Each diamond or set of diamonds should come with a certificate of appraisal. This will list out the qualities of the diamonds, the clarity, the color and importantly the cut. Oval or teardrop is often favored for earrings.
The diamonds should also be set well in a good quality precious metal such as 18 to 22 carat gold or white gold or even platinum (if you budget runs to that). A proper claw setting is advisable for three reasons. The diamonds are less likely to work lose and it is easier for a diamond valuer to inspect the diamonds, particularly the back. In addition it allows light to enter through the back and increase the sparkle thereby. Do ensure that the claw setting is of high quality. Check for any minute cracks in the diamond around the claws. Use a jewelers loupe or magnifying glass if you have to. Cracks can signify one of two things. Either the quality of the diamond is poor or the claw has been set too tight and is putting a strain on the diamond.
Cleaning diamond earrings is important also. Use fresh soapy warm water and a old toothbrush. Then rinse really well to get any residue from the setting and dry completely before storing separately from other jewelery or wearing again.
If you have reasonably large diamonds, say .5 of a carat or more, it is advisable to get them properly valued and insured for replacement value.
