5th grade

In fifth grade, students build independence and take on more complex academic challenges. They dive deeper into reading and writing across genres, strengthen their math skills with fractions, decimals, and problem-solving, and explore science through hands-on investigations in matter, cells, and ecosystems. Fifth graders also focus on collaboration, critical thinking, and personal responsibility to prepare for sixth grade, middle school and beyond.

📚 Language Arts

Fifth grade language arts builds skills in reading, writing, speaking, and listening through nine themed units. Some topics include: Cultivating Natural Resources, The U.S. Constitution Then and Now, Technology's Impact on Society, and Water. Students explore fiction and nonfiction texts, practice grammar and vocabulary, and write in narrative, informative, and opinion styles—using evidence and critical thinking to deepen understanding.

➗ Mathematics

In fifth grade math, students develop skills in number sense, fractions, decimals, geometry, measurement, and data analysis. Advanced math students go further, exploring concepts like exponents, ratios, integers, linear equations, and coordinate geometry to prepare for middle school-level math.

🔬 Science

In fifth grade science, students explore energy, force and motion, landforms, magnetism, electricity, light, and sound through hands-on investigations. They build on fourth grade content and review key concepts in preparation for the Virginia Science Standards of Learning (SOL) assessment at the end of the year.

🏛 Social Studies

In fifth grade social studies, students build global awareness and citizenship skills while exploring ancient civilizations like Mesopotamia, India, China, and Greece. They use inquiry, research, and technology to investigate cultures, geography, and historical contributions.

❤️ Health & Family Life Education (FLE)
