First Grade Team

First grade is a big year for your child, filled with exciting discoveries and important foundational learning across all subjects:

  • Language Arts: Your child will become a more confident reader, writer, and communicator. We'll focus on phonics to help them sound out words and read smoothly. They'll learn to understand what they read by asking questions and thinking deeply about stories and information. In writing, they'll practice different styles, from telling stories to writing reports, while also learning about grammar and punctuation.
  • Math: Your child will build a strong understanding of numbers. They'll learn to count to 120, grasp tens and ones, and become confident with adding and subtracting within 20. We'll also explore shapes, introduce basic fractions (halves and quarters), and teach them how to collect data and tell time using clocks and calendars.
  • Science: Your child will get hands-on experience, learning to ask questions, conduct simple experiments, observe the world around them, and even get an introduction to how engineers solve problems.
  • Social Studies: We'll explore what it means to be a good citizen, learn about American symbols and patriotism, and dive into Virginia's rich history and geography. This includes landmarks, historical figures, and economic basics like goods and services.
