠牲者か、英語で発見する心の安らぎ
「the master of your fate」と言う表現は、「運命の支配者」という意味でしょうか？ 運命の支配者と言うと大げさに聞こえますが、自分自身が運命の支配者になるということです。 簡単にいえば、「自分が運命を切り開く」と言う意味でしょう。 Paul McKenna著「Change Your Life In Seven Days」の中で次のような英文を見つけました。 Do you want to be the master of your fate or the victim of your circumstances? 意味は、「自分で運命を切り開きたいですか、それとも周りの人のせいにしたいですか？」 となるでしょう。 「the victim of your circumstances」と言う表現も面白いですね。 直訳すれば、「環境の犠牲者」となります。 この英文は、「周りの人のせいにしている人は犠牲者であり、運命を切り開く人は支配者だ」という意味を、一つの文章で簡潔に伝えていますね。【Bon app?tit !】 癌治療の費用 About 12 million people are diagnosed with cancer each year, and that number is expected to more than double over the next two decades.
