How to Buy Diamonds

How to Buy DiamondsMany people want to know how to buy diamonds.

There are a number of important points to keep in mind when setting out to buy diamonds.

Firstly one has to establish the budget. How much are you prepared to spend? Diamonds can range from a few hundred dollars up to many hundreds of thousands.

Having got that in mind the next step is to find out what sort of diamond you can get in that price range.

There can be a big variation in diamonds at each price range. There are the cheapest in the range or the most expensive. Diamonds are graded by quality so you can by the best quality in a range or the worst or somewhere in between.

Understanding how diamonds are graded and what their value is an important step. Knowing the 4Cs, as given in the links on the right and understanding that an independent appraisal is available that will give an idea of the qualities of the diamond is also important.

Not taking the jewelers word at face value is also another important point. For example, generally speaking, discount diamonds should also be avoided. Diamonds are just not discounted. If they are then the quality should be checked by an independent appraiser as it will most likely be found that the quality of the diamond will show it is not worth even the discounted price but much less.

It is far better to get the best quality diamond you possibly can in the price range you can afford.

To buy a good quality diamond, first pick a reputable diamond dealer or jeweler. Check out their range of diamonds in your price range. Each diamond should come with an independent laboratory report from a recognized gemological authority such as The Gemological Institute of America for example.

The weight is not at important as the cut, clarity and color. They determine the quality of the diamond. What is the best quality you can get for the price you want to pay? Check out the links on the right. There is much information about grading diamonds there.

There is no substitute for doing due diligence. After all it is your money! It pays to understand something of what you are buying and how the system works.

Keep in mind the above and how to buy diamonds may not be as mysterious as it may have been in the past.
