Third Grade
Meet our Third Grade team, view our supply list, and learn more about the Third Grade curriculum!
Third grade is a year of growing independence and deeper learning. Students strengthen their reading, writing, and math skills while exploring science and social studies topics in more detail. They develop critical thinking, problem-solving, and collaboration skills that prepare them for the challenges ahead. It’s an exciting time for building confidence and a love of learning!
📚 Language Arts
Third Grade uses Benchmark Advance to develop reading, writing, and communication skills through themed units. Some units include: Animal Adaptations, Advancements in Technology, Making Decisions, and Weather & Climate. Students build vocabulary, comprehension, and critical thinking with support from digital resources.
➗ Mathematics
Third grade math builds strong number sense with addition, subtraction (including regrouping), and working with numbers up to 9,999. Students learn about time, money, measurement, shapes, data, and patterns while developing problem-solving skills.
Advanced math students study above-grade-level topics like multi-digit multiplication and division, advanced fractions, and deeper problem-solving to prepare for higher-level math.
🔬 Science
In third grade science, students engage in hands-on learning by asking questions, investigating, and sharing their discoveries. They explore everyday science topics like the water cycle, simple machines and soils, while using technology to support their understanding. A highlight of the year is observing and studying ladybugs to learn about insects and their habitats.
🏛 Social Studies
Third grade social studies focuses on ancient civilizations like Egypt, China, Greece, Rome, and Mali. Students learn how geography influenced these societies and explore their cultures, leadership, and economies through inquiry and critical thinking.
❤️ Health & Family Life Education (FLE)
In third grade health, students learn how their daily habits—like sleep, nutrition, exercise, and screen time—impact their overall wellness. They explore body systems, build safety and friendship skills, and practice making smart, healthy choices.
