Diamond Jewelry

Diamond JewelryBuying diamond jewelry is an important step and care should be taken to ensure that you know what you are buying.

On the left are some links about diamonds that can assist with understanding the qualities of a diamond and how you can be sure that the diamond you are buying is of a good quality and not something inferior with a high price.

Such things as the cut, clarity, color and carat weight of a diamond are very important. These are known as the 4 Cs and many web sites talk about the four Cs.

As well as those there is the type of setting of the diamond or diamonds in the jewelry piece. A ring for example. What sort of setting should one expect to see?

A Claw setting is probably the best as the diamond is then held in place by 4 or more small ?claws? that stop it from moving or getting lost. If one of the claws breaks then it is likely the stone will not be lost as there are the other claws to hold it. A paste setting, such as glue on the back of the diamond, to hold it in place is probably not so good. The diamond can work lose over time with the glue holding it in place deteriorating or breaking down. This can happen by reaction to cleaning materials or through the normal handling day to day.

Diamond jewelry can be susceptible to chemical reactions such as perfumes, hair spray, body oils etc. The diamond is not damaged but the metal that contains it may be. The worst that can happen is that the diamond eventually works lose and is losed.

Care should be taken to ensure that diamond jewelry is well looked after and maintained. For expensive pieces a professional cleaning by a jeweler is recommended. Otherwise one can clean at home by washing over a bowl in warm soapy water and rinsing very thoroughly to remove residue of soap then rinsing completely to get rid of any water remaining so the metal does not react with the water. Most jewelry is not completely pure gold or silver and contains other metals that can react with the water and perhaps oxidize or rust.

Then diamond jewelry should always be stored separate so the diamond does not scratch or mark other pieces you may have.

If you keep the above in mind then it is likely you will have a wonderful piece of diamond jewelry which you can treasure for a lifetime.
