ウォルタークレインの本の仕事　/"Walter Crane's book creation exhibition"

先週の日曜日に、千葉市美術館で「ウォルタークレインの本の仕事」展を見ました。ウォルタークレインは19世紀にイギリスで版画による絵本を沢山制作した有名な人で、私も以前読んだ本に紹介されていたので知っていました。子供向けのアルファベットの教材から、美女と野獣、シンデレラ、長靴をはいた猫などの童話の色刷り本も作っています。花を擬人化した絵もありました。

中には私の知らないストーリーの絵本も紹介されていました。例えば青髭（Bluebeard)は知らず、掲示の絵本を読んで知りました。
強欲で金持ちな青髭男と仕方なく結婚した妻が、留守中に絶対に開けてはいけないと夫から言われた部屋に入ると、部屋中血だらけで、男の前妻の死体がありました。部屋を開けた事に気づいた夫が妻を殺そうとしますが、後は読んでのお楽しみです。
絵本はどれもシンプルな英語で書いてあるので、話が良く分かりました。

ウォルターは浮世絵の影響も受け、影の付け方も、線ではなく、浮世絵のように黒一色で表したりしています。ある絵本の中にも、浮世絵が描かれていました。
見るだけでも大変な量の作品が掲示されており、最後は駆け足のようになりましたが、内容は十分満足しました。

Last Sunday, I saw "Walter Crane's book creation exhibition" at Chiba city museum of
art. Mr.Walter Crane is very famous English man who was artist and book illustrator in

alphabet textbook for children to colored beautiful books of fairy tails, for example,
"Beauty and beast",　”Cinderella", ”Puss in boots" etc, and added that beautiful pictures
flowers personalized.

I did not know some stories about the fairy tails that I learned in this exhibition. For
example, "Bluebeard".
A lady got married with ill-famed blue-beard man. When he left a house for his business
trip, he passed some keys for all rooms, he made her promise not to open one small
room. She fired by curiosity and opened the room her husband banned to open. Then
she got a shock to find his ex wife's dead body was hidden there.
After his back home, he found her open the room secretly. He got anger and tried to kill
his wife. What would happen her !

Mr.Walter was influenced by Japanese UKIYO-E or Japanese woodblock prints made in
Edo era. When he drew dark side in his book, he not drew many lines but blackened the
area simply like UKIYO-E way. And I could see UKIYO-E in his books.
I enjoyed a lot to see many his original works though time was not enough.
