Founded in 1230, this is the only monastery of the Trinitarian order known in Ireland. It is now Holy Trinity Abbey, Adare’s Roman Catholic church.
The Trinitarian order – or the Order of the Redemption of Captives – was founded in France at the end of the 12th century. Their purpose was to rescue hostages taken during the Crusades in the Holy Land. The monasteries in Northern Europe were set up to recruit monks and collect ransom money, though some were hospitals for rescued captives. The Trinitarians may have come to Adare from Scotland.
After the Crusades, the monks gradually assumed a way of life little different from other orders.」

Adare Castle was built and owned by the O'Donovan family until the arrival of the Normans in the 12th century. In 1226, the lands and castle were granted to the FitzGerald family, Earls of Kildare.
The castle was rebuilt and enlarged during the 13th and 14th centuries and was used by the Earls of Kildare until 1536 when it was confiscated by the Crown after the rebellion of Silken Thomas against Henry VIII. It then passed into the ownership of the Earls of Desmond who held it for over 100 years.
The castle fell into ruin after the Desmond Rebellion of 1580 and remained unoccupied until restoration work in the 20th century. Guided tours of the castle commence at the Adare Heritage Centre.」
The Franciscans arrived in Dublin around 1230. During the next century the Catholic Church was reformed by Henry VIII and the monasteries dissolved. The Adare Franciscan Friary was built in 1464 by Thomas Earl of Kildare and was used by the Franciscan Friars for over 100 years. In 1540, it was suppressed by Henry VIII and passed into the hands of lay owners.
It remained in use by the Franciscans in the 17th and 18th centuries and was restored by the Earl of Dunraven in the 19th century. Today the friary is used as a school (St. Nicholas National School) and as a venue for cultural and community events.」
