The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) is extending its operation in Asia by opening a new laboratory in Japan in 2012. The launch was decided upon after recent talks with Japanese stakeholders.

“We are excited to develop a presence in Japan,” the president and CEO of GIA, Donna Baker said, “Japan, along with India and China, are the world’s leading diamond markets, behind the U.S. GIA’s mission is to promote the public trust in gems and jewelry and, as such, we will do everything within our means to carry forth this mission in Japan and to assist the Japanese diamond community in furthering these goals.”

It was announced that details on the GIA facility and services in Japan will be announced in early 2012.

The GIA also has plans to open a lab in Israel in 2012 also.
