Encouraging text messages could help smokers kick the habit.
A recent study of 5,800 UK smokers who wanted to quit found that they were twice as likely to succeed when they received messages of encouragement on their cell phones.
Those who received the texts got five messages a day for five weeks and then three a week for about the next six months.
They could also indicate when they were experiencing a craving or had slipped and had a smoke and would then get a message containing suitable advice.
By the study's end, 10.7 percent of those receiving encouraging texts had stopped smoking, while only 4.9 percent of the control group had managed to quit.
