Woodburn Families,

As we approach the end of the year, we want to extend our deepest thanks to our families, community volunteers, and partners. We are so fortunate to have your support. Because of you, our students have strong adult mentors, enriching after-school opportunities, access to snacks, and so much more.

We want to give a special thanks to Katie Sessa, our PTA President. She has been our fearless leader for the last two years. Under her leadership, our PTA programming has grown and further established many school traditions and experiences that have become Woodburn pillars to our students, staff, and families. We are a stronger and more connected community because of Ms. Sessa and our entire PTA executive board.

We hope you enjoy the long weekend!

2024-2025 Class Placement and Family Input - Due Today!

2024-2025 Class Placement - Family Input Form

We are starting to work on our plans for the 2024-2025 school year!  Class placements are an essential component of learning and building community. If you have information that you would like us to consider as we determine placements, please share your input by answering a few questions in the attached form. We know that a good teacher-student match and a productive mix of children are ingredients for success, and we carefully consider each child’s strengths and needs during this process. Please do not request specific teachers, as this does not take into account the many variables we must take into consideration. It is far more valuable to share particular academic or behavioral information.

Completion of this form is optional. If you would like to provide input, you may use this online form or a hard copy may be sent to the office by May 17th. This is a hard deadline.

Final PTA Meeting on May 22nd

Our final PTA membership meeting is scheduled for next Wednesday, May 22, from 6-8pm. At this meeting we will celebrate our community volunteers and elect members for next year's PTA board. Hope to see you there!

Solar Eclipse Viewing at Woodburn

A solar eclipse is happening on April 8, 2024. It's a rare and exciting astronomical phenomenon and one that requires important safety reminders.

Looking directly at the sun, even during an eclipse, can permanently damage your eyes. At Woodburn, with the support of one of our families, we have been able to collect approved eyewear so that all students, K-6, can safely view the eclipse ONLY while wearing the eyewear.

Here are some important reminders:

  • Don't look at the sun without approved eyewear. This applies to students and staff, and we encourage you to reinforce it at home.
  • Regular sunglasses are not good enough. We will be providing eyewear that has been approved for viewing .
  • Eclipse timing:The eclipse starts around 2:04 p.m., peaks at 3:20 p.m., and ends around 4:32 p.m. If you have concerns about your child walking or riding the bus home, please arrange for alternative transportation.

For more details, visit the FCPS Solar Eclipse webpage .

Woodburn Families,

We are living our best lives as one Woodburn community! Our PTA Silent Auction and Bingo Night was a great success. The PTA raised close to $5,000! This money will be added to the PTA playground enhancement fund.

Our spring break spirit week kept us going as did 2nd grade's field trip to the National History Museum and 6th grade's trip to Gettysburg. We look forward to jumping back into learning as we start the 4th quarter.

We hope your spring break is all that you and your family want and need it to be. See you on April 3rd!

CPR Training Opportunity Narcan Training Opportunity Stress, Trauma & Coping

From the Office of Student Safety & Wellness

The experience of traumatic events shapes us, no matter if they happened during childhood or as an adult. Trauma is an event or series of circumstances that have lasting effects on mental, emotional, physical, social and spiritual well-being. Stress occurs from our minds and bodies identifying an event as physically or emotionally life-threatening. The situation triggers our survival instincts and our natural fight-flight-freeze response. But our minds and bodies cannot sustain being in survival mode for extended periods of time. Sometimes, those who experience high amounts of stress and traumatic situations are unable to process or move past what has happened, and are stuck in a loop.

Childhood trauma manifests in many ways and when carried into adulthood, it can create a cycle of adverse experiences that affect future generations. The effects of traumatic events place a heavy burden on the individual, connected families, and communities. Responses to stress and traumatic experiences are personal. There is an intersection between trauma, coping, and substance misuse. Studies show that about 61% of adults have had at least one adverse childhood experience (ACE) according to the CDC. Trauma prevention and intervention strategies are important. Creating a strategy of helpful coping skills to pull from prepares us to face difficult moments and our levels of resilience and feelings of wellbeing increases also. Here are a few tips to add to your coping strategies:

  1. Seek mental health and/or substance use treatment
  2. Identify one or more people you feel safe with who can help to hold you accountable
  3. Develop, repair, or maintain healthy relationships for internal and external support
  4. Learn and practice self-regulation skills
  5. Encourage yourself and others
  6. Find ways to increase your self-esteem
  7. Focus on your strengths
  8. Model healthy behavior when dealing with difficult situations
  9. Identify your triggers and practice ways to work through them

We had an incredible time last Friday at our annual family and staff basketball game. Thank you to the PTA for partnering with us to plan this event. We loved playing ball and seeing our Wildcats in the stands cheering us on.
