Hoops, originally made from stiff grasses, have always been popular toys. In ancient Greece, they were used for weight loss; in 14th century England, medics blamed heart attacks on recreational "hooping." The word "hula" was added in the early 18th century, when sailors visiting Hawaii noticed similarities between hula dancing and hooping. In 1957, a plastic hula hoop marketed by the Wham-O company sparked a fad. As the fad died out, Wham-O again struck gold with the release of their Frisbee.
