Second Grade Team

The second-grade year builds foundational knowledge into strong skills for independent thinking across core subjects:

  • Language Arts: Students move past simple reading to focus on comprehension and fluency. They learn advanced decoding skills, greatly expand their vocabulary, and practice analyzing different kinds of texts. For writing, they learn a structured process to create organized paragraphs, narratives, and informative pieces, while practicing correct grammar.
  • Mathematics: The main goal is to fully understand place value up to three-digit numbers to help compare and order. Students master addition and subtraction facts and use strategies to solve multi-step word problems. Key life skills learned include counting money, telling time to the nearest five minutes, and accurately measuring length, weight, and volume.
  • Science: Students act as young investigators, learning to make predictions, collect data, and distinguish between observation and inference. Major topics include the study of matter (solids, liquids, gases), living systems (life cycles and habitats), and weather patterns.
  • Social Studies: This subject introduces students to their roles as citizens, focusing on rights and responsibilities and the basics of economics (resources, trade, and money). They also use maps and globes for Geography and learn American History by studying famous figures and the distinct cultures of early American Indian groups like the Powhatan, Lakota, and Pueblo peoples.
