夕日・The setting sun
先週の水曜日の夕方、湖山池に沈む夕日を一杯に浴びているグリーンフィールドで遊んでいる地元住民です。借りる話を県庁に持ちかけた時は『日本人は芝生で遊ぶ文化がないから、造ったって誰も来ないと思うがね』と言われた。「遊べる芝生がないから遊ばないだけだろう」と返した僕。軍配はどうやら僕に上がっているようですね。Evening time at Greenfield last Wednesday, with the setting sun and some local residents enjoying a peaceful time.When I first approached the local authorities, I was told that "Japanese have no culture of playing on grass, so even if you make a grass park, no-one wll come".My response was along the lines of "there are no grass parks for them to play on, that is all".This photo would suggest that I was right.

トイレが使い易くなりました・More improvements at Greenfield
本日はグリーンフィールドのトイレ周辺に目隠しとなる垣根が植樹され、利用者にとってグリーンフィールドがさらに快適になります。これは湖山西自治会と鳥取市の協力で地元住民に愛されているグリーンフィールドならではの改善であり、関係の皆様に感謝あるのみです。In a joint urban improvement project between the local residents' association and Tottori City, today we planted some bushes in front of the toilet at Greenfield, a step that will make the park even more enjoyable for the many users.I offer my sincerest thanks to all concerned parties.

柔軟に対応する行政・Local body's response
家の近くの池に面している公園の護岸からコンクリートを撤去し、自然の形へ返す工事が着々と進められていますが、2年前の初期工事では水辺までの傾斜をかなりの急勾配にして、利用者が使いづらいうえ、芝刈り機が走れないのですぐさま草ぼうぼうになった。There is a lakeside park only 100m from my home and the local prefectural government has been working to restore the lake banks from the concrete installed several decades ago to it natural state. In the first stage, 2 years ago, the incline to the water edge was too steep for park visitors and the motor mower to negotiate, with the result that no-one goes near the water and the grass is totally overgrownb. 去年行われた第2期工事では我々の指摘を受けてちゃんと芝刈り機が走れるもっと緩やかの勾配にしているので、近所住民の間では評判がいいです。In the 2nd stage, done last year, the government took on board our comment to soften the incline, resulting in very happy users and a neatly-maintained slope.今からの第3期工事ではコの字型の船着き場です。この角に当たる部分は直線にしないで機械も人間も走りやすい緩やかな円を描くようにすればとの提案を行政担当者に提示したら、すぐ業者さんに指示を出した。Work began in the 3rd stage a couple of days ago, this time on a boat landing. When I suggested that they may want to make the corners rounded, thus making it easier to mow and more fun to run on, the person in charge immediately instructed the contractor to do so.また、道路から作業現場まで毎日トラックが走るので、その部分の芝生を守る目的に鉄板が敷いてあったのですが、鉄板を１ヶ月間も置くとその下の芝生が全滅するのに対して、仮にトラックが毎日数回走ったぐらいで元気な芝生がへこたらないと指摘をしたら、担当者の『俺の知識不足だった』と、早速鉄板撤去の指示を出したのではありませんか。Out of a desire to protect the grass in the section from the road to the actual site, over which trucks will run several times a day, the contractor had laid heavy steel plate. When I told them that the damage to healthy grass from the trucks would be far less than that from the steel plates (the grass will die after one week), the government official instructed the contractor to remove the plates (some already gone in the photo).今まで想像したことのないほどの行政の柔軟な対応に感激している今日この頃です。こういう役人は大歓迎です。I am amazed by the flexibility and response to a resident's request shown by this official. Would that there were more like him.

これで納得か？・Convinced?
今年の６月に苗を植え付けた小学校で10月に運動会を開催しました。あちこちの学校の校庭芝生化を学校に提案するとき学校側からは『芝生が良いけど、運動会をやる時は困るからで来ません』と良く言われます。当然この学校ではそう言われませんでした。そうおっしゃる教育関係者に是非見てほしい映像です。「この子供達の裸足で精一杯走る時の笑顔が目に入らぬか」と叫びたいです。これを見て、それでも運動会を理由に芝生化に反対する教育者の皆様、子供に関わる仕事に就く資格がないです。直ちに転職して下さい。This June, we planted seedlings in the grounds of a primary school in Shimane Prefecture. In October the school held its sports day. We are often told by school officials when we recommend converting the school grounds to grass that "we know grass is good for the children but grass would create problems when we have our sports day".I want all such educators to look closely at this photo, while I scream at them "Can't you see the smiling faces on these children as they run barefoot?"To any educator who still refuses to convert their school's grounds to grass even then, I say: you have no right to be in a job with responsibility for children. Resign immediately!!!!!

来月の3日午前10時より午後3時までグリーンフィールドであおぞら市inグリーンフィールドが開催されます。50以上のお店、湖山のれん街、タグラグビー教室、湖山池遊覧船等々盛りだくさんのイベントやアトラクションが用意されます。大勢においで下さいませ。On 3 November, the Greenfield Flea Market 2007 will be held, starting at 10Am and going through to 3PM.There will be more than 50 stalls, a kids tag rugby tournament, cruises on the Lake, and lots of other fun and entertainment. We look forward to seeing you all there.

転ぶから芝生が嫌・No grass because kids may fall over
グリーンフィールドに子供とよく遊びに来るお父さんがその子が通う小学校での運動会に参加し、隣の保護者に芝生で遊ぶ気持ちよさを説明していたとき『子供が転ぶから芝生が嫌です』と言ったそうです。ここまで子供を保護し、何か良いことがあるのでしょうか。逆に絶えず転ばないように心がけて走る子供が段々動きのスケールが小さくなり、ますます運動神経も基礎体力が低下する結果につながることも理解できない親達。ああ、情けない！A father who regularly plays with his kids at Greenfield attended the sports day at his child's school recently and was explaining the benefits of grass to the parent standing next to him. That parent's response was that "grass is no good because the children may fall over".Does anything good come from such excessive protection of children? How is it that parents can not understand that if children are consistently conscious of falling over and play accordingly, then their physical co-ordination and basic physical strength will gradually deteriorate?How pathetic!

親型解雇処分に思う・Stable master fired
17歳の力士が稽古中に殴られ、暴行を加えられ死亡し、親方が解雇処分となる事件が相撲界を揺るがせているニュースが毎日流されています。言うまでもなく、このような暴力的指導が良くないのは誰だって分かっています。でも、相変わらずマスコミとスポーツ界の次元の低さにうんざりしている毎日です。8月の半ばに町田市で中学生と大阪市で高校生が連続して学校の部活中に熱中症で死亡したときは指導者を集団で襲いかかり、永久追放にあたる解雇処分にはならなかったです。現役の中学生や高校生の命って、さほど大切ではないということでしょうか。Every day we are bombarded with news of the 17 year old sumo wrestler who was beaten do death during training, leading to the stable master being fired and effectively banned for ever from the sumo world. Noone needs reminding that this sort of coaching based on violence is totally unacceptable.Every day though, I find myself sickened by the low level of the mass media and Japan's sports associations. When a junior high school student in Machida and a high school student in Osaka died on consecutive days from heat exhaustion during 'Bukatsu' training in mid-August, the coaches were not subjected to this group attack nor were they banned for life from coaching school teams.The only conclusion is that the life of a junior high or high school student is not considered particularly important in Japan.

これでも土を選ぶか・You still prefer dirt grounds?
去年の夏に園庭を芝生にした北広島にある保育園でこの前の日曜日に運動会を開催しました。3－4歳児の競争のゴールシーンをよく見て下さい。精一杯走り抜けているこの園児達の顔面いっぱいに笑みを浮かべている顔を覚えて下さい。で、今度今貴方のお子様が通っている保育園や幼稚園の土の園庭の上での運動会での風景を思い出して下さい。それでも土を選びますか。ちなみにこの芝生化に掛かった費用は10万円位ではないでしょうか。Last Sunday I attended the sports day at a kindergarten in North Hiroshima whose grounds we converted to grass last summer. Please have a close look at the finish of this race for 3-4 year-olds. Please remember the smiles on their faces as they cross the line, running as fast their tiny little legs will carry them.And when now remember the faces on your child's face when running on the hard dirt at his or her kindergarten.Do you really prefer dirt grounds? Just for your information, the total cost of this grass conversion was around Y100,000.

何だよ、この騒ぎ方・Why the big fuss?
最近のニュースで話題を独占している話題といえばどこかの相撲部屋での若い力士が稽古中に殴られて死んだのではないかです。相撲を知っている知り合いがこんなことが当たり前のように起きているので、特に驚かないですが、驚くのはマスコミの騒ぎ方。ここ20数年の間、学校部活の練習中に150人以上の子供達が熱中症で死んでいる統計が政府から発表されていますが、どのときでもマスコミではほとんど話題にすらならない扱いに対して朝晩休みなく相撲界を叩くマスコミは一体何を考えているのか。この国ではスポーツの名の下で子供を虐めて殺すのは守るべき伝統のように思われて様です。この伝統を変えない限り、このような事件が後を絶たないのは明白です。The news recently has been monopolised by the story of a high school sumo wrestler who it seems was beaten to death by his stable master during training. Friends who are familiar with sumo are not particularly surprised, as this sort of treatment is said to be very common, but we are all surprised by the excessive response of the mass media.Over the last 20 or so years, around 150 school students have died of heat exhausttion during 'bukatsu' training, mainly in July-August. Despite this, none of the media have ever focused on a single incident to anything near the coverage of this sumo wrestler's death.Torturing and killing children all in the name of sport seems to be a tradition considered worthy of protecting here in Japan, so until this basic concept is reviewed, there will be no end to the waste of children's lives.
