Bill Belichick's Uncertain Future at North Carolina
Bill Belichick could eye an NFL return if things go south at North Carolina for a second straight season. Belichick's tenure has been filled with controversy.

I think for Bill, the, the dream, sadly, is probably still to coach in the NFL again.
Of course, yes.
And I think what that means is he'll hold onto this job for however long he can, right?
And I don't know if North Carolina want to fire him.
So this is something that I was, if we're grading it right now, very wrong about.
But it was one season.
One of the things I liked about the Bill Belichick hire was that it gave them Stephen Belichick as the defensive coordinator.
Now, his son, now he's probably not gonna be there.
Last, you know, reports were that he was on medical leave.
Right.
You know, I don't know that, I don't know that situation.
But just, Stephen Belichick, the season prior to their North Carolina debut- Mm-hmm was the defensive coordinator for the Washington Huskies, and produced a national top 30 defense.
Mm-hmm.
So to me, I just thought based on, on, you know I thought, "That's a good hire for North Carolina."
Like s- a young DC with Stephen Belichick's pedigree has now produced at the college level.
Like, so you get Bill to kind of raise your status, and then eventually you'll just hand it over to Stephen Belichick.
That works great.
They're less likely to do that, obviously, if this is all a disaster.
I think what you would agree with is UNC are almost as incentivized as Bill for this to work, right?
So they are-- I don't think they'll fire him in the middle of the year.
I, I, I don't think they want to do North Carolina, like, if you bring the basketball program into it, Craig, and hiring, Michael Malone, former Denver Nuggets head coach, like, th- they are chasing status a little bit.
We'll see what the r- results are going to be.
I'm bullish a bit right now on what Michael Malone will, will be for North Carolina here.
I just Last year was a mess.
There's no other way to describe it.
The expectations are much lower this year.
Like, if they do go six and six, can I call that a success, Craig?
I think that'd be fine, yes.
I, I do think that'd be fine.
I, I, I guess what it is with me is that if I, if I try to think back and I think historically Now, the game has changed in college football to degrees that we're never going back again.
As they say, you can't put the genie back in the bottle.
You can't do it.
But if you think historically, Kevin, y- some stuff is gonna come with Bill Belichick, but in no way could you have expected the girlfriend, the Lombardi issue- Mm-hmm the son.
Like, you could not have expected all of this stuff to happen in a 365-day calendar year.
And, and so Kevin, that just sort of tells me it's just too wacky, man.
Like s- stuff is happening that we are not privy to.
You have the athletic directors and the boosters and everyone sitting in a room, in some conference room in Chapel Hill, Kevin, and I wonder if they are wondering, "Oh my gosh, what did we get ourselves into here with this?
Did we make a mistake?"
Right.
To your point, I, I will say that I believe you're probably right, that it's I- I don't see them firing him.
But then ask yourself this question, Kevin.
If they're two and six, if they're- Right you know, three and five, and they know, Kevin, and they know at the end of the season the, the, the carousel and the circus is not coming back- Mm-hmm what would they do?
What would they do?
W- would, would they say, "Ah, just go ahead and finish the season," or would they do what every other college football and basketball program does, which is say, "Let's get ahead of this, eat the money, give the message out there to our recruits the circus is done, we're bringing somebody else in"?
I mean, it's crazy to associate circus with Bill Belichick.
It was the opposite at New England.
Yeah.
I just I- it's one of those things where trending to me the wrong way.
