First grade is a big year full of growth, discovery, and excitement. Students become stronger readers, writers, and problem-solvers while building confidence and independence. They explore new ideas, ask questions, and learn how to work and play with others. With lots of hands-on learning, engaging lessons, and time to be creative, first grade lays the foundation for a lifelong love of learning.
📚 Language Arts
First graders use Benchmark Advance , exploring nine integrated units that blend fiction, nonfiction, and cross-curricular topics. Some topics include: Plants and Animals Grow and Change , Many Kinds of Characters, Technology at Work , Past, Present & Future and Observing the Sky . Students build phonics, fluency, comprehension, discussion, and writing skills across these themes.
➗ Mathematics
In math, first graders build number sense and practice addition and subtraction. They learn about place value, fractions, money, time, and the calendar. Students also explore shapes, solids, symmetry, and measure things like temperature, weight, and length.
🔬 Science
In first grade science, students investigate plants, animals, weather, seasons, forces, motion, sound, and how the sun affects the Earth. Students develop skills like asking questions, conducting simple investigations, observing, classifying, and communicating findings. They learn about the needs of living things, properties of matter, and the importance of conserving natural resources.
🏛 Social Studies
First grade social studies introduces students to history, geography, civics, and economics through themed units. Students learn about citizenship, community roles, important historical figures, and basic economic ideas to understand the world around them.
❤️ Health & Family Life Education (FLE)
First grade health focuses on personal safety, hygiene, nutrition, and emotional well-being. Students learn safety rules, healthy habits, body awareness, and how to manage emotions and make responsible choices.
