- Mathematics: Fifth-grade students will solidify their understanding of all four operations with whole numbers, fractions, and decimals, applying these concepts to solve complex real-world problems. Students will also explore concepts in geometry, including triangles, and begin working with algebraic thinking.
- Language Arts:This year, fifth-grade students will read a wide variety of complex texts and genres, learning to analyze how plot, character, and setting influence one another while synthesizing information from multiple sources. They will develop sophisticated writing skills by composing focused, well-developed narratives, informative essays, and persuasive arguments using an established writing process.
- Science: Science is also emphasized in fifth grade. Students will take the Virginia Standards of Learning (SOL) science test on top of the material learned in fourth grade. New topics will include the fifth grade content in the areas of Force and Motion, Landforms, Magnetism and Electricity, and Light and Sound.
- Social Studies: Your student will construct an understanding of global awareness by identifying and evaluating common attributes all cultures share by studying the Fertile Crescent, China, India, or Mesoamerica. Students will learn Ancient Greece or Rome and Africa or Southwest Asia.
