Buying off the Coinbase exchange is how most people (at least in the US) buy their first spot Bitcoin.

While some may say that the current path is to buy a Bitcoin ETF from one of the big Financial Institutions, such as Fidelity, or Charles Schwab, these ETF products, while they may take their value from their purchases of BTC, this is not the same as owning spot Bitcoin, aka “Real” Bitcoin.

In this article I will explain how I buy spot Bitcoin in the cheapest way (outside of person-to-person trading) that I am aware of.

For this example, we will use the following tools:

 Rabby Browser wallet.

 Squidrouter.

 A Ledger hardware wallet with Bitcoin installed.

First, I am going to explain the high costs of using the Coinbase exchange to buy Bitcoin. Then, I will show you a much cheaper way.

The Coinbase (Dis)Advantage

Coinbase is where many in the US buy their first Satoshi’s. They provide an easy, user-friendly way for beginners to make their first inroads to owning Bitcoin, and other crypto.

The problem is that Coinbase is also one of the most expensive ways to buy Bitcoin. Let me explain.

Buying BTC off Coinbase
コインベースでBTCを購入する場合

For $100, you’ll get 0.00087693. Multiply that by the (current) Coinbase price for BTC (110,793.83)

-$2.84 or 2.84% difference

Altogether, that’s $4.68 in the reduced amount of Bitcoin you receive plus the $1.84 fee. Right off the bat you are down 4.68%.

An interesting thing about Coinbase, is that it treats USDC (BASE) as cash. Since Coinbase does not charge for depositing cash, and since one can deposit from their bank cash in the form of USDC, there is no charge.
