As Kyle Shanahan continues to recover from his mid-July accident, offensive line coach and assistant head coach Chris Foerster has officially taken the reins as interim head coach in Santa Clara.
Let's take a closer look at the San Francisco 49ers coaching staff to reveal why Foerster was the best second in command.
The fortyniners by no means are in crisis mode.
Lynch explained that Foerster has been in the league for thirty-four years.
He's been around Kyle.
He's our assistant head coach.
Having been on Shanahan's staff since twenty nineteen, Foerster knows the system inside and out.
He understands the daily rhythm and the facility better than almost anyone else in the building.
Appointing Foerster allows the rest of the coordinators to stay laser-focused on their primary assignments.
Raheem Morris is the defensive coordinator, and while he does have proven head coaching experience with Atlanta and Tampa Bay, this is his first season in Santa Clara.
With the defense integrating new pieces and adjusting to a new coordinator, forcing Morris to absorb head coaching duties would definitely be a distraction.
Matt Eberflus is also the assistant head coach on the defensive side of the ball, and he brings coaching experience as well from Chicago, but he was just hired this spring.
Placing a newly arrived assistant over the defense in charge of the entire squad is not an ideal situation.
Clay Kubiak, who is the offensive coordinator, enters his second season as offensive coordinator.
Kubiak already has an increased workload with Kyle Shanahan sidelined.
Asking a young play caller to manage head coaching duties on top of running the offense would stretch him far too thin.
And of course, there's Brant Boyer, the special teams coordinator.
And while Boyer does bring extensive coaching credentials, he's also only entering his second year with the organization, giving him less familiarity with Shanahan's long-term framework than Fro- For- Foerster.
By placing Foerster at the podium, the fortyniners keep their core coordinators focused on their specific units while maintaining a familiar experienced figure at the front of the room.
