A Day in Shimbashi: Tonkatsu Curry & Soba Dinner
Today I found a hidden place in Shimbashi — Tonkatsu Aoki, located on the first floor of the Shimbashi New Building. Official website hereI ordered the Roast Tonkatsu Curry (¥1,300). The place has that nostalgic, old-style Japanese restaurant vibe, where you buy a meal ticket from a vending machine and hand it to the staff. Luckily, I only had to wait about five minutes before getting a seat.The curry came with finely shredded cabbage and a thick, juicy tonkatsu on top. The curry itself was mild — I personally wished for a bit more spice! The pork cutlet was thick and tender; it might actually go best with just salt, though of course the traditional sauce and mustard work well too.In the evening, I stopped by Sagatani, a soba shop near Shimbashi Station.I had the Zaru Soba and Oyako-don set for ¥880.The soba is made from 100% buckwheat, slightly firm, just how I like it. Lunch in Tsukiji: Sushi Zanmai – A Perfect Surprise
Today I went to a clinic in Tsukiji, and afterward I stopped by Sushi Zanmai for lunch. I didn’t expect anything special because I used to think Sushi Zanmai was “just okay.”But today’s experience changed my opinion completely.Link⇒ SushizanmaiI ordered the 1,500 yen lunch set (a little more with tax), and it was honestly amazing. The sushi was fresh and perfectly prepared, and every single piece tasted better than I remembered.The set came with a bowl of miso soup made with aosa seaweed.It was rich and comforting, and I could tell they used good-quality miso. There was also chawan-mushi (steamed egg) included, and they served hot green tea without asking. Everything felt generous and thoughtful.There is also a 980 yen lunch set, which is the cheapest option, and I’m sure it would still be satisfying—especially for someone who doesn’t want a big meal. But choosing the 1,500 yen set was absolutely the right decision. I left full and very happy.The Tsukiji Sushi Zanmai I visited has recently been renovated, so the space was clean, bright, and welcoming. Affordable, delicious, and comfortable—such a good balance.After lunch, I walked toward Shiodome and continued through Shimbashi, Ginza, and even Tokyo Station. It’s a beautiful walking route, with lots of windows to browse and areas to wander. Lunch in Shimbashi: “Musashiya” and a Sweet Gift from “Ogawaken”
Today I had lunch at a popular restaurant in Shimbashi called Musashiya.Link ＞＞MusashiyaIt’s located on the 1st floor of the New Shimbashi Building, right in front of Shimbashi Station. The place is always busy, and there’s usually a line because they are famous for their omelette rice (omuraisu) and hamburger steak.I ordered the half omuraisu & half hamburger steak plate.The price was around 1,500 yen. The omuraisu was soft and creamy, and the hamburger steak was juicy and flavorful. It’s a perfect choice if you want to try both of their specialties.After lunch, I walked toward the Shiodome side and stopped by Ogawaken to buy one of my favorite souvenirs: Raisin Witch cookies.A box of 10 pieces costs around 1,400 yen. They need to be refrigerated and the shelf life is about 6 days. These cookies make a great gift—they’re elegant but not too fancy, and everyone seems to love them.They also have a café there. The atmosphere is strict and quiet, so it’s not a place for long conversations, but the cakes and coffee are truly excellent. Today I want to share another special place in Kagawa: a Japanese restaurant called KADOYA (門家), located in Nio, a coastal town famous for ocean views and relaxed local culture.Link: KadoyaNio is a beautiful area, especially if you enjoy the sea and quiet countryside vibes. Keep going.The restaurant really is there — and it’s worth the moment of doubt.To be honest, I didn’t have high expectations at first. Many restaurants in small towns are simple and casual, so I assumed this would be similar. But the food surprised me in the best way. Every dish was carefully prepared, beautifully balanced, and felt like real craftsmanship. It made me think the chef must have trained at a well-known restaurant somewhere. The flavors had depth — the kind of taste that comes from experience, not chance.Lunch is around 2,500 yen, which feels very reasonable considering the quality. Today I want to share one of my favorite places in Kagawa: Yamagoe Udon, a famous and beloved udon shop located near Takamatsu Airport.Website: Yamagoe UdonWhenever I return to Kagawa, this is one of my first stops. It has almost become a ritual: arrive at Takamatsu Airport → drive straight to Yamagoe → start my trip with real Sanuki udon. No exceptions.Even though Yamagoe is very well-known, the atmosphere is warm, simple, and authentic. What I especially love is that they never rely on their fame. They keep improving and refining the taste, instead of becoming lazy or proud of being a “famous shop.” Recently, the tempura is fried fresh in the shop, and you can feel the upgrade immediately — crispier, lighter, and just right.One small personal story: the owner, a friendly woman, always remembers my father. Every time we visit, she greets him personally. She never calls out to everyone — only to regulars she truly recognizes. That tiny gesture makes the experience feel even more special. It’s not just food — it feels like coming home.The udon itself is smooth, chewy, and filling. Prices are very reasonable, starting around 300 yen per bowl. Many people recommend their popular kamatama udon (fresh udon with raw egg), but my personal favorite is simple — kake udon. Just noodles and broth… and that’s enough. I recently had lunch at Kamonka, a Chinese restaurant just a two-minute walk from Shimbashi Station. My friend and I chose the 3500-yen course lunch, which turned out to be surprisingly good value because the private room was free to use during lunchtime. A Day at Mitsumine Shrine — One of Kanto’s Most Powerful Spiritual Sites
Visiting Mitsumine Shrine, one of the most famous power spots in the Kanto region, was a special experience for me. The shrine is located deep in the mountains of Saitama Prefecture and is protected not by fox spirits but by wolf guardians called okami. This gives the whole place a wild and ancient feeling. I visited to receive a wolf talisman and took part in a formal prayer ceremony. Inside the main hall it was very quiet, and I could almost only hear the wind from the mountains. When I held the blessed talisman in my hands, I felt as if I was being gently protected by nature and by something very old. If you visit Mitsumine Shrine, it is better to avoid Saturdays and Sundays because they are extremely crowded and the parking lots and buses fill up quickly. The road to the shrine is long and winding, so people who get carsick should be careful, and the air on the mountain is much colder than in the city, so warm clothing is important. Even with these challenges, I think the shrine is worth the effort.
