Checking Out Library Materials

A valid library card from the Moline Public Library or a PrairieCat member library is required to borrow materials and use the public computers.  Borrowers must present their physical library card when checking out materials. In the absence of a library card, Moline cardholders can present a valid photo ID or present their barcode via the library’s app . Minors may present a student ID or log in to their Skyward account for identification purposes.

As a member of the PrairieCat library consortium, Moline Public Library cardholders are also able to use their card at participating PrairieCat member libraries

Materials may be renewed up to three times, unless the following exceptions occur:

  • The material is on reserve/hold for another patron or library.
  • The material has already reached its maximum number of renewals.
  • The material is not allowed to be renewed.

Cardholders can renew their items by:

  • Logging in to their account in PrairieCat (library card number and PIN are required)
  • Renewing in the PrairieCat App
  • Calling 1-888-542-7259 (available 24/7, library card number and item barcodes required)
  • Calling 1-309-524-2450 (available during library hours, library card number required)
  • Visiting Circulation Services

Returning Library Materials

The Moline Public Library accepts returned materials from all PrairieCat libraries and any out-of-system Illinois library. Materials may be returned in the lobby book return (during open hours), the drive up book return (East side of the building), or at other PrairieCat member libraries.

An item is not considered returned until all of its parts are returned (CDs, liner notes, booklets, instructions, etc.). The item will remain checked out to the patron and fines will accumulate on partially returned items (if overdue) until the return of missing part(s).

Borrowers are responsible for the replacement costs for lost or damaged items. Replacement costs include the price of the item (at the time of library acquisition) and a nonrefundable $5 processing fee. If damaged material is returned in the book drop, a letter will be sent informing the patron of the amount owed for the damage.

At the discretion of the purchasing staff member, the library accepts replacement copies for lost or damaged items. Borrower must still pay processing fees. The replacement copy must be an exact match of the original (i.e., author, titles, year, ISBN, format, etc.) and in new or like new condition. The library reserves the right to refuse any replacement copy.

The library does not issue refunds for lost and paid items that are later found or replacement copies.

Fines

As of July 5, 2023, late fines are not assessed on most materials checked out at Moline Public Library, with the following exceptions:

  • Interlibrary loans (requests outside of PrairieCat) - $1 per day
  • Zoo and museum passes, hot spots - $5 per day

Loss of Privileges

Patron accounts are blocked once items on their card are overdue by 21 days or reported to collections. Privileges are reinstated once billed items have been returned in good condition and any collection fees have been paid.

The Library will send a courtesy overdue notices when materials are 7 days late and 14 days late. At 21 days overdue, a bill notice is issued.

Collections

The Moline Library is obligated to attempt the recovery of all outstanding debt and/or library materials. To that end, borrowers with a balance of $25 or more are subject to contact from a collection agency. A non-negotiable $10 collection fee will be applied to the account of any borrower who is referred to collections.
