Northgate Park

Situated in the middle of the neighborhood between the Columbia and Willamette rivers, this medium-sized park has something for everyone. For those who prefer a lazy, shady and quiet park, there are plenty of areas in Northgate Park to get some serenity. For those into cheering crowds and heated games, there are fields and facilities for baseball, softball, soccer, football and tennis. The courts are lighted, and there is a playground for the kids.

East Delta Park

This park is where the city of Vanport, formerly Oregon's second largest, was destroyed in 1948 by a tsunami flood. The one retaining wall collapsed and sent a 12-foot wave washing over the city. Now, this 633-acre natural area contains optimal wetland hiking and the Heron Lakes Golf Course. Lush marshes are home to an abundance of indigenous flora and fauna. West Delta Park area is also designated for the United States Army during national emergencies.

This little-known park is great for long walks and picnics. Paths canopied by old trees wind through the green space without any steep hills. The rolling park has basketball courts, baseball fields, and plenty of space to chip golf balls or pitch a blanket. You'll also find a picnic shelter, picnic tables and playground fun for kids. Not a safe place to linger after dark, it's still a nice little getaway close to the city. There's also a market nearby.

Arbor Lodge Park

This park, located in the middle of a North Portland neighborhood, is a great place to have your cookout, picnic or nap. Some weekends, it tends to fill up with families and large gatherings, but most days, it is rather sleepy. Not a lot of people know about it. Nevertheless, the old-growth trees, green grass and quiet location make it another great Rose City park. You will find baseball and football fields, tennis courts and cookout facilities.

Chimney Park

A wide driveway leads up to an almost eerie historic structure. These 16 acres (7 hectares) were previously the site of the city's dump, and the chimney that belonged to the incinerator remains. Now, you will find Portland's archives in the old building. Chimney Park is officially undeveloped, but the winding trail is all you need to enjoy the natural surroundings. The marshy wetlands of Smith and Bybee Lakes are adjacent to this city plot. Your furry friend will enjoy a visit here as dogs are allowed off the leash in this park.
