war seemed imminent ; the atmos-
phere in Europe was full of
suspicion and mistrust ; we didn't
know a soul in the Scandinavian
countries, nor any of the languages ;
the permission to stay was carefully
restricted by every country to the
time necessary to give our concerts.

　政局は暗雲立ちこめる状況下にあった．戦
争の勃発は一発触発の状態だった．ヨーロッ
パに流れる大気は怪しげで不信なものだった．
私たちは北欧諸国の人たちの心意気をしりま
せんでした．もちろん言葉もわかりませんで
した．滞在許可期間は各国で注意深く制限を
課され、コンサートに必要な期間だけにされ
ました．
