For years, K-beauty has been ahead of the trends. Glass skin masks, PDRN treatments, and the rise of microneedling serums are all innovations hailing from Korea that are now monopolizing beauty routines the world over.
The Korean lash lift, also called a K-lift, taps into the same innovation driving the ever-growing K-beauty market. "It's perfect for those seeking subtle, polished results without daily mascara," says Jaimineey Patel, Head of VIP for BBB London. "They're natural-looking, customizable, and with none of the upkeep or irritating formulas."
Not only does this buzzy treatment speak to the current beauty zeitgeist for a natural, no-makeup aesthetic, but the results are far better for your lash health than those of the traditional technique.
What Is a Korean Lash Lift?
A Korean lash lift curls your natural lashes from the root for a soft, natural flutter. While a traditional lash lift uses a single shield and a harsher thioglycolic acid formula that can leave lashes feeling over-processed, the Korean method prioritizes lash health, using a two-step technique that works across the full length of the lash. The “grow-out” is also said to be softer and less noticeable, and your lashes are left in better condition post-treatment.
"It's a semi-permanent treatment that curls lashes from the root, making them appear longer and fuller," explains Patel. "The products used to soften and reshape the lashes use a cysteamine-based formula, which is a gentler alternative that allows us to reshape the lashes from root to tip, prioritizing lash health throughout."
How Does It Differ From a Traditional Lash Lift?
The difference comes down to both formula and technique. "In a traditional lash lift, thioglycolic acid is used to break down the hair bond; for the Korean version, a cysteamine-based formula is used instead," explains Patel. "With a traditional lift, there is only one shield used, and the formula can only work on the curve being created at that point."
Though both treatments help create a new shape and curl, the Korean lash lift's two-step root lift offers a different result and a more considered approach, ensuring the solution is distributed evenly. "During step one of a Korean lash lift, a flat shield is used to pre-lift the lashes from root to tip, creating an even, smooth platform that allows the softening solution to work effectively at the root," adds Patel. “The lashes are first relaxed using a flat shield, and then the new shape is created using a second shield that achieves the desired curl and lift.”
Unlike a wide, heavily curled finish or false-lash effect, the Korean lift creates a clean, natural, and defined arc.
What to Expect From a Korean Lash Lift
I personally enjoyed the whole experience; it was relaxing and non-irritating, and after an hour, I left Liberty's BBB salon with longer, curlier, yet still natural-looking lashes.
The best part was that there was no discomfort or irritation. "Compared to traditional techniques, Korean lash lifts are gentler and more comfortable, with less irritating formulas," agrees Patel. "The results are natural-looking and customizable, with no harsh lines or demarcation when they grow out. This approach ensures lashes stay healthy and strong, with results lasting six to eight weeks," she adds.
It's true. My lashes didn't look dramatic, but instantly defined. They appeared as if my natural lashes had doubled, with each one subtly curled, meaning I could forgo mascara for weeks.
It wasn't just the allure of streamlining my beauty routine, though; the long-lasting results were equally impressive. For the past month—especially when I've been particularly tired—I've found myself skipping makeup entirely and still looking bright-eyed and polished. Better yet, my lashes look just as curled and defined as the day I walked out of the salon.
