Sixth grade is an exciting year where students grow as independent learners and critical thinkers. They dive deeper into reading and writing across different subjects, strengthen their math and science skills, and explore history and social studies with a focus on ancient civilizations and global connections. Sixth graders build important habits for middle school, including collaboration, problem-solving, and taking responsibility for their learning.

📚 Language Arts

Sixth grade language arts uses the Benchmark Advance curriculum with nine themed units covering topics like nature, democracy, technology, ancient cultures, and economics . Students develop reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills through diverse texts and collaborative activities, with some units linked to social studies.

➗ Mathematics

Sixth grade Math focuses on ratios, expressions, geometry, statistics, and rational numbers with real-world problem solving. Advanced Math covers deeper topics like equations, inequalities, proportional relationships, and data analysis, preparing students for higher-level math. Both build critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

🔬 Science

Sixth grade science focuses on inquiry and experimentation, using technology and scientific language to explore real-world concepts. Students study topics like ecosystems, energy, Earth's systems, and weather. They connect science to everyday life, learn about STEM careers, and build a strong foundation through quarterly units.

🏛 Social Studies

In sixth grade social studies, students study citizenship, history, and global issues. They examine topics like American Indians, West African empires, European exploration, the American Revolution, westward expansion, and the Civil War by analyzing original documents and developing critical thinking skills.

❤️ Health & Family Life Education (FLE)

Sixth grade health teaches personal well-being, safety, and decision-making through quarterly units. Topics include nutrition, diseases, substance abuse, internet safety, emotional health, and human growth and development. The curriculum helps students make healthy choices and understand their physical and emotional changes.
