They say the more things change the more they stay the same. Such is the case with Willson Contreras and the Milwaukee Brewers .
Going into Monday's game between the Boston Red Sox and the Brewers, Contreras was hit by a pitch that came from the Brewers 23 times while Contreras with a member of the Chicago Cubs . That number jumped to 24 when Brandon Woodruff caught Contreras on the fingers in the third inning.
The Red Sox first baseman was furious afterward and had words for Woodruff as he walked to first base. It marked the sixth time Woodruff hit Contreras.
"We've been through that — nine years for me. It seems like every year," Woodruff told reporters after the game . "He's trying to play a game and he's trying to get his side fired up, which is fine. Once I knew what was going on, I wasn't going to let it affect me on the mound.
"I knew I had a job to do. I knew pitch count was still down," he later added . "I knew the bullpen was short so I needed to go out there and keep competing."
Contreras wasn't happy after the game about getting hit again.
"They always say 'I'm not trying to hit you,'" he said . "That gets old. So next time they hit me again, I'm going to take one of them out. That's the message. That's the message.
The Red Sox fell to the Brewers , 8-6, at Fenway Park to drop to 2-8 on the season. They're the only team in MLB to not win three games.
