I teach beginner, intermediate and advanced folk, old-time and bluegrass banjo, mandolin, ukulele and guitar lessons in the East Bay area. I have a private teaching studio near the Ashby BART station with off street parking that provides a relaxed atmosphere where students can feel comfortable learning and exploring their instrument. My teaching style is nonjudgmental and encouraging. No matter what level you are at, I will work with you at your own pace to help you express yourself through music.
I offer Piano, Guitar, Saxophone, Flute, Clarinet, and Ukulele lessons - and more!! During Covid-19, all lessons are online via FaceTime or Zoom. No wasted time traveling to and from lessons! You don't even need to be in Berkeley! I design a custom approach for each student - whether their interest is classical, jazz, pop, etc. I work with students of all ages - adults and children, starting at 4 years old. Beginners are always welcome!! Openings are limited - so please call - email - or visit our website - for more detailed information.
My classes are unique in that they let little kids play real instruments: drum set, keyboard, electric and acoustic guitar, cello, violin, trumpet, trombone, tabla, xylophone, accordion, electric and upright bass, drum machines, samplers, microphone, and much more! I know of no other classes for 1 - 4 year olds that let kids play any of theses instruments ever, and we play them every class. My classes give kids the opportunity to try out all sorts of real child sized instruments, so that they and their parents have a chance to experience which instruments they might have a natural affinity for, and for which they might be more inspired to take on further study as they mature. My curriculum is quite sophisticated. I use my natural understanding of kids and their thought processes to impart knowledge of musical concepts in extremely fun and memorable ways. Through compelling and creative "games", kids learn basic drum beats and keyboard melodies, keyboard layout, vocal exercises, ear training exercises, musical notes and symbols, and much more.

Starting from where you are, we will dive into an exploration of music together! Each individual will be taught in a way that is specific to their goals. Do you want to get better at guitar? Learn how to jam and play with friends? Or do you want to get into songwriting and learn about theory? Maybe become a better singer? It's my joy to share my knowledge and experience with people of all ages who feel themselves called to music. I am especially enthusiastic about working with kids or teens, and helping them take their first steps on what may very well become a lifelong journey!
